Scarpetta...disappointing

My friend made a res and what can I say? It was very, very good. Liked the bread with the ham baked into it; the chilled pea soup with crabmeat was terrific and friend loved the salmon tartare. We both had pastas: I had the tortoni which was surprisingly light and she had a linguini (I think) with lamb ragu and peas that rocked. I think the apps are overpriced but the food really impressed me.

Help my dad love the West Village as much as I do

You might also try Scarpetta, if you're set on Italian. It's on W 14th near 9th and recently opened with Scott Conant as chef. Ate there the other night and it was delicious; apps are too pricey but main courses are very yummy. If you're open to other kinds of food we like Snack on Bedford and Morton, where the food is greek and we've taken lots of out-of-town guests. Market Table is so good if you can get in. Good luck!

Sonoma in April! Good lunch suggestions?

Thank you all again...we can't wait to get there. Made reservations to tour the Cowgirl Creamery on Friday; plan to visit Geyserville and Healdsburg thanks to you; may break up trip by staying Wed nite in Mendocino (at Joshua Grindle with dinner at Cafe Beaujolais--anyone?)...and in general just having a grand time around the area. Your reports and links have been incredibly helpful in planning the trip. Go, chowhounds!

Sonoma in April! Good lunch suggestions?

Thank you all so much for your mouthwatering suggestions! I will give you a full report upon return and please know that I will check in here right up until we leave on Friday if anyone else has one more place that you think we should try. Yum!

Sonoma in April! Good lunch suggestions?

Thanks so much, everyone! I'm all in favor of shorter trips, especially to all these beautiful sounding places (dyed-in-the-wool new yorker, so glad you all know about these!). Any restaurants in Bodega Bay you especially like or favorites in the Russian River Valley? We're already planning to go to West Marin/Point Reyes as suggested!

Sonoma in April! Good lunch suggestions?

I am thrilled to say that we will be staying in a cottage in Sonoma for the first week of April (and I recommend vrbo.com to all those who are inspired to do the same). We will be taking day trips all the way up to Mendocino and closer by. Do chowhounds have some good ideas for places we can stop for lunch? Already plan to have dinner locally at the Girl and the Fig and may return to the Jimtown Store outside Healdsburg, but we are open to any and all suggestions. Also, what day(s) of the week is the Sonoma and Healdsburg farmer's markets? Eagerly awaiting your suggestions, with thanks!

looking for best whitefish salad in the city - is it Murrays?

Zabar's is very good but I will take Russ & Daughters any day; Citarella's is worth a try, too.

Sat/Sun brunch in West Village for 5or6

Perry Street has a very nice prix-fixe for brunch and it's a beautiful restaurant. Also Little Owl has a wonderful Sunday brunch and if you can get in it's definitely a treat.

West Village recommendations?

Little Owl has a wonderful brunch. For small and friendly (and reasonable) I like Petite Abeille on Hudson near Barrow. Two spanish places near you: El Cid on 15th between 8 and 9 Avenue (for tapas and sangria only) and El Faro on Greenwich as others have mentioned. For exquisite croissants try Claude's Patisserie on West 4th between 6th and 7th. Another sweet place without much fanfare is Jarnac, on Washington and W. 12th.

The old Grange Hall the new 'Commerce'

I sincerely hope that they will put a fabulous chicken dish (not for sharing) and an unusual burger on the menu; adjust prices; add a vegetarian entree (not fish); and succeed. I love our neighborhood restaurants and would like to support this one.
