Fried Tofu

not exactly what you're looking for, but I HIGHLY recommend dry frying tofu:

you get crispy tofu that's ready to soak up a marinade, without any oil, splatter, or added fat from frying.

Chicago Vegetarian-Friendly Gift Certificate Ideas for Wedding Gift?

they could get two+ dinners at mana out of that. it's veggie, but i've never had a meat eating friend complain about going there, it's fantastic and one of the most underrated places in the city in my mind.

or lula, very veggie friendly, but with high quality meat products too. i'd say you could get two nice meals with wine for 200, or one nice meal with great wine for 150.

Looking for a pizza place that can host a party of 50 people

We had our rehearsal dinner a few years ago at ginos in streeterville, I think we had 75 people? worked out very well and was very reasonable

Best Upscale-ish Mexican in San Diego Area?

Hi,
I've searched the threads, but it's hard for me to discern which are nice restaurants and which are more hole in the walle.
Although I grew up in San Diego, it's been a long time since I've been in town, so I don't know restaurants anymore. I'm looking for a good place where I can go with my whole family for my mom's 65th birthday. The whole family is coming in, and she's craving Mexican, but insists there is nothing good in town and just wants to bring in Don Carlos (which I love, so I wouldn't complain too much).
Anyways, she lives in La Jolla, so I'd love any recommendations for good, non hole in the wall places in San Diego area (i.e. escondido is too far), where ten people, including a 90+ year old grandmother, would enjoy eating.
Thanks!
David

First Trip To Boka

the menu has changed a bit since I was last there, but I highly recommend the mac and cheese with edamame. I know it sounds odd, but we brought our 6 year old sister with us when we last went as she was visiting with her parents, and she wanted it for dinner. We each had a bite, and it was so good we ordered two more for our table of 5 adults!
My wife had the Bartlett pear salad, it was amazing. Actually, come to think of, all of the salads were great!
Overall, one of our two most favorite upscale casual restaurants in the city!
enjoy!!

Best gnocchi in Chicago?

So, just to update, we went to Sapori Trattoria on Halsted the other night for dinner.
We ordered their gnocchi with their rigatoni sauce.
At first, i was not impressed at all, tasted like bad store bought (the sauce was fantastic though). But, after letting it sit for a few mins, it got pretty good, although not great.
Now, when I ate the leftovers the next day, I heated it back up and it was amazing: perfect texture and consistency. Maybe it was undercooked originally? They were swamped, so maybe they rushed it? But those leftovers were great.
We're going to try Fornellos on Irving Park tonight, so I'll report back.
I really want to get up to Pasta Del art though..

Best gnocchi in Chicago?

hmm, sounds good too.
My favorite gnocchi ever was a goat cheese one in Boston (Giacomos in the South End (not the North End version))

Best gnocchi in Chicago?

ooh, didn't realize that. The one I had was with mushrooms in a butter sauce, very tasty, but the butter and oil were too much. I'll try to get back there soon and give another gander. Thanks!!

Best gnocchi in Chicago?

Hi all,
so, I'm curious as to everyone's favorite gnocchi here in Chicago. I've been here almost three years now, and I still haven't found anything to write home about.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
David
