Nina's Waffles & Sweets, Red Bank (White Street)

I love the "naked" waffle.. as is, heated up. I don't need any toppings. It's crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and smells incredible. I've had one for breakfast and just as easily, had one for dessert. However... if i'm feeling the craving, then i've gotta go with the chocolate-covered m&m waffle on a stick. I had one of these today and I have no regrets! I definitely recommend you try it. I hear they're going to be adding ice cream to the menu soon as well. I think some outdoor tables (or even 2 benches) would be a nice addition. I look forward to seeing them thrive as the weather warms up.

Sugar Rush, Red Bank - new cake store

Well to each his own, I suppose. For instance, I loathe Crumbs. But I love Sugarush and Flaky Tart (in Atlantic Highlands).

As for the price, I don't mind because I typically go there for *a* cupcake or two.. as for the $7 price claim, haha yes if you wanted your cupcake iced, filled and topped with over 15 different things! Typically, realistically... most people's cupcakes would be between the $2.50-$3.50 range.

(Btw, the reason I pointed out the correct spelling of sugarush was because someone had asked about the Warren Brown show on Food Network, and I was just pointing out the different spelling.)

Anyway, I wish them the best and at the very least, they are brightening people's day with their cute shop and fun concept.

Sugar Rush, Red Bank - new cake store

Sugarush cupcakes are the perfect size (not too big, not too small; They have just the right amount of icing (which in itself is the perfect consistency, whether its buttercream or whipped cream or any of their other specialties), all while being not overly sweet. The cakes are never dry... they are fresh and moist, light and airy. Some of them even come with various fillings (such as mint buttercream, raspberry coulis and more), not to mention all kinds of toppings beyond the realm of generic... plain ol' sprinkles are SO last year...

It's also obvious that the owners are fully aware that everyone eats with their eyes first. The shop itself is a feast for the senses, artfully decorated in candy colors and textures from floor to ceiling.

Another cool concept that Sugarush employs is the idea of a "cupcake bar" wherein you the customer gets to select an un-iced cupcake, and then customize the icing, toppings, and any other embellishments you'd like.

They also have a big selection of vintage/retro candy as well.

Really cool, fun place!

Affordable, no-fuss good eats in/near Wanamassa, NJ?

Hello everyone!

My best friend bought his first home recently in the Wanamassa/Ocean area and we are still pretty green to the area and have been hard-pressed to find "our type" of places.

We're looking for reliable, affordable, no-muss/no-fuss good eats in and around the area. Places that serve things like burgers, salads, pastas, sandwiches, etc.

Towns we'd be open to would be: Wanamassa, Ocean, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Allenhurst, Loch Arbour, Oakhurst, Deal, Interlaken, Bradley Beach, Neptune, Belmar

To given you an idea of what we're looking for, some places we like are:

Nagles - Ocean Grove
The Lake House - Loch Arbour
Main Street USA - Wanamassa
The Starving Artist - Ocean Grove
Patty K's - Ocean Grove
Twisted Tree Cafe - Asbury Park

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions! Thank you... :)

Childhood Food Memories - Jersey shore

Careless Navigator was demolished around mid-March of this year.

Clam Hut was sold in 2001 and became a strange italian place, but eventually went back to being called The Clam Hut again a few years ago. It's *okay*, but I agree, nowhere near its former glory. I actually worked there for 6+ years as a hostess/waitress and have very fond memories of the staff and regulars. I miss it a lot!

Breakfast in the shore area?

I just recently discovered Patty K's in Ocean Grove. It's a small dive but the food was outstanding, in my opinion. We've been there half a dozen times now and only once was it less-than-stellar. Nothing fancy, but just really yummy breakfast food. I usually get an omelette with toast and homefries with apple juice and coffee. My bf does the same or similar. Last time, they also included a mini-muffin w/ the platter and it was carrot/raisin which is not something I would typically go for but I tried it and it was amazing! I've been trying to replicate the recipe @ home, to no avail... so I keep going back! :)

I would also recommend:

Amy's on Ocean Avenue in Long Branch (cinnamon almond french toast is the best, plus literally HUNDREDS of omelettes to choose from)

Flaky Tart (of course!) in Atlantic Highlands for bakery and pastry type items mostly although she does usually also have at least one kind of fritatta available

Steve's in Sea Bright -- a local dive that has been there for years but has an extremely loyal customer base and mmmm breakfast rocks

Theo's in Ocean Grove -- this isn't outstanding but when you pair it with the insane view and the fact that it's literally on the beach, it makes up for it and you leave very satisfied. Affordable too. They can manage pancakes and coffee. Don't order anything intricate.

Turning Point and News Cafe in Pier Village (Long Branch) -- I agree w/ what was said here about the prices being high.. they are, but it's a clean and bright place w/ excellent food. I really love the Mexican Skillet, and the granola/mixed fruit bowl is so so good (I order mine without yogurt) and I'm always craving it. Be prepared to wait for a table but you just might find a new place to add to your favorites. I find this particular location to be superior to the other Turning Point locations. Joint side-by-side to the News Cafe-- this is also a cute little walkup counter where you can order salads, paninis, wraps, soups, coffee drinks, etc if you're in more of a hurry or just want a quick bite while you peruse their many many newspapers and magazine racks on hand. Smart, friendly, and helpful college aged kids run the counter and aside from the crowds it's always been a pleasant experience.

good luck!

"All Mixed Up" - Ocean Twp NJ

"I have found however that I can recreate a similar salad at home (which requires a good part of my Sunday preparing all the "mix-ins" for the week ahead)"

I agree... I do this very often, in fact, I did it last night! I am definitely a fan of big 'ol salads w/ tons of textures and flavors throughout.

