Need Brooklyn or NY-esque Gift Ideas!

Whimsy and Spice has some cute (and cutely packaged) stuff. They sell at the Flea and on their etsy shop. Probably easy to carry and appropriate for a female former colleague.

5 year anniversary dinner

We have been to all of those places more than once and still consider The Garden Cafe a special night out spot. Its really sweet and perfect for a celebratory dinner. Tried to go again for our anniversary last month but they were on vacation. Definitely worth checking out.

restaurant suggestions for parents bday

Ive taken both my parents and in-laws to tempo on various occasions. Everyone always loves it. Its quieter than most places on 5th, the vibe tends to be a bit calmer and the tables aren't squished together. I highly recommend it for parents.

7th to Prospect to Prospect Ave West Pizza+?

I would really love to know as well because I hoof it all the way over to Bene's across from the park around Reeve or whatever (right by lonelyville coffee). Its the only decent pizza I have eaten in the area so if you find yourself in the mood for a walk you should try it sometime. Looking forward to other rec's

Garden Cafe

My husband and I went a few weeks back for our anniversary. The food was both delicious and interesting. We thought of heading out to a usual haunt (al di la, applewood, etc) but decided on Garden Cafe since we had never been. It was a really wonderful experience and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone for a special occasion.

new to the belle harbor/howard beach area

I like Ginos on cross bay for lunch, they have pretty good pizza and great salads (I often crave the Portobella and Arugula and have to take a drive over there from Park Slope) My husband enjoys the small sandwiches they have in the front case. Sadly we have never tried the entrees but there are always tons of people eating in there so I'm assuming they are decent.

Need help choosing restaurant for fiancee's birthday dinner

I have to agree that maybe Saul isnt the first place I'd recommend for a romantic bday dinner. My husband and I didnt think it was the slightest bit romantic and I still talk about how tiny the portions were. My scallop dinner entree included 3 small scallops. It was laughable. Since you seem to consider the best restaurants in bklyn a regular night out maybe going somewhere in manhattan might feel a bit more special, or at least different. In that case you should take a look at the manhattan boards for great ideas but i'd have to recommend cru or hearth judging on your taste (which is very simiar to mine)

Recs. for a great ethnic restaurant that could handle a big (100ish) party in Brooklyn

If you are looking for something a bit more ethnic you can try out Sahara on Coney Island Avenue. Its a bit of an adventure to get there but it is in walking disance from the train. They have a number of party rooms, i'd go check it out and have a meal in person to see if its right for you. The food is Middle Eastern and very well suited to parties.

Falafel

I am a huge fan of Pick-a-Pita on 38th between 7th and 8th. Its a total hole in the wall but a very delicious and interesting falafel. The spicy sauce is green and i'm not sure what its made of but its incredible! Every falafel I've has since has fallen short.

suggestions for the best mail order xmas food gifts

Im not sure what kind of food gift you are looking for as you can order practically anything these days. If you are in search of a nice gift basket I like the ones from Dean and Deluca. They have a large assortment online in various price ranges.

Fish Market in Park Slope

Thanks to the responses I received I tried Fish Tales last night. It was great and we will definitely be going back. As for Fairway, I was disappointed the one time I purchased fish there so I never tried again. I will definitely check out the farmers market when I can. Thanks!

Fish Market in Park Slope

I have been having a hard time finding a great fresh fish market. Im sure its out there and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Park Slope preferred but would go to Carroll Gardens as well. It doesnt need to be fancy, just fresh.

Walla Walla onions

I would try Bermuda onions. They are pretty similar and usually found in the east vs Walla Walla in the west.

Restaurants/Pubs in London open on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day?

I will also be traveling to london at that time and noticed that Canteen will be open Christmas day. Looks like a really great option. Browns Hotel has Christmas day and Boxing day meals as well.

Best Brooklyn Prix Fixe?

We also use the Prix fixe weekday deals to try out restaurants and I've hit most of the ones listed on this board. I have to say I think Chestnut is the best deal for the quality of food and service. We finally made it to Saul last night and I was a bit disappointed with the selections. Yes its an amazing deal if you are going to try the place and don't mind sacrificing for the $30 deal but the choices leave a bit to be desired. None of my companions ended up going for the prix fixe. The variety of items you can get at Chestnut or 360 is just a much larger range at a very high quality. I just keep finding myself comparing to Chestnut and it is still tops. Not to say Saul isn't fabulous but if we're talking prix fixe, my vote is Chestnut as well.

Great salads in Park Slope

I really enjoy the salads at Press 451 on 5th Ave. They have great ingredients and use really interesting and delicious dressings. You can also add additional items to make them more substantial if thats what you are looking for.

best mezze in nyc

Sahara Restaurant on Coney Island Ave in Brooklyn is my go-to place for meze. The cold appetizer platter and the shepard salad is always impressive. The chicken and lamb kebobs are above average as well. Its a bit of a hike from Manhattan but its worth it. We like Tanoreen too-it is definitely a bit more upscale but Sahara is an experience not to miss.

Park Slope eating -- Beso vs. 12th street bar & grill vs. Bogota

I have to throw in a rec for 12th street. My husband and I had a very nice time there about a month ago and decided to go back with his parents when they came for a visit. The appetizers and salads are spectacular and the main courses are very strong as well. They have a semi decent wine list and a really nice vibe. Its a really cute place for a date.

Friends Visting - Ideas for somewhere near Union Sq.

I think Chat n Chew is casual, fun and not too expensive. I have taken people there before and there is definitely something for everyone. Its on 16th between union square and 5th and they are open late.

Porchetta on Smith St.

My husband was addicted to the banana pancakes at Banania. He's had 3 others since its closing and none came close. A friend was in town last weekend so we thought we'd give Porchetta a whirl. the brunch menu was EXACTLY the same as Banania. Exactly. Then the dishes came out, also exactly the same. They even had the bread basket w/jam. I'm thinking Prochetta=Banania, at least for brunch.

Family Dinner in Park Slope

Can anyone recommend a place that would be good for a group of 8, some from out of town. We need to entertain my inlaws but don't want to leave the neighborhood. We'd rather not suggest anywhere that might seem too expensive (at least some of the dishes need to be less than $20) since they will probably foot the bill. They are adventurous and love anything they think is very "New York" We do not need to stay in Park Slope proper, we are fine with other close neighborhoods as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
