Why should I buy tilapia?

This could be an argument for many foods (some expensive). I for the life of me can not figure out lobster. I have told friends of mine that I will buy their lobster if they eat the entire thing in front of me without anything to flavor it. No butter, no lemon. Just plain. So far, nobody has taken me up on it and their usual excuse "I want to enjoy it." I love butter and lemon too, but I'm not paying for a lobster to taste it.

Also my feeling on Filet Mignon. Without seasoning it well and properly, I don't feel it has any taste whatsoever. I realize people love it, but what exactly do they love about the meat itself?

your favorite food movie..

Good Call with Moonstruck. I also always felt a personal attachment to that film, because the Bakeri, Cammareri's was the bakery my parents went for all their bread in the 70's and early 80's. The two ladies behind the counter were actually in the movie.

Why should I buy tilapia?

Disliking tilapia is the new "thing," especially on Chowhound. Is it a flavorful fish? Not really, but you can make any dish with Tilapia that you would normally make with cod or sole. I made a tilapa francese and it was amazing. Had I used another white fish it would have been unrecognizable anyway, so for about $2-3 less per lb, why not. Sounds like nothing, but if you want to have a light fish dish once a week, that saves you a bundle in the long run.

As for the muddy taste, I'm scared to know where people get their tilapia.

Maggie Spillane's - New Best Place to Watch a Game?

Went out for the Rangers/Devils game last night at Maggie's in Fleetwood. Sat at the bar outside on the roof. Two big TVs at the bar. Another huge outdoor TV on the side near the side street and a projection TV on the side facing Grammattan. Have to say, it was a beautiful setting and night for a game. Good service, nice looking women (and men) and a very laid back, comfy vibe.

I have only been there two other times and watch games downstairs at the bar. A little cramped, but an energetic sports crowd. Haven't eaten there yet, so can't comment on the food.

Wheat Thins - Spicy Buffalo

Saw these for the first time and gave them a try. The spice makes them addictive, but can't say they taste anything like buffalo wing sauce. More like cayenne pepper dust and salt. I also found they really overtake anything you try and eat it with. Doubt I'll buy them again

Food (not drinks) that help ease a headache?

Bananas before going to bed after a night of drinking is a fool proof way to avoid a hangover. That and chocolate milk.

If you're already drunk....hash browns, french fries or potato pancakes. The greasier the better

Foods you dislike buying—but sometimes need to

I don't cook as much as I used to, but I always hated when I had food in the freezer and forgot to defrost it Then having to run out and buy something from the supermarket that I had at home. Drove me crazy

"real" chinese food??

I live in NY and in the 70's and early 80's before everything became so commercial we would go to authentic places. I also had the honor of going to Chinatown in SF with two food critics. In both, I had jellyfish, bamboo shoots, different types of dumplings which were light and airy, not dense like most in takeout places (which I do like). Duck dishes were also very common and Peking duck is eaten in China I am told. I also remember there being tons of noodle dishes. Even more so than dishes containing rice.

How You Like It - Home Vs Dining Out

Just wondering about the tuna. I love to cook tuna rare at home...usually have it raw out

Best Chain Breakfast?

It truly amazes me that almost everyone disregarded your "running late and pick something up quick" comment and everyone wrote comments on sit down places.

McDonald's Egg McMuffin is the easiest and fastest and honestly not that unhealthy for a starter meal.
Subway does a egg white and cheese sandwich (and you can put peppers, spinach, etc on it)
Dunkin Donuts reduced fat Blueberry muffins are good (get them early, they dry out)
Cosi has a florentine wrap, but they are painfully slow service wise, so speed might not make this an option.
I rarely eat breakfast out and almost never get these things, but speed and health wise, not bad options

Buffalo Wild Wings???

I have only been once and my experience was quite nice. Mango Habanero wings were nice with a residual heat that was quite hot. Beer selection was excellent. We sat at the bar and the service was spot on. Bartender was overly nice and apologized when her shift ended and we offered to pay her and start a new tab.

The complaints about the utensils and paper plates/baskets seems silly to me. You're eating wings, why do you care what they are served in? Anyone who claims these wings are terrible is exaggerating. Are they the best? No, but they are far from being bad.

your favorite food movie..

Big Night is great and knowing Tucci's love of fine dining and wine makes it even more special, but strictly speaking about great movies, Julie & Julia is hands down the best food movie. The food is a supporting actor in this masterpiece and the final scene, is not only poignant, but hilarious.

Honorable mention goes to Chocolat & Babette's Feast

The best food scene in a movie that has nothing to do with food, would have to be 9 1/2 weeks. Although, I do have to say, the baby corn scene in Big was pretty great too.

My Love Affair With Worcestershire Sauce [moved from Home Cooking]

It actually pains me when I go to BBQs and people don't season their burger meat with some WS. At home, for me it's S&P, a little garlic powder, cumin and WS. I usually put the WS and then mix it in. Then season the burgers. It makes the burgers so much tastier than anything anyone else I know makes. Especially if the meat doesn't have a high fat count. I use a little more when making Turkey or Bison burgers.

