cross country trip need recs esp from Memphis TN to Albuquerque NM

We're taking the same trip this summer (and have done something similar several years ago). We did stop at the Big Texan for the kitch factor. Steaks were fine, service hysterical. The waitress responded to our orders and questions, each time (no lie) with " Well, Awl Rightie Then (deep Texan accent)." It became our throw-away line for the rest of the trip. My husband maps out the trip around golf course, while I'm always on the lookout for good restaurant tips. So will be following this with interest. Our first trip we used Jane and MIchael Stern's Roadfood extensively. In Memphis we ate at Rendezvous and Corky's for the BBQ experience. Not sure that I'd do either a second time. In Oklahoma City Cattleman's Steakhouse seemed caught in a time warp, which was kind of fun (very good steak). What's caught your interest so far, in terms of planning?

What were your FIRST three cookbooks?

Got these when I got married in 1971! And I still refer to all of them. I probably used the NYT more than the other two, although my Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing is from JB.

Try this for more juice from lemons and limes

You just took me back to my childhood. We had one of those juicers too. And wearever pans. I wonder why they stopped making them? Not sure it's progress.

Meritage: Some Questions

My niece got me the gift certificate to Meritage based on your reviews. I frequently am reassured about the quality of a restaurant because it has your stamp of approval, so just wanted to say thanks.

Meritage: Some Questions

I received a gift certificate to Meritage for Christmas, so I am eagerly awaiting your report! Also as a senior am conscious of the noise level, so thanks for asking about that too.

Good southern barbecue joints/restuarants near Trenton or Philadelphia

Smoke'n Dudes on Neshaminy Blvd in Bensalem has good BBQ. I couldn't check their menu for chopped vs pulled. Their hush puppies were very light; the couple of times I've been here I've always wanted to try their apple fritters because the hush puppies were so good.

Any good (non-chain) restaurants in or near lower bucks county

I completely agree about Blue Sage. What are the Indian restaurants? We were sorry to see Aroma close, but are always willing to drive for a new Indian experience, although my husband isn't keen on strictly vegetarian options.

Snows clam chowder tragedy

Neat. I'll be interested to hear what you think.

Snows clam chowder tragedy

Chances are slim. Bookbinders was a famous Philadelphia restaurant for the last half of the last century (maybe longer, but my memories aren't). I'd be happy to send you a couple of cans if you can't find it. Though how we negotiate that exchange of address might be problematic.

Snows clam chowder tragedy

Couldn't agree with you more. I now buy Bookbinder's. It reminds me of the way Snow's used to be. I don't follow directions on can which say add 1/2 can of milk and I add a whole can of some kind of cream (if you want chowder, you don't use skim milk). Clams are clearly discernible.

Recommendation for Mail Order Dessert?

I need to send my DIL's mother a Christmas dessert (she's in TX). Any suggestions or favorites? She gave us an Omaha Steak Cheesecake last year, so I need to reciprocate. Would send fruit, but she has teenaged boys who would prefer dessert, so I'm stuck, I think.

Yearly gift certificate

For niece and her husband. I was thinking Girl and the Goat or perhaps Picolo Sogno. I've done Topolobampo and Frontera, I think I did the Green Zebra last year. Are either of these comparable? What would I need to spend for dinner for 2? They like anything, ethnic or otherwise. Have done Indian, but could do it again, something new? Would like to come in under $125 but could go to $150, but that would be max. Thanks

Help! Need restaurant for 9:00 tomorrow night

We're picking up son and wife from the airport. Flight gets in at 7:30, but it always takes forever to get the bag, so I figured we'd finally see them at about 8:30, then a little while to get into the city. I looked at Meritage, Ulivo,, Tre Scalini, none are open on Sundays at 9:00. Any suggestions? DIL appetite little iffy (early pregnancy), but the rest of us will be starving. My problem with Open Table is that I didn't recognize the names of any of the restaurants that I was seeing. Need guidance. BYO or wine list, doesn't matter. Thanks.

Lambertville NJ area

We ate at Rouget the last week it was open in Newtown and they told us they hoped to be open in late October.

What do do with a whole bunch of green tomatoes ... other than frying them

Green tomato pickles!

Pastry or Breakfast in Langhorne, Trevose, Bensalem

An enthusiastic second for Fritz's Bakery. There's one next to the Sheraton, across from Sesame Place.

Marsilio's Kitchen, West Trenton

I just heard that Antonio's in West Trenton has been bought and re-opened as Marsilio's Kitchen (as in Marsilio's of Chambersburg). Anyone been yet?

Really Basic Chicken Curry Recipe?

You're right on course. Saute some onions (I've never used garlic, but why not?), add curry powder to bloom, then cut up chicken, stir and let chicken brown slightly (if it will), then add chicken broth (water if you don't have chicken broth) and cook til chicken is done. I sometimes added cubed potato or roughly chopped tomatoes to the mix. I learned this while living in Jamaica as a young, newly married, and inexperienced cook and still make it this way when in a hurry. Other vegetables can be added at your pleasure.

Rouget moving

Well, we had a very good dinner at Rouget last night. Crab cake held together with shrimp mousse and no bread filler was excellent. They are moving to the site of #9, opening in October and they will be staying BYO.

Rouget moving

Yes, that's what I heard. To Lambertville, because their rent went up so much. Hard to believe that Lambertville rents are lower than Newtown's. DH and I are joining friends there tomorrow. Sorry to see what has been a very decent restaurant leave the Newtown area.

Get there before it is impossible to get a table!

Sounds great. Where is it? Price range?

Any local corn in yet?

Shady Brook Farms between Newtown and Yardley have their own bicolor.

Where are the best bagels in the Bucks/Montgomery counties area?

I like RJ's in Yardley/Morrisville

visiting LA, need to give son a breather (from us) on 7/4 and celebrate 40th anniversary

Thanks.

visiting LA, need to give son a breather (from us) on 7/4 and celebrate 40th anniversary

So psyched. Called ahead to make sure they would be open on the 4th and when we arrived at 7:45 they were closed. Sigh. Had a not very memorable dinner at Versailles and will try Sadaf on Wednesday for a late lunch before going to catch the red-eye. Big disappointment, not the somewhat exotic/romantic dinner I'd hoped for, but at least it wasn't CPK which we did see was open. :-(

visiting LA, need to give son a breather (from us) on 7/4 and celebrate 40th anniversary

Point taken. We've decided to try Sadaf (Persian) in Encino--they are open, have wine, are a "sister" of Darya and seem to have good reviews in general, and we've never had Persian. But Tuesday night we're taking son and DIL to Agra Tandoori. The reviews made us salivate (probably also sweat a little, too since some of us like it hot). Thanks for your advice.

I just re-checked their website and they do have a full bar. Would you do Loteria over Saraf, Banu, or one of the other Mediterranean places mentioned here?

visiting LA, need to give son a breather (from us) on 7/4 and celebrate 40th anniversary

DH has relented Italian and French are definitely in the mix. Do want a glass of wine, so Loteria Grill (mmentioned below) doesn't seem to fit the bill.
