Schmendricks- Real bagels? Who in NY bakes on a cookie sheet?
They have to be kidding asking $36 a dozen for bagels. They are a novelty now but I predict that they will either have to lower their prices or they will be out of business.
Restaurants Near the Marin Civic Center
Non-chain thanks and food is more important than price.
Restaurants Near the Marin Civic Center
We are planning to meet for dinner before an event at the Marin Civic Center. We are from Berkeley and San Francisco and really don't know restaurants in the area. Any ideas?
One more thing...SF farmers market
I am a great fan of Alameny. This market is more representative of the people of San Francisco. It is quite large and there are some excellent food vendors. Prices are significantly lower than the Ferry Plaza. One vendor who is at both tells me he knows his customers and charges more for the same product at the Ferry Plaza.
Local half sour pickles?
Another vote for New World Market. They also make a good sauerkraut. I have tried Paulie's Pickles and find them too acidic.
Black Jewell Popcorn
I really love this popcorn. It is the polar opposite of Orville Redenbacker. The kernels are small, white, but very tasty. I once found some at an Indian grocery in South City and at TJ Maxx at the Westlake Shopping Center. But I can't find it anywhere. Mail order prices are outrageous. Does anyone know who sells this popcorn in San Francisco or near San Francisco?
Thanksgiving dessert reco?
For the past few years I have been asked to bring dessert to a Thanksgiving dinner in Berkeley. I bought wonderful pies at Nora's Patisserie on San Pablo in Colma. People loved the pies.

Argentine restaurants or markets in the Bay ?
Lucca's on Valencia has a large selection of Argentinian matés. Spiazzo on West Portal is owned by Italians for Argentina but the food is mainly Italian.
A few years ago I had a great Argentinian dinner in of all places Bangor, Maine. If Bangor can do it, why not San Francisco?

no more Niman pastrami at Saul's [Berkeley]
Trader Joe's has discontinued carrying Niman Ranch ham steaks.
Restaurant buyout in San Francisco for a wedding?
Consider the Spanish Cultural Center on Alameny. They have a nice space for a wedding and rooms for private parties with good food. Last I heard you could bring in your own liquor and wedding cake but that may have changed.

Need restaurant recommendation in SF for family dinner (includes 2 kids)
I was in a similar situation a few weeks ago - out of towners with kids. We ended up at the Clement Street Bar & Grill. The food is very good and the service excellent. The server was very good with kids and brought them crayons. The adults would have liked something more exotic but everyone liked their food.
The Best Florentines
I thought the Florentines at of all places, Ikea, were quite good.

6 hour layover--where to eat?
For good neighborhood French, take BART to Glen Park and walk one block to L P'tit Laurent.
Philly Cheese Steak?
Just don't order your cheesesteak with Swiss like John Kerry did.
Where to buy hazelnuts in the South Bay?
As much as I like Trader Joe's, I would not recommend their hazelnuts. They are tiny and there are too many rancid nuts. I don't believe these nits (a.k.a. "filberts") are grown locally. I have seen good looking large nuts at Other Avenues on Judah.
berkeley bagel tsouris (yiddish for plaint)
I may be wrong but I THINK I read that Draeger's in Menlo Park has H&H Bagels from NYC.
Clement Street
Mescolanza on Clement at about 23rd has great Italian food and a very good Caesar salad. Street parking is difficult.

Meal Delivery in San Jose
My niece in San Jose is about to have her second baby. When she lived in another state, I found a service that would deliver their own prepared meals to her house. Is there such a service in San Jose?
I also considered Waiters on Wheels but they seem to be moribund in San Jose.
Traditional Waffles in the Bay Area
It's been a while since I've been there but the waffles at It's Tops (1801 Market St) were very good.
So when DOES the local crab season start in 2010?
I had a great crab vendor who gave me this rule of thumb: "Crab season begins when the world series is over. Crab season ends when the baseball season begins." Not fully true but close enough.
Where has all the popcorn gone?
I am a great fan of Black Jewel popcorn. The corn is black and pops up in white, tasty, small kernels. I can't seem to find it locally any more. Williams Sonoma used to carry it but no longer.
HELP! - Bagel dogs, lots of 'em
This is an old topic. Costco used to carry them but no longer. Does anyone know who sells them - preferably in bulk? I am in San Francisco.
latkes to reheat at home?
Whole Foods was good and they freeze well. Be sure to reheat in an oven at 350 and you will crisp them up and get rid of oil.
Lalime's - the George Morrone era
I was there a few weeks ago on a Saturday night. The place was jammed but they were spot on with our reservation. My Caesar salad was mediocre with limp lettuce and a bland dressing. I had lamb two ways. The portion was small and the lamb stew was bland. Service was friendly but inattentive with a few errors. Wine list was good. Coffee was excellent but I had to flag a server for more. All and all - a so-so experience.
Hoagie Rolls?
The Italian French bakery in North Beach has torpedo roll that would work well. You can also get them at Lucca's on Valencia.
GO PHILLIES!
Good quality ground chuck in Oakland/Berkeley?
I was just in Safeway and they ground chuck steak for me, It make excellent burgers.
Caffe Venezia, Berkeley . . . crossed off the list
I ate there Saturday. Mediocre food and terrible service with bad coffee.
