Birthday Cake in Orange County

I love Blackmarket but unfortunately my family doesn't, so I can't go there. They thought the cake was too dry, which didn't make any sense to me. The rebel in me is tempted to just go there anyway...

Birthday Cake in Orange County

I'm looking for a place to buy a birthday cake for my daughter's 1st birthday party and I need some input from my fellow chowhounders. We're going with a pink pirate theme, and I have a design that I'd like them to work with so decent decorating skills are a must, but the hound in me also wants a decent tasting cake. We live in Irvine so I'd like to stay relatively close to my house. The places I'm considering so far are:

Cinderella Cakes - This place has mixed reviews, but supposedly they decorate cakes well. Does anyone know if this place is really expensive?

Susie Cakes - Not sure of their decorating abilities, the pictures on their website would lead me to believe they'd do a decent job.

Layer Cake Bakery - I love their cakes but not sure how well they can decorate. This is my first choice since they are so close to my house.

I know the best place for decorating would be Let Them Eat Cake but I just can't afford them. I also had a cake decorated at Black Forest Bakery and I wasn't very impressed, the cake was good though.

Thanks!

Valerie

Food Delivery/Catering in Orange County

Thanks for the suggestions! I didn't even think about Lee's as an option (mmm eggrolls!), and it's close enough for me to pick it up the day of the event. I live close to Gelsons so I might use their deli to get some fruit/cheese platters too.

Food Delivery/Catering in Orange County

We're throwing our daughter's 1st birthday party at our neighborhood clubhouse, and I need some suggestions for food delivery and/or catering options. I'm willing to pick up the food if the place is near my house (Irvine). We'll probably have around 30 people at this event.

It will be just a casual pool party, and I'd like to keep the costs down as much as possible. At first I thought about hiring a taco caterer, but I don't think our association would be OK with having someone cook inside the clubhouse (there's no kitchen, and no easy place to set up outside). I also thought I could keep costs down by serving appetizers or finger foods. Even nicely made sandwiches (not Subway) and salads would be perfectly fine with me. There won't be many older kids at this party so keeping it child-friendly is not a concern.

Thanks in advance!

Anniversary Dinner Lake Tahoe

My husband and I are taking a trip to Lake Tahoe in 2 weeks to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. We are staying in South Lake Tahoe. I need to find a restaurant for our anniversary celebration dinner, and I'm at a loss. My husband is a 'meat and potatoes' kind of guy, so anything too exotic is out of the question. We normally eat at steakhouses for anniversary celebrations, so I'm looking for something similar to Morton's or Ruth's Chris.

I see that Evans is highly recommended but I'm concerned that might even be too weird for hubby, and from the pictures of inside the restaurant I have a slight concern we might be a little too 'young' for this place (we're in our early 30's). Please correct me if I'm wrong! :)

I see that the Montbleu resort has a steak house, but I couldn't find any reviews here for it. We are willing to drive outside of South Lake Tahoe for really good chow with a somewhat romantic ambiance. We don't have to go to a steak house, but it needs to be a place where hubby can get a good steak.

Thanks!

Dairy-free Bakery in OC

Thanks for the replies! I did some more research and found a kosher (pareve) bakery in Costa Mesa by the name of Sunflour Bakery. They make cakes and cupcakes so I'll probably stop by soon to sample their work. http://sunflourbakery.net/

Dairy-free Bakery in OC

My birthday is coming up and unfortunately I cannot eat dairy (my baby is allergic to dairy protein), and I want my birthday cake! I haven't had much luck finding a bakery in the Irvine area (but I am willing to drive) that is willing to make a dairy-free cake for me. I've already tried Whole Foods (they have vegan cakes but they're tiny and expensive!) and the bakery at Gelsons. Is there a vegan bakery around here that I'm not aware of, or maybe a bakery that accommodates people with allergies? As a last resort I guess I can make myself a cake, but I'm not the best baker. :(

Thanks in advance!

Beef Jerky in Orange County

Thanks everyone for the responses! We leave Saturday morning, so I won't be able to go to the swap meet. I did pick some jerky up at Coscto, and since I have easy access to 99 Ranch I'll check that out too. I've been to the place in Lake Forest (I believe its a Russian store?), but I don't remember if they had jerky there.

Beef Jerky in Orange County

My husband and I are about to embark on a 14-day road trip across the Southwest, and need some sustenance to keep us going through those long hauls in the desert. I was hoping to order some beef jerky online, but I'm not about to pay $20+ for fast shipping through mahogany smoked meats. Are there any stores in the Orange County area (I'm in Irvine), that carry any delicious beef jerky? We like it spicy and moist (our fave is the habanero at mahogany). If not, maybe a place we can stop at on the way out of OC (via 55/91/60 freeways)?

Thanks in advance.

Where is Los Cotijas in Tustin?

Elmo,

You were SO close! Its a small place so I can see how it is easy to miss. Its on the corner of 1st and Newport, in Larwin Square. The shopping center also has a Kragen, Rite Aid, and I believe a Big 5. Its located next to the donut shop in the row of shops where the Rite-Aid and that Pineapple Grill bar is. If you drive towards the corner where Kragen is you'll see it.

Good Luck! It will be worth it when you bite into those delicious fish (or shredded beef) tacos.
