Favorite Store-Bought Cheesecake?

Costco, $12.99 for an absolutely heavenly five(5) pound monster! There is no comparison.

So what are you making for Shavout?

Blintzes were at Brachs 4/$4 Costco did not carry them this year.

Costco cheesecake? Did I imagine it...?

Went to Gourmet Glatt and noticed cheese cakes at the Zomick counter. I found it amusing that they were charging $12.99 like Costco the *only* difference was that $12.99 buys you at Costco a five(5) pound cheese cake (88oz) while $12.99 buys you at Zomick's a one(1) pound (16oz) cake.

Amazing, simply amazing!

Costco cheesecake? Did I imagine it...?

I usually buy Costco's eggs, but with shavous almost here and Brach's lower prices coupled with the high usage of eggs for the 3 day yom tov I assume that the eggs would be fresh. I obviously would not go to Brachs just for the eggs, that would be silly but since I know that I will be there I figure I might as well save a few kopecks.

As to the milk, nobody touches Costco's prices. I hope all you people check the exp dates. They don't charge less for older milk and I always find a spectrum of dates.

Costco cheesecake? Did I imagine it...?

Absolutely amazing. I placed a post here in May 2009 where I noted that Costco was selling cheesecake for $12.99 and Strawberry cheesecake for $14.99. I went to Costco tonight and bought the Strawberry cheesecake for $14.99 and noted that the plain cheesecake was being sold for $12.99. Same price 4 years running! http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/623872

Plenty of frum people in the store. All the shredded cheese was gone so I will have to return. I did note many shopping carts with the cheese cake in them. As usual I wound up buying more stuff. Meal Mart Turkey breast (not the deli slices), Meal Mart pastrami, nice package of flanken for my chulent, package of corn and a gallon of milk. Eggs while nicely priced was still slightly cheaper at Brachs.

Costco cheesecake? Did I imagine it...?

Yes, it depends on location. In Lawrence NY the bakery section is kosher and they make an awesome one. I will be purchasing one tonight. My daughter offered to make cheesecakes for me but I told her that the Costco one was so yummy and so cheap that I don't want her to bother.

Come to think about it, how are they able to make a 5+ pound cheese cake for $13? The raw materials probably go for more than that Ah, but they are Costco and they get discounts we can only dream about!

So what are you making for Shavout?

I plan on plunging in my second frig tomorrow night and then head off to Costco to by their cheese cake. I am afraid to leave it for the last minute in case they run out.

As to cheese blintz I was dismayed that Costco did not have Gabila's cheese blintzes. I emailed the company to find out if Costco or BJs would be carrying it. They emailed back saying that Brachs and Season's will be carrying them. I went tonight to Brachs and saw that they indeed were carrying them however it was frozen while the Costco ones were not frozen. As it turns out, a few feet away from the freezer was this young lady behind a table giving out samples of, you guessed it, Gabila's cheese blintzes! Tasted wonderful!

So as it stands shavous will be an easy yom tov. Friday night/shabbos - 2 Brachs chicken specials and chulent and potato kugel. Shabbos night something light because all the chazerei that the various shuls will be offering. Sunday lunch, MAJOR, MAJOR kiddush at Chabad of the 5 Towns (the famous Popack yearly kiddush). Sunday night something really light after the major lunch fressing event - maybe omlets. Monday lunch, cheese blintzes, baked ziti. Cheesecake will be served at all dairy meals - even breakfast :)

Not too hard - and cheap! Rough numbers - $20 chicken specials $8 kugels, $13-16 cheese cake, $16 blintzes, ~$15 baked ziti (home made - silly to buy, I think Central Perks wants $45 for it). Maybe I will pick up a watermelon $6

Looking for prepared blintzes W/O filling

Bummer, went to the Target in the Green Acres Shopping Center - They were closed! The next nearest one is some 8 miles away. Not worth the shlep - especially at today's gas prices and my car needing Premium.

While I was there I went to BJs, Unlike Costco where every freekin time I go there I spend $100+ at BJs I wound up spending $20. I figured maybe they would carry cheese blintzes - nope. Very little catering to the frum 5 towns crowd. Costco has that sewn up.

Looking for prepared blintzes W/O filling

I couldn't find it this year at Costco, if anyone sees it this week - give a holler!

Heavenly cheesecake for Shavous

Here we are a year later, is Costco's 5 pound cheese cake still $12.99? Went to Brachs on Friday and they had a pathetically small one for over $18.

Tuna size turnaround

Solid white Albacore and it was Starkist.

Tuna size turnaround

Went to Costco today and noticed that Chicken of the Sea was labeled "New bigger cans". 7oz! What also surprised me was that it was significantly cheaper than Kirkland - 8 cans for $14 vs cos 6 cans for $7.

Would you eat baconaise? (It is OU certified)

Ah, the lure of the forbidden fruit!

Can someone help fill out this list:

Bacon -> Beef Fry
Crab -> Mock Crab (I guess)
Ham ->
Pork Chops ->
Lobster ->
Shrimp ->

Are there any other major food item that we are missing and (hopefully have kosher alternatives) after all, if we can send a man to the moon why cant they make a kosher substitute for _________ (fill in the blank).

:)

So what are you making for Shavout?

I plan on having mostly diary meals. Maybe one meat meal. I LOVE dairy! From a food point of view shavout is my favorite yom tov.

A bacon alternative? ??? Think I may have found it.....

As one who never had bacon, is it really that good or is it because we are not allowed to eat it that makes us yearn to find a substitute?

So what are you making for Shavout?

