Labor Day- Willamette/ Dundee Wine Tasting Rec's
If you're hitting up Drouhin I'd recommend also going to Domaine Serene. It's quite close by and they have excellent Pinots.
You may also want to try the wine board for additional recommendations.
Where to buy clotted cream in Seattle?
I've purchased clotted cream both at the Creamery in Pike Place (as babette feasts suggested) and at area Whole Foods stores. I've had a lot of difficulty tracking it down anywhere else locally.
Spur Seattle - Follow Up
I would have to agree with you on all counts, Billy Bob. I enjoyed the food (though I found them a bit heavy-handed with the salt) and creative cocktails at Spur, but I was a bit surprised when the bill came. This was likely due to my group enjoying the cocktails a little too much and thus working up the bill fairly high on drinks, however, I also found the food items to be at a high price point for an atmosphere that felt very much like a lounge.
I don't know that I will be going back except at happy hour primarily due to the price vs. atmosphere they've created.
Downtown Seattle Gluten Free Restaurants
Do you mean a restaurant that is all GF, or do you want a place that is very good about GF dining within a certain cuisine/atmosphere/etc?
I don't know of any all GF places except for Impromptu, but I eat out all the time and I have a gluten allergy, so if you're looking for a specific kind of place where you can feel comfortable eating safely say what that is and I can try to make a rec!
Happy Hour/Light Dinner PDX
That's where we're actually going for dinner on Saturday! :)
I think we're going to have CC and Teardrop on our list and just see which one we can fit into better.
Thanks everyone for the great recs!!!
Eating in the bar somewhere on 2/14 SEA
Even if they are busy it seems like the wait could easily be dealt with by going down the street to Bricco or something. Though you probably wouldn't want to show up at 9pm and then have to wait 1+ hours.....
What about Sambar? They also don't take reservations.
You could also try Stumbling Goat, then if they're full run over to Oliver's Twist?
gorgeous george's in greenwood
I love Gorgeous George's, but I too primarly order it as takeout. The chicken kebabs (Shish Tawook - don't know if that's spelled right) are amazing, as is the hummus, greek salad, and some of the other kebabs. I would definitely recommend getting food from there, but if you stop by and the ambience isn't for you absolutely get takeout. It's delicious.
As for other recs in the neighborhood....I have enjoyed Kabab House a few times. I also like La Botana (cheap fast tacos, etc). There have been a number of new places that have opened since I've moved to a different hood, so I don't have the most up-to-date opinion. If you're looking for a nicer spot, Stumbling Goat is pretty good, as is Carmelita. Of course Red Mill is delicious for a weeknight dinner, and I've had some great soup from Picnic (and they have excellent wine choices). Chupacabra isn't amazing, but it's pretty decent and a nice place to grab a drink and a casual/cheap meal.
Recent PDX Park Kitchen Experiences?
I went last memorial day and did the tasting menu. It was good, but painfully slow. And herky jerky in the timing of dishes, etc.
If you do decide to go there, don't get the tasting menu if you're on a timeline (even though I think it's a great value, especially with multiple people, as you get a range of many dishes).
Happy Hour/Light Dinner PDX
Thanks for the recs everyone! I spent some time looking at these places online and they definitely all sound great. I think the front-runners are Clyde Common, Teardrop, and 23 Hoyt right now based on location and menus. Do you think all three of these places could accomodate a group of 8 in the bar? Do they take reservations? I know we don't want to make a reservation and end up sitting in the restaurant ordering a 2 - 3 course meal since we'll be doing that Saturday night elsewhere, but if they take reservations for the bar area, etc. that would be excellent.
Thanks again!
Happy Hour/Light Dinner PDX
I'm planning a bachelorette party in PDX for late February and am looking for a place to get drinks and food (in that order!) for eight people. We're staying downtown and to go somewhere that's fun and not too formal. We would like to be able to get appetizers or bar food (not along the lines of chicken tenders and nachos) with some drinks and be able to sit and/or stand comfortably with eight people.
I am considering Clyde Common, but have two concerns: 1) I'm unclear of their menu options, as I can't get the menu tab on their website to work and 2) I am not sure if it will accomodate 8 of us comfortably enough on a Friday evening.
Any feedback would be much appreciated. Alternative locations/ideas are also quite welcome! We're pretty adventurous eaters and like good cocktails, nice wine selection, and yummy food. We don't want to spent too much on food (not looking for formal $20+ entree location - unless they have a bar w/ smaller plates), as we're planning a lot of other meals out during the weekend.
Thank you!
Fresh Horseradish - SEA
I've purchased fresh horseradish at Ballard Market a number of times. I can't attest to it's availability through the seasons, but anytime I've wanted it, I've found it there!
PDX Group Dinner - Need help choosing one of the following...
Hi All,
I'm going to be in PDX early this spring for a bachelorette party weekend and one night we're planning a nicer dinner out. We'll be staying at the Embassy Suites, so based on what I've read online and heard about on previous trips to your fair city, I've narrowed down our choices to the following:
-higgins
-bluehour
-clyde common
-ten 01
We're looking for a place that can comfortably accomodate 8 people and that has an interesting and well executed menu. If you're familiar with Seattle dining, we love places like Restaurant Zoe, Crush, and Union. Any thoughts on which restaurant we might enjoy the most?
Thank you!
