Recs near the Kew Gardens criminal court on Queens Blvd?

I've been called for Grand Jury duty. If I end up on the GD, I'll be there all month. Any recommendations? Places to stay away from?

I'm pretty open to everything, with the exception of fish.

I especialy like Thai, Mexican and Indian, not a huge fan of pizza, unless the mood strikes.

Thanks for your help!

Where to buy humanely-raised/organic/anti-biotic-free meat?

I am pretty sure there was a meat vendor there on Saturday, but I am not 100%.

Kike's Mexican in Sunnyside

Spicy Mina is over on broadway and 65th St (maybe 64th?) in Woodside. Just off the BQE Broadway exit and the G/V/R stop

Been meaning to try this place since I walk by it all the time. Did you have anything else there?

Cheese shops in Queens?

Are there any decent cheese shops around Woodside??? I was just contemplating a nice gouda and realised I haven't a clue where to get it in my neighborhood. I haven't seen any, but that doesn't mean I'm just not paying attention.

Where's a great Diner - LIC / Sunnyside / Woodside / Maspeth

Woodside: Stop Inn is really good for breakfast (61st and Roosevelt). I like the Rainbow as well, just around the corner, on Wooside Ave by Sean Og's. Their burgers are way better than Stop Inn.

Maspeth: Fame Diner on Grand Ave (71st I think)is good as well. The only issue I've had with them is that when I ask for American cheese, I tend to get some sort of cheese wiz type of situation. Not good. A new place just opened on the corner of Grand and Remsen. Only been once, so far, but their burger was really good as well.

In Sunnyside, go to Rose on Queens Blvd, I think its around 44th or 45th. I believe it is still owned by the brother of the guy who owns the Butcher Block.

All of the above have breakfast all day (it's not a diner otherwise!) but I've never had corned beef hash at any of them. I don't trust the Irish to make corned beef anything. It's usually just awful.

Harshest Bruni review yet, that I've read

"He kept marveling at its fury and aftermath"
"Desserts were dead-on one night, dead ringers for Sara Lee another."
“It’s the special rack-of-lamb veal chop”

I cannot breathe I am laughing so hard!!!!!

OMG, I love Tates. I can eat a whole package in one day a work by myself. I've seen them in some of the nicer deli's and also some independent natural food stores.

De Mole - Tilapia Salad sooo good

Oh, that would be awesome! 4 blocks from me!!! For dinner I call ahead and go pick it up. It's way too much of a zoo in there at night. When I go for breakfast I get there right at 10am. Sometimes I have to wait about 10 minutes until they are ready for me, but it's sooooo worth it.

I was just thinking, no dreaming, about De Mole and how easily I would kill for some of their Huervas a la Mexicana. Perhaps I may have to swing over there for dinner, but seriously, it's a little hot to be walking around.....

Bakery in Garden City?

I'm looking for a bakery in or around GC. Did Leonetti's open yet? Are there any others? I'm looking for little cakes, pastries, brownies, that sort of thing; not cakes.
Thanks!!

Foodie Neighborhood?

I live in Queens (Woodside), so I'm way biased and think you should live here. You might want to check out places in Sunnyside or Woodside as well as Astoria, since I have found they are similar in cost of apartments. Forest Hills is nice as well, but I think (not sure) that it's not as easy to get around over there if you don't have a car.

I'll help you out with some of your questions in Queens and then someone else can counter argue for Brooklyn. :)

I'm not sure about farmers markets in Queens, since I am in a CSA, but Union Square isn't a long subway ride from either borough and they have a fantastic green market, which is open 4 days a week.

I can't help you with fish, but I am sure someone else on this board can help you with that.

I assume when you are asking about an Italian deli, you mean some place with cured meats hanging down from the ceiling, bread all over the place and cases full of fresh pasta. My Italian deli in in Bayside and I am pretty loyal to them. Unless you have a car, that's not really a good option at all for you. I would bet Forest Hills or Kew Gardens would have something good in that regard.

Queens has some good little shops for food, as well as the usual chain supermarkets. There is also a Trader Joe's here and right next to that is the Amish market. The only other Trader Joe's are in Manhattan. There are no Whole Foods in the outer boroughs, only in the city.

If you are looking for good ethnic food, Queens is where it's at. If you can get a place in close range to the 7 train, you'll have everything you need, expecially Thai, Indian/Bengali, Asian (in Flushing) and Mexican. Astoria has good Greek and a pretty good bar scene. If you search this board for 7 train, you'll get some really good hits. Also, BrianS is really good at reviewing places, so check out his stuff. You'll see him and a bunch of other regular posters on those threads. Pay attention because they really know what they are talking about!

As far a wine in Queens, I like Lowry on Queens Blvd, but I understand there is a good wine shop in Forest Hills. There is also a liquor store at the Costco in LIC.

I know I didn't give you a whole lot there, but I am confident that everyone else can help fill in the blanks. That said, I think you should move to Queens.

Good luck with everything!!!

How to cook perfect asparagus?

Asparagus is like heaven when ccoked like this. I'll make them for a snack, a side dish and sometimes I'll roast a couple, let them cool and throw them on top of a salad.

I will also toss them in while pasta is cooking for the last 2 minutes or so and then bake them the rest of the way in a casserole with the pasta, some ham and whole milk and chicken stock. Sprinkle a some bread crumb on the top and bake it for about 10 min or until the liquid is all bubbly. Lovely comfort dish.

Cornish hen

Want to cook a cornish hen but haven't a clue how to do it. If I am going to stuff it with rice, do I cook the rice first? I'd like to cook one without having it butterflied, but it's not that big of a deal.

Not a fan of KFC, but I do love Popeyes. The KFC is at 58th and Queens Blvd. I hit up popeyes whan I'm at work, but I was looking for something that wasn't a chain... :)

Fried chicken in Woodside area

Yeah, I noticed that. How are those places? I'm always temped to go in, but then I just never do. Have you tried that new (?) cafe on 58th St, just past St Sebastians, walking towards Queens Blvd? I walk past it all the time. I grabbed a menu and it looks like it could be goo, but I never see anyone in there.

Fried chicken in Woodside area

I love fried chicken. By love, I mean I could eat it every day, 3 times a day. Once I start eating it, I crave it constantly and have to exert great self control not to go nuts with it. It becomes more of an obesssion.

There seems to be a lack of places to get it around here. I have a great chicken place in the Bronx, but that's not exactly convient unless I am up there. The only acutal chicken place I have seen in UFC on Roosevelt. Is that any good? Is there somewhere I can go when I NEED to get some chicken?

Dim sum and Jade Asian... need some help

OK, so I've settled on Jade Asian for Dim Sum. Here's the thing: I've never had Dim Sum. What's the story with it? Is it only available on certain days or times of day? What are the good dishes? We have vegetarian going and one other who doesn't really eat seafood at all (me). We are also slpit 50/50 on spicy food. Not even sure if that would be an issue, but I figured I'd mention it.

Dining in NYC before NYC Ballet

I like Cafe Fiorello as well, but I've only been for lunch before the show on the weekends. Usually for an evening show we hit up O'Neals on 64th.

Quesadillas from the cart at Roosevelt/61st, Woodside

I was heading over to get a taco on saturday afternoon around 12:30 and the cart wasn't there!! I hit up the tomale cart just on the other side of the produce stand, and I have to say it was pretty good. I got the "not spicy" version. It was scalding hot and $1.50. Only downside was that I couldn't eat it while walking, obviously. I just popped over to the Dugout and ate it there.

I never see those guys get much business but I'll def be back.
