Drinks near Financial District?

Any suggestions for a place for drinks (3 adults) in/near Financial District area? My girlfriend suggested The Kitchen Bar and Girl (Broad St) and another friend suggested Les Halles (John St). I am not sure about either and would greatly welcome suggestions. Thank you

Why does my reheated Steel Cut Oats come out gloppy and congealed together?

I was thinking maybe I shouldn't be using milk when I reheat and maybe water would help it better to loosen up?

Why does my reheated Steel Cut Oats come out gloppy and congealed together?

Thanks. How long once the water comes to a boil should I let it simmer? Sorry if that is a dumb question.

How do you reheat it by steaming?

Why does my reheated Steel Cut Oats come out gloppy and congealed together?

I guess I must be doing something wrong/ I too prefer the texture chewier but my oats come out in big congealed chunks even after I microwave it. It is so thick I can stick my spoon in the bowl practicularly lift out the oats; even after I add milk and microwave it the clumps stay as a bunch of clumps. When reheated its a completely different texture compared to when it first comes out from the rice cooket. Really weird :(

Thanks for the response lulou. How is the texture when you reheat? Are the oats clumped together after you microwave it? Maybe I shouldnt be using the rice cooker and try it your way on the stove top.

Why does my reheated Steel Cut Oats come out gloppy and congealed together?

Hello All. I usually make a my steel cut oats in my rice cooker (1:3 ratio of oats and water) and generally have a couple of servings out of it. I have heard how oats reheat so well in the microwave but mine comes out all congealed together in small little gloppy chunks. I usually put a little milk before microwaving to hopefully loosen it up but it doesnt seem to work. The milk stays settled on the bottom of the heated bowl and the oats are still clumped together. What am I doing wrong? I use a 5 cup Zoji to cook it and the batch comes out perfect when I first make it but the reheated oats never look/taste the same as the original. Is this normal? How do you reheat your oats?

Zojirushi Rice Cooker NSZCC10 DISHWASHER SAFE?

I sometimes make steel cut oats or add some spices/herbs to my rice after it has done cooking (i.e. the cilantro rice recipe i found here on chowhound) so there are times I would prefer to put it in the dishwasher. I generally have room in my dishwasher since i just cook for one and like the ease of throwing everything in the DW. Probably because as Patticakes says it hides it and I can walk away from my kitchen feeling everything is put away and clean and the dishwasher is working away. (I also dont have a dishrack as I have very limited counter space so i really dont have any place to put things to dry).

Zojirushi Rice Cooker NSZCC10 DISHWASHER SAFE?

So I brought the 5.5 Nuerro Fuzzy Zoji rice cooker based on all the reccomendations of you Chowhounds. I have just one question regarding the rice cooker insert...is it dishwasher proof? I didnt see anything about whether or not I could put it in the dishwasher in the manual just to hand wash it......Whats your advice/experience? TIA

14th street near W4th Recs?

We are meeting a friend (we are all coming from NJ) in the city for lunch and some drinks on Weds. One of the ladies of the group (there will be three of us alltogether) suggested DOJA but I have read mixed reviews recently (so-so food and bad service). Can anyone suggest CHEAP alternatives in that area that three ladies would be happy with? There are no dietary or health limitations so as long as its cheap and friendly that would be great. Thanks in advance for the help.

French Door, Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator - New Owners, Please Post

Have to chime in on another SEARS disaster buying experience. Purchased a KENMORE ELITE TRIO BOTTOM FREEZER and it turns out it had a bad compressor (temp ran hot, noisy, frost in freezer, etc) after 2 weeks of use. Sears picked it up and now 8 weeks later I still have not properly been credited the money I paid. I will never buy from SEARS again. Sad as I had brought all my appliances from SEARS a couple of years ago for my new house and would say without exaggeration we were truly loyal Sears customers I will never deal with them again after this red tape chaos.

Corned Beef Brisket on Grill / BBQ?

I wanted to use my gas grill to cook a corned beef brisket I had frozen in my freezer. Does anyone have any advice/experience with this? Can it be done with successful results? I was looking to prepare it as some type of BBQ brisket thing rather than making corned beef brisket and cabbage...I took it out from my freezer because I am emptying my freezer and am trying to be frugal as money is tight and want to be as creative as possible. Thank you all very much.

any way to fix pancakes that are mushy in the middle?

