Looking for the best destination restaurants in RI, Mass, and CT

I've been to Hen of the Wood and have considered driving there just to have dinner (after a beer at the Alchemist). I would agree that both Mill at 2T and Metro Bis are top notch and that anyone who might be in the greater Hartford area would be well served to venture to Simsbury and try them.

I like the Max chain quite a bit but there is no way Max Downtown is a "destination".

Best Roast Chicken Methods & Recipes

That chicken looks beautiful, I have done spatched chicken on the grill but it usually ends up burning. I'll be back at I t is month or two and will look to your blog for some ideas. Are you using a gas or charcoal grill?

Best Roast Chicken Methods & Recipes

Sounds a lot like a method Julia Child uses, I have both books I'll compare the the two and at least one should get an appearance in the 52.

Best Roast Chicken Methods & Recipes

So my cooking project currently is to cook 52 different whole chicken recipes. I had hoped to do this in a year but expect it to take a little longer than that. So far I have roasted chickens inspired by Ina Garten, Gordon Hammersly & Tyler Florence. On my list to do are Mark Bittman & several recipes by Marcella Hazan. I'm still pawing through my cookbooks for ideas but thought I would come here as well. Give me some great ideas for roast chicken, what are your favorites?

Beef Stock - Questions

Bought a 1/4 cow this past fall and have been broadening my cooking repertoire as I cook my way through it. Last weekend I made my first ever batch of beef stock using about 3# of shanks. I followed Molly Stevens recipe from all about braising only because the book was in my hand as I was looking as roast ideas as well. The recipe was not too complicated and produced a great tasting/looking product. I would say I added about 12 cups of water total during cooking and simmered uncovered for 4 hours both of which are right along the lines her recipe calls for. After refrigerating and removing the thin layer of solidified fat I had a pretty gelatinous "stock". I put it on the stove quicky and a with a slight warming it loosened right up. In the end I had 4 cups of "stock" to freeze.

So... Does this seem right? Did the stock reduce more then one might intend getting 4 for cups from 12? Should I have added more water during the cooking or perhaps thinned as a I measured out and froze?

Beef Shoulder Roast?

Recently bought 1/4 of a cow, have all sorts of various roast cuts and not sure what to do with them. Just pulled a 2.68 # shoulder roast from the freezer. As it's Saturday AM now picked that roast so there's plenty of time for it to thaw for tomorrow dinner.

Looking for recipe & cooking thoughts, it's a bit difficult for me figure which cuts should be cooked in which ways. Any help is appreciated.

Best Burger in CT

In my opinion Plan B has the best burgers not to mention an amazing selection of micro brew beer. I've probably tried 2/3 of the choices on the menu and haven't found one I don't like. From the classic bacon and cheese, to garlic mayo & sauteed onions, from the squeeler to the buffalo chicken burger they all rock!

Wood-n-Tap has a great burger and might be the best in the Hartford area if not for Plan B. I've been to Max Burger but only once, the burger was very good but the cost and wait will mean it will not be regular stop.

I did meet the owner of Plan B once sitting at the bar in Simsbury, so additionally I feel good about supporting Plan B and it's associated restaurants. Wood-n-Tap feels more anonymous and of course Max does have that corporate polished feel.

From the comments above I will need to make a stop at Joey Garlics, love the pizza now I need to try the burger.

Phoenix downtown for four nights !?

These look like great suggestions. I'll let you know how they work out.

Phoenix downtown for four nights !?

Pizza Bianco looks great ! Would it be a fun place to go alone?

Phoenix downtown for four nights !?

Will be staying in Phoenix downtown, probably no rental, at the Wyndham for four nights starting this Saturday.

Are there any places not to be missed? Pubs & micro brews are a favorite followed by nicer restaurants with farm fresh ingredients. I also assume the Mexican must be pretty authentic. Any suggestions are welcome.

New Yorker in Providence

Siena on Federal Hill would be my choice.

ideas for dinner near/around Manchester, CT

We just tried Danny's yesterday based partially upon these comments. I was less than impressed, The pulled pork was OK, my sliced buffalo was dry, the "side" dishes, ie. french fries were boring. An app of corn fritters was overpriced and poorly presented. The atmosphere was all "dive" with taped together seats, paper plates and sticky ketchup bottles. Don't get me wrong, I like a dive if the food is good, Danny's doesn't qualify.