Best time to go to Lark
Yeah sorry, I've only been to Lark a few times, and once it was with a large group so we did get a reservation. In general (though I'm sure you know this), if I don't mind waiting for approx 1 hour I show up around 7pm or 9/9:15pm. My belief is that most places turn a lot of tables between 7 & 8. Take that for what it's worth. ;)
Best time to go to Lark
Are you okay with showing up at 7, putting your name down, then going either next door to Licorous or across the street to Cafe Presse for drinks? If so, that's what I'd personally do.
Help me decide
I like Zoe's food a bit more, but it is incredibly loud. If there's a group of you it will be incredibly difficult to have a conversation. If there's two of you, you may be able to hear each other if you talk very loudly.
Chorizo (Seattle)
If you're in Ballard, Ballard Market typically has a variety they make in-house. Otherwise, you could stop by Pike Place and get some from Uli's.
Chorizo + Nachos sounds amazing. yum.
Squab and Goose in Seattle?
Hi Matt,
If you live near downtown, you can always go to Don and Joe's Meats in the market (http://www.donandjoesmeats.com/). They typically carry goose and squab, though you can call ahead to ensure they'll have the items available for you. Apparently they're sourced from a purveyor in Oregon. You can read about them here: https://www.nickyusa.com/.
How to Find Tolerable Mexican Food?
Well 153rd and Aurora isn't too far from me, so thank you! I'm down in Ballard and go to Senor Moose probably far too often. Must mix it up!
How to Find Tolerable Mexican Food?
Hey allisonw, where may I find some of these joints? I love me some mexican food, and I always like to try new spots!
Best of Seattle - Help
It's a regional chain: http://www.anthonys.com/restaurants/locations.html
Seems like a fine place to go if you have little ones (though I don't, so what do I know).
Paseo - Ballard location
Apparently they're open until 8pm - is that the same as Fremont? I never go that late since they sometimes run out of things....
Downtown Seattle Dinner Recs
Le Pichet? It's French, downtown, and should be within your budget. Or perhaps Boat Street. Also French, also downtown, and maybe slightly more expensive, but I believe still in your budget.
Zoe (SEA)
A complete bummer for your wife, but I got a good chuckle out of that. Zoe is the only restaurant I've been carded at in 2 years...pretty silly.
Cafe Juanita, VERY DISAPPOINTING
I have a food allergy, so my choices are usually more limited compared to others. Having said that, I think most people at my table ordered octopus, rabbit, and risotto/tagliatelle. One person had the soup and loved it...
As I said earlier, I think kitchen's can have off nights, and it's clear to me that a) they were having an off night or b) ...I'm not sure...
If I remember, I'll post back to this thread after eating there again, but it's not until Sept 13th.
Cafe Juanita, VERY DISAPPOINTING
When I ate there three weeks ago I decided it was one of the best meals of my life. I had the octopus appetizer. I order octopus anytime I see it on a menu, and I was not disappointed in the least. The texture was wonderful, the chickpea puree was rich, and the herb sauce added a nice acidity.
My partner had the quail with leek goat cheese tart and strawberries. She said it was one of the best dishes she's ever eaten and an unexpected, but wonderful, combination of ingredients.
Next I had the risotto with squash blossoms and a poached egg. It was the best risotto I've ever tasted. It was incredibly rich and the texture was perfect. The others in my party shared the Tagliatelle with morels. They wished they'd ordered more than they did.
Lastly, I had the rabbit. I did find it to be salty, but I also found it to be incredibly rich and a nice contrast of flavors. The leg was wrapped in pancetta and stuffed with porcini, while the tenderloin was simply grilled. I thought this dish was successful in that you got one half that was rich, fatty, smoky, and salty, and one preparation that was simply to expose the flavors of tender rabbit. I loved it.
Perhaps I sound a bit enamored with the place, but in fact, I am. I went with a party of five, all of which absolutely loved it. Additionally, I'm going back with four more of my friends next month because I enjoyed it that much.
It's not to say a kitchen can't have an off night - I'm certain it happens. Having said that, I do believe they deliver an exceptional experience with outstanding food.
Can oat or sweet potato flour be substitutes for wheat flour?
I've never cooked with oat flour or sweet potato flour, so I can't attest to their qualities. Typically in GF baking, rice flour is used in combination with things like xanthan gum (to increase chewiness and bind the dough) and tapioca flour (I think this helps make it lighter). Also, you likely already know this, but many oats are not gluten free in that they're processed with wheat-containing products. You have to seek out GF oats (Bob's Red Mill is one brand). Here's a recipe from Alton Brown for GF Chocolate Chip Cookies: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/the-chewy-gluten-free-recipe/. Perhaps you can use this and add the oats to it to get what you're looking for.
Best Wineries to Visit in Woodinville?
I haven't been to Matthews, but I do enjoy their wine... that's probably not helpful though.
You could pose this question to the wine board, though I don't know how many of them have visited Woodinville. They are very knowledgable though.
Seattle weekday breakfast (with alcohol)
Perhaps Le Pichet or Cafe Presse? I think Cafe Presse has more options for breakfast, but if you can't make it up to Capitol Hill, then may Le Pichet would do?
If you don't mind the type of cuisine not being French, I've heard Lola has a great breakfast: http://www.tomdouglas.com/lola/breakfast.html.
Where has all the game gone?
I'd give Don and Joe's in Pike Place a call. Here's a link to their offerings: http://www.donandjoesmeats.com/meats.php.
In their FAQ they mention being able to order venison, pheasant, etc with a day's notice, and I think they carry rabbit much of the time.
