Best cookies in Toronto

I had the mason jar cheesecake (caramel, not sure if the topping changes) and I did find it too sweet. It was also pretty liquidy in the centre (not sure if that's how it's supposed to be).

I loooove the brownies and liked the cookie. I will give the macaroons and the mousse some time in my spotlight next (what can I say, I walk past there every day).

Hipster restaurants?

I think it's pretty normal for peer groups to have similar values and to socialize together. I doubt most hipsters find it important to be different from their own friends.

Hipster restaurants?

This article is hipster-trolling for page hits. It could have just been a complaint about modern dining experiences, but that's been done a million times before, so. I'm so tired of the term being used as a blanket insult. It's not just lazy and condescending, it's narrow-minded and irrelevant to the discussion. It seems to me that it should be obvious that it is offensive to assume someone's taste in restaurants, or ability to prepare great food--or their acceptance of you as a patron!--on how many tattoos they have or what bands they like.

I need NY style pizza.

In case you get no other suggestions...there's a new place on Queen St. W called North of Brooklyn that does garlic knots and a pizza that may suit you...http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/862960

I don't think it's like John's on Bleeker but you can read the other thread for details.

Two recipes I can't track down

So... just to be certain... it wasn't the cabbage, potato, and leek soup in the cabbage feature in March?

Sweet potato salad

I usually eat it at room temperature where the flavours are a bit better but I have done cold and it's still ok (leftovers right from the fridge). I kind of like cold roasted sweet potatoes though!

Sweet potato salad

My version is a little sweet, almost a dessert really, but I love it... roasted sweet potato, dried cranberries, chopped rosemary, chevre, pepitas, black pepper, and an olive oil and maple syrup (just a tiny bit) dressing.

Potato Chip Afficionado

I miss those O'Grady's cheddar chips too. Ruffles came out with a thick-cut cheddar chip awhile ago (not sure if it's still around or not) but it didn't compare with the memory of the O'Grady's.

Potato salad secrets?

My "secret" ingredients are finely diced caramelized onion (rather than raw), lots of good crispy bacon, and chives to garnish.

Where to buy *flour* based tortilla chips?

Not located in Texas, but I do know of a brand of fried flour tortilla chips:

http://www.gringojacks.com/Chips.html

They were available here in Toronto for awhile so they might be somewhere there as well, but you can, at least, order them online.

I found a little extra cooked bacon crumbled in fixes the PC bacon marmelade into something quite delicious if you're so inclined.

Italian Food magazines

If you're looking for something central there is (was? it's been awhile) a place in the Chin building on College St. near Grace that has a selection of Italian magazines. Presse Internazionale I think? I'm sure I've bought Cucina (in Italian) there.

Toronto with young children ???

The blue chip truck parked outside of city hall on Queen is about 8 small blocks away from there (just east of York St.) and has satisfying straight-ahead poutine if the weather is nice and you don't mind eating outside. I don't know if their fries are crisp though.

Buttercream Icing Cakes - Bakery

My favourite sweet american-style iced cake in Toronto is still at Yummy Stuff on Queen W. I am more familiar with their chocolate buttercream (which I love) but they sell cupcakes as well if you wanted to take a test drive.

I also love PG but as mentioned they don't do full cakes.

Things that don't taste like you expected they would...

I loooooved arugula the first time I had it because it was peppery and bitter, but the try after that just tasted like unpleasant lettuce. I think the taste of arugula changes a LOT from bunch to bunch. I read somewhere that the pepperiness increases the later you harvest it.

I don't think issue #3 is due in stores until March 13th so it's still nice + early yet. I imagine they are doing everything they can to avoid the delivery problems for subscribers they experienced for issue #2.

"Restaurants" Database To Be Eliminated

The effort you and others on the Ontario board put into linking restaurants in threads is a big reason I find CH so helpful--thank you. With a number of restaurants being a pain to Google (because of generic names, for example) this provides a way to find out what else has been said about a particular place and really make the most of the Chowhound discussions.

Adults that have been "sheltered" from cooking?

I have a friend's father who feeds himself similarly. One thing that we managed to add to his repertoire (because upping the veg intake was a must and salads were out of the question) was a simple one-pan stir-fry. We bought him a wok, oil, and low-sodium soy sauce. Over the course of a weekend my friend (also a male, I think this helped) took him to the grocery store with a list of ingredients (things that were already familiar to him) and showed him how to make three simple dishes. We stocked his freezer with frozen vegetables and I am pretty sure he does use the wok at least once a week now. We are so proud :)
