Food in Little Tokyo

Here's a few more ideas...

Sushi: R23 - http://www.r23.com/ Wonderful sushi, maybe the best in LA.
Ramen: Daikokuya - http://www.daikoku-ten.com/ I hope your family likes long simmered, rich pork broth.
Yakatori: Yakitori Koshiji - in Weller Court, grilled stuff on a stick, lots of fun to eat.
Dessert: Frances Bakery - Honda Plaza, A Japanese take on French pastries...fantastic.

trendy mexican

In addition to La Serenata and Malo, you could try La Huasteca in old town Pasadena on S. Fair Oaks. Comfortable room, very attentive staff, full bar, nice sauces.

REAL CUBAN FOOD

It's a bit far but you might try Habana Cafe, 11402 Old River School, Downey, CA (562) 776-7251. I also like the coffee at Cafe Tropical in Silverlake.