Thank you both for your thoughts. I suspected starting over was going to be the right way to go. I guess I am just trying to be frugal as I used nuts, whole wheat flour and oatmeal in the batter and I agree it isnt a crazy $$$ failure I was hoping to save them somehow. Thanks again

any way to fix pancakes that are mushy in the middle?

Hi All. I attempted to make a batch of whole wheat and oatmeal pancakes this morning and having making about a dozen of them when I sat down to taste them I saw they all had this mushy txture in the middle. The outsides are brown and I had flipped them when the bubbles started forming like the instructions stated so I thought they were cooked through.

So the question is is there any way to fix them now they are techinically "cooked" and all ready done? I suspect putting them back on the skillet now wont cook them more or will it? Also is microwaving them an option if I freeze them now and plan to eat them later?

Thanks for any advice. I really dont want to waste all those pancakes. :(

PYREX alternatives?

Hi All. So the recent thread regarding Pyrex exploding has got me paranoid. I am looking ffor alternatives to use when baking in the oven. I generally use Pyrex as it is convenient when I marinate some chicken breast or something for dinner. I pour the marinade on, cover and refrigerate. When I need to cook it, I generally take it out as the oven is preheating and stick the whole thing in the oven. Now I am thinking that isnt too smart to do. So what do Chowhounds use instead of Pyrex?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Baratza Maestro Plus Burr Grinder

So I just brought a Baratza Maestro Plus Burr Grinder based on the recs on this board. Now that I have it out of the box I dont have a clue how to use it. The "manual" the came with it is really minimal to say the least. Anyway can someone PLEASE help me figure this out?

So far I understand the beans go in the plastic hopper on top but I have a couple of other questions:
1: Do I just put the amount of beans I plan on using for the pot (actually french press) OR can I fill up the hopper (it says it can hold up to a half a pound of beans)...and then somehow stop it after it grinds enough beans for that single use? Does that make any sense?

Which then leads to my next questions...

2. What is the ourpose of the timer on the side? How do I know how long to set the timer for? I I set the grind control on the base of the hopper for 35 (the recommended setting fro french press according to the manual), And I figurred out the timer is essentially the "ON" button but how long should I be grinding enough beans say for 2 cups of coffee for a french press?

And finally is the pulse button on the front just for if I wanted to make expresso?

Thank you all for bearing with me and reading all this confusing mess. I really appreciate all the support and knowledge you guys all have.

FRUIT SALSAS? HOW LONG....

Hi everyone. I have seen fruit salsa recipes that tell you to make the recipe "several hours ahead" of time I am guessing to let the flavors meld ...My question is how long is too long for a salsa to sit? If I wanted to eat it tomorrow is 24 hours too long or is it best say letting it sit for 4 or 5 hours the most before eating? Thanks again for all your thoughts.

Easy to eat foods for entertaining...

Hi All. I am looking for suggestions for some foods/snacks/appetitizers that would be "easy" to eat for entertaining guests. Here is the scenario: We are having another couple over as a sort of "Get to know each other" first time meeting. We have chatted casually previously in passing but this is the first time they will be over our house (likewise we have never been over their home). The setting will be our deck and I suspect it will be a late afternoon visit (after lunch but before dinner). I want to put out some snacks /resfreshments but am thinking dips like salsa but be too messy and make people feel self conscious? Am I over thinking this? Should I stick to pretzels and nuts? Do you chowhounds have any great suggestions? Thanks all!!!

BBQ Ribs....Can I recook cooked ribs?

So I made some ribs the other night and while they were good they werent "falling off the bone tender" the way we usually like them...I have some left overs and today as I have some time to cook them some more I was wondering if I could put them back on the grill and cook them long and slow for a while so they get tender(er)? Any thoughts? Will they get better this way?

Water Cooler / Dispenser? [Moved from Not About Food board]

Thanks for all your input. I was actually thinking of using this in our home office which is no where near an actual water source/sink. That is why i need a free standing water cooler. I have had previous experience with water coolers where the water comes out tasting like plastic so I was just looking for recommendations for a cooler I can buy that doesnt have that off taste.

Water Cooler / Dispenser? [Moved from Not About Food board]

Hi All. I am looking into buying a water cooler / water dispenser. The kind that you put a 5 gallon jug of water on top and hot/cold water is dispensed. I hear alot of stories about certain brands which impart a plastic / burnt taste in the water the first couple of days/weeks/months. Does any one have ay experience or recommendations? Thank you in advance.
