Yum Cha Cafe Opens Up In Chinatown

My guess is they are making it themselves because they have numerous employees hanging around outside eating rice during their breaks. Almost all of them look like recent immigrants too. Maybe that is key to good taste, cheap labor, and a "C" Health Rating. I believe Yum Cha opened up late last year, though I do not remember exactly when.

CHOW MEIN - not Lo Mein!!

I think the confusion is due to companies like long-gone Chung King who used to have this canned Chicken Chow Mein product in supermarkets. It was actually 2 cans taped together. First can had chop suey (which was mostly el-cheapo bean sprouts). Second can contain deep-fried pieces of noodles that you served on the side or on top.

NBC Seafood Open Or Closed During Shopping Center Remodeling?

I already read that article a few days ago. My impression has always been that the "remodeling" was mandatory due to building codes/safety reasons, rather than voluntarily for economic purposes.

NBC Seafood Open Or Closed During Shopping Center Remodeling?

Can somebody remind me why the are "remodeling"? I seem to remember something about part of the building collapsing and unstable ground.

Low Price Leader Opens In Monterey Park

Low Price Leader??? Sounds like a place tailor-made to retirees who play Mahjong all day & are too lazy to cook. Maybe I should tell them about this new place? Nah, they probably already tried it and know if it is worth it or not.

New Dim Sum Restaurant Opening Friday in Chinatown

The freebie Downtown News has a 10% off your entire order for Master Chef. So if you go there, you might as well get the paper & save a couple of bucks. There is probably a newstand within site of the restaurant.

As far as parking goes, there usually is not too many people in Chinatown so finding a space on the street is not uncommon.

Does anybody know why Plum Tree Inn moved in the first place? Was there a big rent increase or something? No idea what their financials looked liked before the moved, but I know that whenever I pass their place nowadays, the lot is competely empty. How can Plum Tree Inn afford to stay in business when there is zero business on weekends during lunch hour? Not sure, but I suspect their dinner business is not that much better.

Opinions on Sam Woo's

From my understanding, Sam Woo's is not a chain run by a single entity. Instead, there was an original Sam Woo's that must have been decent. Then that owner allowed his kids, relatives, or whomever to open restaurants under the same name. Who knows? Maybe the guy did not trademark his name, or did not want to go through the legal process to protect it. Anyway, the quality, menu, price, etc.. at one location therefore has no bearing compared to another location with the same name.

Best Seafood Market in LA?

Hong Kong Market's fish section is overpriced, but more importantly it does not look clean. I mean they put fish on display of ice which is common. However, the ice looks dirty. Not sure if it is the display case itself or what, but it sure does not make the seafood appealing at all.

Early Dinner with an 8yo in Chinatown

Isn't Family Pastry next to the live poultry place? If so, the smell around there is not the most pleasant for an 8yr old. An alternative for dim sum might be the place next to the Senior Citizen's Center which is about 600 N Broadway. From what I understand, the owners of that place also have a branch next to Shun Fat Supermarket in Monterey Park. Price there is reasonable & they did remodel recently, so the seats are fairly new. Not sure what time they close though. Lots of places close around 6pm in Chinatown. Of course, you could always go there first and takeout.

If you stay past 6pm/closing time, it is probably better to go to a sit-down establishment. There is a place on Broadway & Alpine that is called Hong Kong something, but used to be a Sam Woo. Anyway, that place is very casual and opens late. You do not need to order anything exotic. I'm sure the child would not mine something char-siu fried rice, beef chow mein, egg rolls, and/or some scrambled egg dish.