"Least Favorite Vegetable" Poll

I do like it in gumbo, but it is true, it needs to be used sparingly

Station House - Bronxville

I'm pretty sure at 3-4am if you were at Pete's you would have thought a shoe tasted pretty good. I was hanging at a place on last winter on St. Mark's Place and there is an awful pizzeria that sells $1 slices across the street. After six hours of drinking, that pizza was like eating caviar. I do happen to agree. It was a nice greasy burger.

"Least Favorite Vegetable" Poll

Rarely do I read every post in a thread that is this long. I almost have to question people's foodie credibility with some of these hates. Onions, eggplant, spinach, beans, brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes & okra? These are all amazing.

I can't really say I hate these, but radishes can sometimes take over a salad. Need to be sliced thin in my opinion. I don't love beets (I despise Borscht), but can't say I've eaten them enough to hate them. Only veggie I've had that didn't agree with my buds was celeriac, but I tried making a celeriac au gratin and I think I messed it up. Was supposed to have a potato like texture, but didn't.

If I had to pick one veggie I abstain from eating at all costs, it's cooked carrots. Ironically fresh carrots are probably my second favorite veggie. For me it's almost a complete texture issue, because if there is at least some bite, I can eat a plate full of cooked carrots.

"Least Favorite Vegetable" Poll

+1 on fried okra. One of my faves

"Least Favorite Vegetable" Poll

Wow, my father made them with bacon and onions and it was one of the best things I've ever had and I thought I didn't like them. Not one bite was remotely bitter. All due respect, but something is going wrong in the preparation if they are bitter. I've heard that overcooking is the biggest mistake made and leaves them bitter.

How You Like It - Home Vs Dining Out

Funny. I always make burgers and put them on English Muffins at home, but I hate when places try and mix it up with anything other than a good hamburger bun. I don't want Muffins, bread, brioche rolls or wedge rolls. If it's burger time, I want a nice sesame seed bun.

How You Like It - Home Vs Dining Out

I'm with you on food choices on dining out. I almost always order fish or something complex. I live in a studio apartment, so cooking certain fish isn't a great way to leave the apartment. Those Febreeze commercials lie, haha.

Station House - Bronxville

Chatted with my friend who accompanied me and asked him about his bacon cheddar burger and french onion soup. I asked because he had the same combo at Piper's Kilt last night. He said the Station House food was awful in comparison. Mentioned that the soup was OK, but he didn't finish his burger and fries weren't good. I actually liked my fries.

Station House - Bronxville

When I refer to Pete's as the old Pete's...I'm talking 90's. Solid burger joint, good wings, nice beer specials. Last time I ate there, was over five years ago and I was greatly disappointed. Small tasteless burgers, awful wings, but the beer was good and cold and prices reasonable. It was a great place once, hope it returns. As the other burger options in Bronxville are pretty poor

Turkey Burger seasonings and moisteners

I make my TBs medium rare. I can't eat anything that is bordering on well. Probably not the safest thing, but I've never gotten sick, so I stick with it

How You Like It - Home Vs Dining Out

Does anyone make things at home differently than when they order out? I am only talking about things you are clearly capable of making like they do in restaurants.

Home - hamburger (almost never cheese)
Out - always a cheeseburger - usually bleu

Home - hot sauce on almost everything I eat
Out - never ask for hot sauce unless it's bland chili or a breakfast burrito

Home - chicken & pork - medium rare.
Out - I don't normally state a preference unless asked.

Home - regular grilled cheese closed
Out - almost always open face if they can

Home - never ever drink alcohol with meals
Out - almost always have a drink while eating.

Turkey Burger seasonings and moisteners

I must admit, I'm a little confused. Dry? My biggest problem with turkey burgers always seems to be too much moisture, to the point where they don't hold together. I usually season with S&P, cumin, smoked parika and a dollop of GP mustard. When they are about ready I might splash a little Worchesterchire sauce or Sriracha if I want a little spice.

Those weird things you eat when you are in your kitchen

When I am done with a jar of pickles, I always leave it in the fridge. When I am thirsty or a little dehydrated, I love drinking the pickle juice. Now that I have diverticulitis, it will have to be strained, because I can't have seeds.

A lot of people mentioned butter. I've been known to take a spoon of mayo from time to time as a quick snack.

Those weird things you eat when you are in your kitchen

I'm embarrassed by the amount of things I've put bleu cheese on. But you are right, they are perfect for fries

Those weird things you eat when you are in your kitchen

I actually made a peanut butter, maple syrup and sriracha sandwich fairly recently.

Station House - Bronxville

Pete's is now under new ownership. I haven't eaten there in years, but heard the food had gone way downhill. Not sure about the new place. Station house isn't going to wow you. I hear Kraft has much better food than both and the new 143 place has decent food.

What are your FAVORITE meals or dishes to enjoy when it's HOT outside?

Good Call. I remember years ago I was a roofer. One of the guys offered to buy lunch for everyone on a 100 degree day. He came back with cantelope and honeydew melons and proscuitto and sopressata. Perfect for a hot day.
