First visit to San Diego! Where to eat?!
JRDN Restaurant
Azul
Marine Room
The Linkery
Bertrand at Mr. A’s
Hacienda De Vega
Island Prime
Costa Brava PB Quick Report
I also really like this place, especially the happy hour. 4 to 7, every night of the week. They have a ½ off tapa menu and the sangria is ½ price as well…great deal in PB.
21st Birthday brunch-SD
“Any ideas on a fun restaurant.”
I may be out of line, but when I think of fun restaurants, Cavaillon, Cafe Chloe, and Park House Eatery are not at the top of my list. I would recommend Baja Betty’s for a fun afternoon brunch. Betty’s has a strange way of making a birthday goofy and special…in their own way.
Tequila tasting in SoCal?
Baja Betty's in Hillcrest. They have over 100 selections. They also have a tasting club once a month on Saturday...not sure which one.
Bud's Louisiana Cafe reopens (San Diego)
Great news Kirk! I need to get over for their Cup'a-Cup'a-Cup'a.
A guilty pleasure frustrated (thankfully?) in san diego
Hey Jim,
I'm not sure of the Texas-style chicken-fried steak, but I recently had the Fried Filet Medallions at Vigilucci’s La Jolla and it was quite a tasty dish!
A horrible experience at Kafe Yen in Pacific Beach
After eating multiple meals at Kafé Yen, the cucumber-flavored water was the complaint I had about the food or service.
Old School Restaurant in San Diego
I think Saska change when they started focusing on sushi…they went away what made the place special in the first place; steaks.
I also agree with Bully's East, SD Chicken Pie Shop, Hob Nob, and Rudfords.
Mezcal at El Agave SD
Awhile back DiningDiva reported there were flights of Mezcal at El Agave, so I when there to try a few. There was only one available and I had no reason to remember the name because it was quite expensive and I did not care for the taste.
The bartender picked out the Mole for me because I asked him what was best. The chicken was very dry. The sauce was good, but I had better Mole at Super Cocina for a fraction of the price.
New to Pacific Beach. Where should I eat?
Captain Jack gave many good recommendations; I would include a few others:
Marino’s on Ingraham Street - Mom and Pop place, my favorite Italian in San Diego.
Cass Street Bar & Grill - Great food and also a local hangout
Firehouse Café – Recently remodeled, good food and a mixed crowd
Ramiro's – Fast-food Mexican, the chicken burrito!
Mezcal at El Agave SD
I went to El Agave about five months ago because some of my Mexican students recommended the Mezcal and the Mole. Without asking the price, I ordered both. Both turned out to be over 20 bucks and both were disappointing.
Different taste buds, I guess.
Italian San Diego
I second Marino’s in PB (very kid friendly...the young granddaughter helps Grandmama Marino. You might also try Mama Mia’s in PB. Both are family owned and operated.
Boomerangs in SD - Gourmet Burgers?
Here is a thread with the location:
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/393846
I'm with you Cathy, but I only gave the place two chances. The second time was better, but not good enough for their prices.
Best Hamburger in San Diego?
Yes, it is the same place. I never had the burgers at Fashion Valley. This new place is in a strange location, it is on Voltaire, but quite inland. They had a great choice of toppings and the burgers came out just as we asked.
Best Hamburger in San Diego?
To answer your question stevuchan, yes my son and I went on a burger run for over two+ months (one week at a time). We both thought the burgers at High Dive were good. Here is the rundown of the other places:
Lucky Bucks – took way too long and burgers were overcooked and dry
Boomerangs – second try to be fair, but still not worth the time and money
O’Hungrys – We both thought the burgers were good
Blueberry Hill – Pleasant surprise in OB, very good burgers and toppings, only complaint was the place was too well lit
Rockys – Good burgers, rude staff
Islands – Chain, but good burgers!
Boll Weevil – Why is this place still in business?
Tiolis Crazy Burger – Good variety and good burgers
Hodads – Still our favorite of the bunch!
Are there Dog-Friendly restaurants in San Diego?
That would be Gulf Coast Grill...good food there! My problem would be drinking too much champagne and forgetting about the dog.
Thai in San Diego?
Considering every one and their mother that conduct “reviews” on YELP, I’m sure the reviews are great. I ate there once, and thought the food was average at best.
Sunday Brunch/Lunch Spot (San Diego)
Cavaillon does have a wonderful brunch, but it is in the middle of nowhere. JRDN has a really good brunch and the beach is a nice place to walk off the meal.
San Diego - where are the best biscuits?
Estocastica, You can find sweet tea and fried okra at Bonnie Jean's Soul Food Cafe on 54th.
San Diego - where are the best biscuits?
I’m also not a fan of the hard & tasteless biscuits at Hash House. Their only purpose is to hold that tree that comes with the meal.
My favorite in the area are the Gouda biscuits & seafood gravy at Savory in North County. I also like the biscuits at Gulf Coast Grill.
German food in San Diego?
Axel told me in July he would be closed throughout August...the place should be open now.
Happy Hour food deals in San Diego?
My favorite DT is Chive, like Laurel, they have the $6 before 6 and the $7 before 7…good drinks and tasty food.
I also like the free filet mignon sandwiches at Donovan’s served daily from 4 to 6.
Pacific Beach
A few more to add:
Marino’s on Ingraham St (mom and pop place)
Super Wok on Ingraham St (another mom and pop place)
Thai Village on Mission (my favorite Thai in PB)
Ramiro's Mission Blvd (chicken burrito)
Liar’s Club on Mission (real close to PB, just came from there!)
High-end recommendation needed for SD
I’ve been tasked to purchase a restaurant gift certificate for the boss’ birthday. I figure we will collect about 150 bucks. I will provide a nice bottle of wine from Artesa winery.
Which high-end restaurant would the hounds recommend? I considered Market, 1500 Ocean, Bertrand at Mister A's, AR Valentien, Georges, and Tapenade. Any others?
If you were my boss, where would you want to go?
Turquoise/Cafe Europa--Pacific Beach
It's great to hear El Chevere! Finally PB is starting to show some life besides the college bar food! I drive by Mama Mia's every night after closing hours, and there is still a line to get in the place...hopefully the staff does not burn out.