I definitely sympathize w/ Elaine in that episode of 'Seinfeld' when she couldnt order her favorite diner menu item -- 'The Big Salad' -- from the menu at a different diner:

George: Let's go to Reggie’s.
Elaine: Reggie’s? I can't eat anything there.
George: It's the same menu.
Elaine: There's no “Big Salad.”
George: They'll make you a “Big Salad.” What do you think, they're the only one's that make a “Big Salad”?

and then later.....

Elaine: How about a Big Salad?
Hilde: A big salad?
Elaine: (to George) You see?
George: Just tell her what’cha want, they'll make it for ya.
Elaine: It's a salad, only bigger, with lots of stuff in it.
Hilde: I can bring you 2 small salads.
Elaine: Could you put it in a big bowl?
Hilde: We don't have any big bowls.
Elaine: All right. Just give me a cup of decaf.
Hilde: We have Sanka.

:-)

"All Mixed Up" - Ocean Twp NJ

Stack c- same thing happened to me! I work in Red Bank and i order lunch online thru this one website i use.. that's how I learned about All Mixed Up. LOVE their salads. Granted, they're located in Ocean but the site says their delivery area stretches to Red Bank. I ordered from there 2 or 3 times, and then when i ordered most recently, they called me and told me that it will be a $25 minimum to deliver to redbank. i explained that i'd ordered there before and hadnt been told that. she explained to me that my office was why they created that new rule! laaaaaaame. i still drive there myself though, bc my bf recently bought a house about 3 minutes from the place. but frustrating that i cant get my amazing fresh salads delivered to work! i really love it there, adn the food is great. the prices may be a tad high but to me, it is worth it b/c of the freshness and no skimping on quality. REAL chicken breast... not that nasty 'formed with rib meat' processed crap. bright, colorful interior. lots of tex-mex choices too. yum. my favorite dressing is the spicy Thai Peanut. mmmmmm. but BOOOOO to the $25 minimum out of the blue!

Lunch in or near Allenhurst NJ?

I adore the 'new' Lake House. The food was really, really good on my most recent visit. Their new chef has done some really fantastic things to the menu. One word of complaint was the the live music in and around the bar area was FAR too loud to maintain a comfortable level of conversation. Go on acoustic night, or a night with no live music and you'll be all set. I recommend the lobster fra diavolo, and the sweet potato fries. As for Rafferty's in AP... LAME. We gave it 2 separate tries about a month apart and both were miserable expeiences. Terrible service, mediocre food (at best), and I actually ended up sending my order back because it was not at all appealing and was quite undercooked. So yes I would definitely recommend The Lake House (it's Loch Arbour, right on the very edge of where Allenhurst and Interlaken join up), Mr. C's (at the Allenhurst beach club), or Captain Jack's (in Ocean Grove). Good luck!

Best burger in Mon/OC?

i know some have disagreed, but my favorite burger place is still The Pour House in Shrewsbury. reasonable price, large portion, great quality and taste. i usually order the cheeseburger platter (which includes fries [GOTTA do the Long Branch fries instead of the regular fries], lettuce, tomato, onion, cole slaw and a pickle) and i absolutely have to have it with their famous Cheddar sauce. be warned that it is not a liquidy sauce... it is more the consistency of a spread that has been warmed up a bit. Not quite pastey, not quite saucy. All I know is that it's made fresh there every day and its got a real sharp cheddar taste and compliments the beef really well. Very often I make a special trip to the PH strictly for the cheddar sauce! Sometimes I'll sit at the bar and forgo a meal and just split a bowl of potato chips w/ a side of cheese sauce w/ a friend. MMM! Anyway.... PH is where I go for my favorite burger. Next best would actually be the Windmill. Fresh, never frozen. I get the California cheeseburger on a hard roll (you have to specifically ask for a hard roll or you will get the tiny other roll they have - and there is a slight extra charge for this option but for me it makes all the difference) which comes w/ all the fixins. Mmmm. And can I just add that everyone has been mentioning Barnacle Bill's in Rumson and I know it's been there forever but I've gone 3 dfferent times in the last 2 years and have been insanely disappointed every time...not just in the burgers, but in my whole experience. Third time was NOT a charm-- and after having given it a fair chance-- I won't be going there again.

Flakey Tart - Atlantic Highlands.

Woohoo! Made it there this morning before work. I live the next town over so it was no big hike for me, which I'm quite excited about b/c I KNOW I'll be back tomorrow morning! It was so, so good. I bought a couple things for the office and brought them over today and everyone was very happy. I work at Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank so treats are much-appreciated when we're super busy! I bought: 2 plain croissants (amazing), 2 pain au chocolate (also amazing), 2 chocolate/almond croissants (the almond paste inside was a bit much for me, but live and learn... the toasted almond slices and powdered sugar on top were fantastic) and 4 of those insanely good chocolate ganache-filled macaroons (@ $1 a pop, I didn't even mind... SO AWESOME) and a cup of coffee. I forgot to ask anyone's name but the lady who helped me at the counter (I assume Marie?) was so nice and funny. I told her it was my first time stopping in and that I'd heard about the place online, which she was very pleased with. What a cute (and tiny) place! I'm looking forward to buying a salad or sandwich to take with me next time. Who am I kidding... next time is gonna be TOMORROW MORNING! They also had fresh-cut fruit salad, chili, paninis, cupcakes, and all sorts of drinks. Smelled so good in there. And I liked that there was a huge viewing window into the kitchen so you could watch all the bakers (who today were all women) mixing and chatting. Very cute. So yes... definitely stop in whenever you can. The parking lot in front is very tiny but there's plenty of street parking in the area, and also a small lot directly behind the building as well. And by the way, as per the logo and sign, its F-L-A-K-Y. No "E". I'm attaching a photo of the cute little macaroon. Sorry it's so dark. Bon appetit!
