Puzzle: Cable Car Dim Sum w/ Kids Under 90 mins
We have family in town Saturday and they are excited about going to Dim Sum around 11am. They aren't the adventurous type but are being awesome by breaking out and trying something "new." They want their chowhound hosts to show them a good SF time... so the pressure is on.
The puzzle is that we only really have 90 mins before we have to head out to afternoon plans.
So where the heck do you take a 6 adults and 3 kids to dim sum close to the cable car around 11am without bumping into a line or wait.
Is this unrealistic?
Does anybody take reservations?
Thanks for the tips in advance.

5 Meals 2 Days in Pasadena Area (Best of...)
We're based in SF and have lived in numerous places around the world. We're looking for a classic L.A. experience (or better yet a classic Pasadena experience if there is one). More taste than noise. More long conversation than drinks. Again, more walking than driving.
What's the scoop with South Pasadena?

Thanks man... great post.. you answered our question - what defines the Pasadena "area"
South Pas, Eagle Rock, Arcadia, Alhambra, San Gabriel...really, the entire San Gabriel Valley.
This gives us more to search.
Thanks
5 Meals 2 Days in Pasadena Area (Best of...)
We're traveling to Pasadena for a quick weekend trip and want to eat well.
We want to feel and taste LA.
After a search on Chowhound there seems to be a dearth of posts on Pasadena (and area). Lots of discussion about a particular food but no Best of Pasadena area.
We have 2 days and 5 meals (2 dinners, a breakfast and a lunch). We don't want to spend tons of time in the car but are more than willing to get out of Old Town.
NO CPK OR Cheesedate Factory. No need to break the bank either, but can be included in the mix. All types of food would be considered.
Many folks suggest South Pasadena? What's the scoop on that?
SO what would you suggest if you were visiting the Pasadena area?
Thanks!
New to Berkeley/Rockridge - Nice Summer Dinner Spot?
I'm new to the Berkeley/RockRidge area and an old friend is in town. I want to take him to a nice spot that isn't stuffy and concept upscale but is very good and very comfortable. Like a superb French bistro or a one of a kind non-chain.
I'm going blind and would love a suggest or two.
Tresca vs. Prezza ?
I've heard that Prezza is louder and more about "chops" and big cuts of meat. What about Carmen?
Or skip that and go to Salts for the sure thing food and AMAZING service, closer to home?
Best Island in Hawaii for Food?
No one has mentioned Kauai, now the focus of our trip. I'm also looking to take a cooking class on Kauai.
Best Island in Hawaii for Food?
Which Island is the best for a chowhound? And WHY?
If you had 10 days in Hawaii and only wanted to spend it on one Island, but do a 2/3 island hop for food, what two islands would you pick?
Fancy Lunch for Special Birthday, Weekday (Downtown or Cambridge)
Eastern Standard is a solid rec... but a bit far from downtown... I'm trying to think of a similar spot closer in...the idea is that we can bumble around the shops, Garden, etc before or after...
Fancy Lunch for Special Birthday, Weekday (Downtown or Cambridge)
I'm treating a family member that lives in rural New Hampshire to a birthday brunch or lunch, during the week.
I'm looking for something downtown or Cambridge. A place that isn't too heavy on the business crowd but is sophisticated, where we can take our time and enjoy the space.
They are a parent of small kids so one of the wonderful aspects I'm looking for is an adult place where they feel far away from the stresses of family management.
They have great food taste, have lived in big metro areas so there is no concern for the "suburb factor"
Ideas?
Old School and Historical SF Locale
We're in SF for a day and wanted to break up our typical long strolls around the city with a classic, historical place for a drink and food. Could be lunch, could be dinner, could be something in between (tea, late lunch).
We could land a comfortable seat or table. There might be a fireplace. We can take our time.
It has to be unique to San Francisco.
It could be in a hotel. Or not.
It could be old school with lots of dark wood. Or not.
It could be rustic and West coast. Or not.
Just classic, comfortable and cozy with great drinks and food.
Any suggestions?
Dressing up Brussels Sprouts, but no meat or dairy
Garlic, Breadcrumbs, Lemon Juice
- Score
- Boil for 10 minutes, drain
- In pan, mix oil, garlic, sprouts
- Add lemon juice and breadcrumbs
- when brown they're ready
Oh so good
Cape scallops are in, goodbye Fresh Pond Seafood
Fishmonger on Huron Ave = high prices, limited selection, poor service. Skip it. Sad to hear about Fresh Pond seafood. We loved picking up dinner after a walk around the pond.
I too am very curious as to why.
Wedding Catering: Mexican in Sonoma!
Can't have a real California Wedding without wonderful Mexican food... any great suggestions on caterers in Sonoma County?
Where can you buy Cracker Jacks in Cambridge/Somerville/Boston?
I found them at Star. Yes, state of affairs is sad. Great box but one or two peanuts.
Cape Cod 3: Best Bar to Enjoy Dinner (a la Chez Henri, Blue Room, Christopher's or the like)
The Eastham, Welfeet, Orleans areas. One night we're going to Abba, so that is covered.
Where can you buy Cracker Jacks in Cambridge/Somerville/Boston?
Thank you. I'm specifically looking for the boxes. The bags just won't do.
Cape Cod 3: Best Bar to Enjoy Dinner (a la Chez Henri, Blue Room, Christopher's or the like)
Great. The folks at Abba suggested the bar at Wicked Oyster too.
Cast Iron KOs Calaphon 1
We've seasoned ours by bringing it camping. So the food smells like a camp fire for a week or so....
Julie & Julia
Many agree with you. In the end is was/is just a media marketing play. Ask for your money back. It was false advertising ;)
Where can you buy Cracker Jacks in Cambridge/Somerville/Boston?
Anybody have any idea where I can buy a box of cracker jacks. I'm surprise they are so hard to find.
Nothing in Harvard Square including Hidden Sweets.
Cape Cod 3: Best Bar to Enjoy Dinner (a la Chez Henri, Blue Room, Christopher's or the like)
The next Cape Cod question...
Are there any wonderful, higher to mid priced, places that are great to eat at the bar? Comfortable, paced, quality.
dim sum
Bad Service is defined differently with Dim Sum
- does the cart come to you
- do they show you all the options
- do one of three servers smile
- do they bring out various options
Went to China Pearl on Saturday. It was fab!
Captain Linnell's in Orleans (Cheesy & Old School or Classic & A Sure Thing?)
Thanks for the link. Seems like you touched on what we're looking for... how about for the second night. Hip, good, but a bit less pricey?
Captain Linnell's in Orleans (Cheesy & Old School or Classic & A Sure Thing?)
The Captain comes highly recommended but reviewing their website it looks a bit old school. Are there any other hip, mid- top - range places that are romantic?
Alternatively, is there something fun and more lively, but has great food.
Yes, I know the off season has started, so any tips are greatly appreciated.
dim sum
If we show up at 9:30am we will miss the crowds but will the selection be poor?
Is this a good sum up of Hei La Moon?
- freshest, best quality
- low grease
- great range of options
- terrible service
CCC
- best service
- average food
China Pearl
- Hit or miss on food
- Hit or miss on service
Imperial
- great service
- if you sit in the wrong place you'll never get a cart
best sandwich spot in Boston

Challah in the Boston Area
Remember last year when High Rise sold dozens of uncooked (doughy in the middle) Challah. It ruined our holiday and many others. I think they had egg on their face, no pun intended. This year they were extra careful I assume.
Darwin's: Is it just another High (Price) Rise?
You say it so well.
Some people like the bad service on the side. I don't. Just a pickle thank you.
