Uses for dried Cherries (not just baked goods)
I tried putting about 2 cups in a half bottle of cheap bourbon for 2 weeks and used it to make Manhattans, a tiny bit of sweet and dry vermouth is all you need for Perfect Manhattans and use the dried cherries for garnish not the maraschinos. It would be better with better bourbon and a longer soak. Try with any dried fruit and neutral booze.
Fav IPAs?
"Dogfishhead 90 min. Imperial IPA" Full bodied, well balanced malt forward beer and crisp not overpowering hop character. Nice strong beer 9% kept in check by the full body. Slight fruit notes like apricot and bananas from the yeast and hops and probably good with spicy, curry, sushi or another Dogfishhead 90 min. Imperial IPA. Highly recomended. Only one dislike...Six pack price for only 4 12oz. bottles.
Chipotle Mexican Grill
What do I like about Chipotle? Taste of the chicken and carnitas, corn salsa is a must, always loads of sour cream, guacomole is one of the best and consitant (made twice daily), use of fresh ingredients, being able to see the cooks cooking, grilling, and braising the meat, interior design of restaurant.
Things I dislike...portions size, inconsistant wrapped burritos (pools of one ingredient here and there) sometimes unpleasant service staff, Chips are way too salty!!! how do they get the salt to stick? it's crazy!
5 guys? Is it really that good?
I liked the burger, fires, and experince very much. I do not recomend getting the regular (double patty) burger, instead get the smaller of the two. I also do not recomend the "5 guys style" with mushrooms. The mushrooms taste like they came from can..no bueno. I would get the burger with what ever toppings you like to put on your hamburger you will enjoy it more! I like mayo mustard ketchup onions lettuce pickles.
Extra charge for rocks or neat
I think with extra charge is for a bigger pour. Rocks and neat pours should get an extra count from the bar tender while they pour it. This is in comparison to a highball which contains a mixer like vodka soda, or bourbon and coke. Bartenders??? Scotch drinkers???
Beer Pairing with Reuben Sandwiches?
There are a lot of great points here. I agree with Josh on a lot of these food/beer pairings. I have another idea. Try a malty porter. I believe the higher alcohol (fat dissolver) will better clear the palate. As long as you stay away from a real dark roast and hops I think this would be a great pair.
Going out on a limb here...DIPA paired with Haagen-dazs Dulce de Leche ice cream. Polar opposites of sweetness and bitternes. Also the fat from the ice cream blocks some of the intense bitter hops. I supposed in a way the medium roast will compliment this caramel ice cream well. Just a thought.
Recommendations?
Reading this is making me thirsty. If you wanted to try a different Sam Adams product I would recommend the Boston Ale. In parts of the US it may be less available, however I think it is right up you ally. It is a well balanced beer with a malt forward begging which smoothly develops slight caramel and toffee notes and gently finishing with a bit of hops. This ale is far less hoppy then it's more popular brother the Lager. My girlfriend's favorite beer is Newcastle and she tried this beer today and loves it!
Happy drinking!
a question about making a Black and Tan with Bass Ale and Guinness
Thanks for the tip on the free brolly! Make sure you use pub cans or the bottles of Guinness carbonated with nitrous (widgets). I went through a six pack of each one time trying to get it right but I was using Guinness that is pumped full of CO2.
Charlotte: 2nd Penguin location?
Alley Cat, It's a new live music scene and bar that serves food from the Penguin Grill. They don't have the whole menu but all the staples are there...burgers, dogs, fried pickles, ect. I think they stop serving food at like 11:00.
