What's good in Kendall/Central Sq of late?
What about the Cambridge brewing company? I haven't been in a long time, but it was very laid back and not too expensive either.
Rye whiskey making a come back? [moved from the Boston board]
Yes, South shore Mass. I usually don't find myself in Providence that much, but I'll keep in mind if I am. Thanks.
Little Red Smokehouse Carver, Ma
Yes, I forgot about that. They actually started having some live entertainment at 9pm on Friday and Saturday nights. It's only one guy with a guitar usually. The smokehouse is a small place with a lot of atmosphere.

They boast the biggest breakfast menu in New England. The food is very good. The service could be better sometimes. They don't have enough wait staff sometimes and they are rarely over 20. Other than that it is worth going to. There are crowds after 9am on weekends though.

Well, no responses so far. I highly recommend it and would love to hear back. When we find a new place we like to pass it on to other food people. They dry rub all their meats and smoke them. They also make three different kinds of bbq sauce that you can apply yourself. Get the 14 hour smoked ribs or the apple wood smoked turkey if you do go. The beef and pork chili is really good too. They won the Martha's vineyard chili festival in 2007 with that. They also have fried green tomatos as an app. Enjoy.

Has anyone been and what did you think? My wife and I are big fans, but I would like to hear what others think.
HASH
The Early American restaurant on Hancock st in Quincy right next to Cental middle school and across the street from the Fowler house has really good homemade hash. They cook there own corned beef for it. I have been going there for that for years! It is a bit on the expensive side as Breakfast joints go, but once in a while it's cool.

I will try Old Overholt if I can find it. Price is a concern. I do understand that these distilleries are charging more for the small batches they do make. I am a scotch and bourbon drinker and was curious about rye. Bourbon is sweet. I curious about the spicy character of rye after reading about it.
Here are some of the other drinks that were originally made with rye.
Algonquin
Brooklyn
De La Louisiane
Deshler
Liberal
Manhattan
Monte Carlo
Old Fashioned
Old Pal
Saratoga
Sazerac
Stargazer
Vieux Carre
Best Chinese on the South shore??
Hello all,
Do any of you have any reccomendations to the best chinese on the South shore? I know about the new great Chow in Abington and would like to try that, but saw on this board about the drinks being way over priced. I was hoping to find a hidden jewel that is a clean place with great food from Quincy to the Cape cod canal worth trying.
One trend I notice about the lower end places is that when you order chicken terriyaki instead of being made with the white meat tender they use fatty dark meat pieces which is a real turn off! Has anybody else experienced this?

I have heard that Rye whiskey is making a come back in small batch form from reading an article in Esquire mag. Does anybody know any bars or liquor stores selling this now on the South shore and what were your experiences with Rye if you have tried it?
Thanks, drewby7777

My wife and I are semi regulars at the little red smokehouse in Carver, Ma. I have been very impressed with their dry rubbed smoked offerings, like their baby back ribs that are smoked for 14 hours! They also have a mean beef and pork chili that is more savory than hot. They cold smoke their cheddar cheese and that goes on top of the chili. Yum! They actually won the 2007 Martha's vineyard chili fest with it! It is a small place with alot of charm. The owner, Bob has put much into this place and it is well worth the drive for something that is unique to the south shore. He actually has fried green tomatoes on the menu when they are available.
My recommendation is getting a starter of either Mandy's smokey treats, that smoked cheddar I spoke of, deep fried and served with horse radish dipping sauce or an order of smokehouse corn bread or both! They have a really good creamed corn and whatever is left of that goes into the corn bread the next day! Then I like to get a combo platter with half ribs and half apple wood smoked turkey. You get two sides on top of that! Very good! My wife especially likes the beef brisket sandwich with bacon and cheddar cheese on top! It's amazing she's still thin the way she eats! I only look at a hot fudge sundae and gain 3 pounds. Oh well. There is also a full bar with some nice beer selections on tap and in bottle. Best times to go to avoid a wait for dinner is before 5pm and after 8pm on weekend nights. It is a popular place with locals for dinner and take out. Their hours are 4:00 to 11:30 Wednesday thru Friday and 11:30 to 11:30 on Saturdays and Sundays. The kitchen is open until 10:00 all nights and drinks are served until 11:30pm.

If anybody else has been there please respond with an opinion I would be interested in hearing others point of view concerning this hidden gem in Carver, Ma
