Making Sense, your tips on buying spices in small quantities is a great one. Same for your idea on sniffing the contents, not the container.

I've found that planning a few meals that incorporate an ingredient, be it fresh basil or ricotta, in the same week is a good way to avoid food waste. And while stores steer you towards buying large quantities of just about everything (through tempting prices), it's important to think about whether or not you'll use it before it goes bad.
