Pulque?

Wiggy's used to have a canned version. Not too bad but I think it was pasteurized which probably changed it. I've been told there is a local-owned convenience store on South First that has the real deal but you know how these urban legends are. A fellow from Mexico told me the best way to drink it is just to drink it all down at once. When I asked him what it was like he said it was nasty!

Searching for Kobe beef to cook

Texas' Strube Ranch has Wagyu beef (America's 'Kobe") and sells through this company: https://www.bigpoppasmokers.com/store/meatlocker/beef?limit=all.

They don't sell individual steaks except for ground beef patties and franks but have entire strip loins, rib eyes, flat irons, and other cuts. PRICEY but looks great!

No more Dublin (cane sugar) Dr. Pepper!

Will this be the same price as regular Dr. Pepper? If so I'll be a happy camper! Dublin DP was certainly pricey.

I believe Dublin also made cane sugar versions of Big Red and NuGrape. I hope those will continue. National Dr. Pepper/Snapple claims they have a cane sugar version of Dr. Pepper but that may just be a dodge. King Corn wins again!

Tamales at Costco

Not to highjack your thread but has anyone tried Pedro's tamales lately? They were sold at Randalls, made in Lubbock, and used to be absolutely awesome but the last couple of times I tried them they were not very impressive.

I'd love to find a easily obtained tamale that isn't horribly greasy and fairly priced.

Need Austin rec for Xmas gift certificate

This is a little different from your original idea but how about giving them tuition to cooking classes? Both Central Market and Whole Foods have set 'couples' classes but there is a lot of other classes that a couple could enjoy together. I think everyone could profit from taking a knife skills class or one on making sauces, stocks, etc. Even if they have different partners in the classes they take it should be instructive, fun, and lead to taking chances in terms of cooking, as well as eating, new and different foods.

Pâté with Liver?

Kocurek's duck pate has duck, butter, brandy, onion, thyme, bay leaves, and quatre epices.

Bakery suppliers?

Restaurant Depot is a good place. You'll need a business (tax-exempt) license to get a card but that's pretty easy to do.

Old Restaurants in Austin

And there was a sign nearby (in the alley perhaps?) that read IF YOU EAT AT BERT'S DON'T PARK HERE.

Cigars and Scotch club

Cool River Cafe's web site (http://www.coolrivercafe.com/cognac_lounge.php?c=3&id=6) mentions their Cognac and Cigar Lounge. I checked out their dinner menu and a side of their mac & cheese is $6.95 so I probably couldn't get in the door.
I'll third the request though.

Exploring Maudie's Menu

Try their migas or 'Pete's Tantalizing' breakfast tacos.

red butcher paper

I work at Kocurek Charcuterie and we've ordered butcher paper from Uline. It ships out of Dallas and the freight was high enough we just buy local now. Here's their brown paper:
http://www.uline.com/BL_1960/Waxed-Paper
It's FDA compliant and comes in rolls and sheets..

tex mex breakfast

Although I wouldn't order anything else at Maudie's (south Lamar location) I think the migas are pretty good. With a side order of potatoes and corn tortillas.

His Majesty The Chef: Best Male Chef In Austin

The chef that is actually overseeing the cooking for David Bull is Rebecca Meeker, who just before signing on with him opened a restaurant in Taiwan for Joel Robuchon. She's a close friend of close friends. A celebrity chef may come up with concepts and menus but its the chef de cuisine and sous chefs that make a kitchen work.

Hard Hat Report Vol 7

Does anyone know what's going into the small drive-through (first a Short Stop, then a Baby Greens) at Oltorf & South Lamar? It's been renovated for a couple of months and looks like they're close to finishing. A new menu board went up but it's blank.

American beers available in Spain?

I realize Spain produces good beer (as well as wine, cider, etc.) but I was curious if the States' 'micro' beers such as Dogfish Head, New Belgium, or Sierra Nevada were sold in Madrid's or Barcelona's stores?
Thanks from Austin, Texas
And planning an extensive visit to Spain soon!

Caul fat!

Caul fat!

You can usually only get caul fat frozen in blocks or 30 or 40 pounds. Try Longhorn Meats on the east side: 512-476-5223.

chile cheese fries

Seconded. I never eat chili cheese fries but a friend insisted and it was really good. Lots of onions & jalapeno slices as well.

Best store/bar to buy/sample microbrew beers

From what I've heard you should check the expiration date on beer there since something may be a little out of date.

Cooler weather is coming

I had the chili cheese fries at 24 Diner and their chili was excellent. Big, meaty pieces of what looked like brisket, not too greasy, and just the right blend of spice for me. I normally wouldn't eat chili cheese fries but a friend insisted it was great. The burgers were pretty good, the side of mac & cheese I had was great, and I had a sip of a banana shake.

Your favorite vegetable gardening reference books

I like the books by husband-and-wife Eliot Coleman and Barbara Damrosch:
http://www.fourseasonfarm.com/books/index.html
Hamilton Books usually has a couple of their books for $10 or so.
I also have several of the ethnic vegetable gardening books from:

Pepsi or Mountain Dew Throwback (sugar)

http://www.bevreview.com/2010/07/08/coming-soon-dr-pepper-made-with-real-sugar/
"This release is for a limited time to celebrate Dr Pepper's 125th anniversary over the summer (specifically, "through September" or "while supplies last"). As such, they'll have 6 different can designs and a special bottle look...this new Dr Pepper "Made With Real Sugar" will be available in markets where Coke has the bottling rights to Dr Pepper, namely the bottlers of Coca-Cola Enterprises."

Jaime’s Spanish Village

Glad to hear that. I never tried their queso and aren't a fan of their green sauce but the red is tops. Speaking of salsa, Maudie's (I only go for the migas) seems to have changed in the past months. No longer the almost strained, smooth consistency (like Jaime's) it's also gone down in the heat factor. Anyone know of local restaurants that sell good HOT, hot sauce at a reasonable price?

Jaime’s Spanish Village

Is this place that makes the Jamie's hot sauce (sold refrigerated) I love? I guess that's going away as well if so.

What to order at Parkside & Fonda San Miguel?

The oyster sampler at Parkside was really great. And it may sound lowly but their egg sandwich is fantastic as well.

Former Asian Cafe on W. 15th St.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? Craigslist has a rental listing for a former Asian cafe on W. 15th but I couldn't find a likely location driving 15th. A friend is looking for kitchen space and this sounds ideal. I'm not sure how long ago this place was in operation but any idea where it might have been? Thanks!