>My Rav holds that you can use the oven for either, as long as it's clean, and has cooled off

I imagine most hold this way. If one thinks back not many years ago before one had self cleaning ovens and one did not have the luxury of having two ovens I imagine *everyone* used that one oven for all their baking needs.

Is there any source for Kishka made with beef intestine?

I too miss the kishka of yesteryear. It was firmer, grittier, had pieces of "stuff" in it. The current crop is pastier and leave this oily reddish slick when heated. However I can do without the intestines.

So what are you making for Shavout?

I forgot, a HUGE cherry/strawberry cheese cake from Costco! I know, you did say "making" and this would be in the category of "having", but mama-miah it is sooo good (and dirt cheap)!

So what are you making for Shavout?

Cheese blintzes, lots of cheese blintzes!

Anyone baking schlissel challah?

Ah, so my daughter is not crazy. She said that she is making a mess load of challas and she asked me if I had a new key. I looked at her like she was nuts.

Pesach HOTELS 2012

I see now why the programs don't include prices in their ads!

Reviews of Passover Hotel Programs?

Interesting, I once visited my brother-in-law at a Gateways pesach program. They had a room with nothing but choclates and it was being hit very hard so I imagined that with 24 hour tea rooms and many meals and kidushim per day I would assume weight gain is a given. I see what goes on in my shul when there is a kiddush. People eat like there is no tomorrow so if one extrapolates this pattern for 8 days - gevald! I gained weight this pesach without any chocolates, pizzas, cakes (save one brownie and one pudding pie) I would have exploded if I had omlet stations, tea rooms, chocolates, BBQs, kidushim etc. However it is true that I did not have a golf course to go to burn off all those calories.

One year I went to the Sheraton in Jerusalem for pesach. Things are different in Israel. No 24 hour tea rooms, you want food, you pay for it save the Israeli breakfasts - but oh, those breakfasts!

Last year I went to Kutchers for a 6 day 5 night stay for shavous. Good thing they had a Walmart nearby in Monticello for me to buy a new (larger) pants - no kidding!

Reviews of Passover Hotel Programs?

I would love to see the following study

(1) Name of program
(2) Cost pp
(3) Weight gained
(4) Will go back again (Y,N)

This will speak volumes by analyzing the various correlations, if one exists.

As an example is there a correlation between weight gained and rate of return, weight gained and cost of program, average weight gained per program, return rate vs program cost, return rate and program etc.

any kosher hotels left in the Catskills?

Sounds real nice. They have a button for Shavousbut it is non-functional at the moment.

Pesach HOTELS 2012

The $250.

It started with a simple fishing trip using Groupon bought tickets on chol hamoed. Checked with Google to find eating places open in Brooklyn on pesach and this was the closest to Sheepshead Bay. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the Delmonico 22oz for $60 but, hey, that is my favorite steak. I should have cut out the soups @$10/bowl and $12 for the Crème brûlées.

Pesach HOTELS 2012

True, pesach is but a memory and I am starting to get hungry again. A three day yom tov is much too taxing for many and a hotel getaway is a must.

Last year Shavous was Wed-Thurs and Kutcher's had an extended program that ran from Tues - Sun 6 days 5 nights. That was a great vacation getaway. The hotel had seen better days, but it brought back some nice memories and I enjoyed my stay. Since Shavous this year robs us from Memorial day I may be compelled to go away to take away the pain of having a 3 dayer to deal with compounded by the loss of Memorial day.

Did anyone say HOME for Pesach this year? Highlights of your meals?

They had violations and were not allowed to open. I found it suspicious that they would close them up right before pesach - smacked of anti-semitism. As they say, you can't fight city hall especially two days before pesach.

I found the Meal Mart items not bad. I have been buying the turkey breasts for quite a while. The brisket was not bad but I am not a big eater of red meat (except for rib steaks). The kishka was tasty, stuffed cabbage was ok - sweet sauce and the meat dense - I guess it really needed the rice to lighten it up. My meatballs were made using Costco bought chopped meat.

Pesach HOTELS 2012

Depends on the number of people and savings. If it were 5 people I would take the $10,000 savings and go out, many times, to fancy Manhattan restaurants throughout the year. Another option would be to give the savings for Tzedakah I would imagine that 10 grand would go a long way to pay for 10 poor families to make pesach next year.

Pesach cost me between $700 - $800 for food. This was for 3 people with 8 for the seder. (I am NOT counting the ridiculous $250 that I paid for a dinner at T-Fusion steakhouse for 3 on chol hamoed).

Did anyone say HOME for Pesach this year? Highlights of your meals?

For years I went away for pesach until the year that the Tamarack Lodge cancelled their program one day before erev pesach(!!!) and I lost all my money (moral, pay by charge card or pay at the end of the program!).

Anyway, I had:

Brisket - Costco (Meal Mart)
Turkey breast - Costco (Meal Mart)
BBQ Chicken - Brachs
Stuffed cabbage - Costco (Meal Mart)
Meatballs - homemade
Chicken cutlets (fried using eggs & matzo meal coating)
Chicken soup - home made (still have a half a gallon left over)
Chopped liver/ liver saute - homemade
Potato kugel - Brachs, half steamer sized $19 - delicious and great value
cranberry apple crisp - homemade
Gefilta fish - A & B loafs
Matzo cheese lasagna - homemade
Zucchini souffle - homemade
Cole slaw - MAJOR rip off from Chap-a-nash 2lbs $15! and not even that good
Kishka - Costco (Meal Mart)
Brownies - homemade
frozen chocolate pudding pie - homemade

salads, soda, fruits etc

Most interesting find this Pesach?

La Yogurt w/fruit at the bottom @$.50 each KLP.

Hard pressed to find yogurt chametz during the year at that price!
