"Best Of"
How about Mumfords, located in Tinton Falls, NJ.

I have heard very postive reviews of their food and service.
Hot & Sweaty at Jameson's Neptune
Nice to see a local place receiving such positive feedback. I've been to Jameson's a few times. I went around lunch and each time the female counter people were less than friendly. The food seems consistent in taste but on occasion they run out of items-- which is a disappointment when I'm craving collards and don't feel like cooking them. Their portion sizes are plentiful making their food a nice value. Anyone tried "Geneva's" on Atkins Ave in Neptune? It's another local soul food standby. I'm hoping someone will offer really good soul food desserts in Monmouth/Ocean County. My people are from Kentucky and they know how to throw down on desserts. Happy eating !!
Mr. Tod's Pie Factory: Sweet Potato Pie
Three days before Thanksgiving '07, I went to Mr. Tod's Pie Factory in Somerset, NJ. www.whybake.com. The place was packed with customers. I heard people line up outside to pick up holiday pie orders the day before Thanksgiving. Their specialty is Sweet Potato Pie which my hubby said was the best he tasted. We've been back a few times since November and the pies seem to be consistently good. They also make a good Pecan Pie. I had the apple pie; but wasn't crazy about the spices. The crust is a butter crust, so it's not flaky and thick. There was copious apples in the apple pie but the thin crust did not support such a densely filled pie. Anyway, this small bakery seems to be very popular. I found it's best to call and order your pie or call to see if they have the pie you want. If you go around holiday times, order early and pick up early--otherwise you'll wait in a long line.
They also have cheesecake and fruit cobblers.

Baltimore Cupcake Tour (Cakelove & BCC)
I was recently in DC and happily preordered two cakes from CakeLove. I first read about CakeLove in 2003 but never had an occasion to be in the DC area. Once there the cupcakes and other pastries were tempting so I ended up spending $118.00 on "goodies". Ate about 1/4, shared 1/4 and trashed 1/2. I did not like the icing. While its texture is beautiful; it's buttery rather than a sweet fluffy icing. The cake was OK but must be at room temperature otherwise too dry. The lemon on the coconut cake was soooo yummy !!! The toasted coconut flakes were good quality and delicious. I just couldn't get past a mouthful of butter icing. I'm happy Warren Brown's found his niche--people who like pastries and cakes that aren't sweet. It's not my palette.
