Taqueria Maria’s Monroe Township, NJ Anyone?

Thank you Tapas for this find. A visit today netted some really nice eats, including an awesome guacamole which was more like a really fresh pico de gallo with cut up slices of avocado and super thick chips, and a taste of all three pork tacos (chorizo, al pastor, and carnitas). Both our waitress and Maria were helpful with the menu, and interested in how we found them (a plug for CH). Wish it were a bit closer than the 30 min ride, but will be back for sure.

I've been in and around Long Branch for nearly 25 years and have never been to Ocean View Bakery. Need to correct that very soon.

I've been back several times over the past few months...quickly becoming a personal favorite. A late night dinner at the bar last night -- french onion soup (thank you bgut for the rec), the incredible burger with hand-cut fries, and a Chimay Red. Just perfect.

Best of Monmouth County: Readers' Choice Awards 2014

Really not surprised NOTB is absent from this "best of" list. While probably an over generalization (but probably not too far from the truth), I would guess that whoever took the time to vote doesn't know about NOTB and/or wouldn't step foot there. Indeed, if not for CH, NOTB would have gone unnoticed by myself (and probably at least a few others on this board). And, I suspect, not many of us on CH voted in this survey.

Vietnam Bistro in Howell, NJ

The renewal of this thread reminded me that I have been meaning to give this place a try. Finally made it today with my son. Enjoyed a lunch of summer rolls, vietnamese egg rolls, and a couple of Banh Mi sandwiches (pork and beef). It was all good. Will return to check out more of the menu. We were the only customers for the hour we spent for lunch. Hope they are making it.

Good values good food specials and deals at chowhound worthy places

This is probably more in line with Nicholas at the bar, but Brandl in Belmar has a couple of nice deals. On Sundays for $35 you can choose a 3 course surf or turf (soup or salad, entrée, dessert). The surf includes the very good lazy lobster which goes for $35 by itself any other day. Just did this last weekend. On Fridays they offer a 2 for 1 fish special.

10th Ave Burrito in Belmar also has a number of weekday specials. Mondays are free dessert with an entrée; Tuesdays are all you can eat tacos for $12; Thursday's are $.50 wings.

Il Cotello

I have no first-hand knowledge, but I think the closure was related to their existing location. Sounds like they are looking for a new landing spot.

Another new Indian restaurant coming soon to Freehold boro ?

I stopped in this evening as the front doors were open. Not open for business yet, but they hope to be open by next week. The space looks great. Really looking forward to this opening.

Ibby's Falafel Freehold

I was quite surprised to visit Ibby's today to find that the name has changed to Main Street Falafel. I tried to elicit info from the guy behind the counter (he's been working there for some time) as to whether the family behind Ibby's is still running the show, but he was not forthcoming with info. The food was as good as usual and other than the name change I could not discern any differences (other than the addition of a slice of dill pickle to our side of hummus). Fingers crossed that things stay as good as they've been.

Where can I get a good wrap in Monmouth County?

The burrito wrapper was like a wrap and they cut in half and serve it like a sandwich. FWIW, I didn't like it.

Funny you say that. Recently went to Chaka in Pier Village and had a burrito that was more wrap-like than burrito-like.

Empanada Guy

Yes, very good hot sauce. Not a huge fan of the lobster variety. Give the chorizo a try. Its more of a pulled pork filling than chorizo. Probably my favorite one.

Empanada Guy

FWIW, I have received only courteous service from the owner and his staff at the restaurant in Freehold. I know that at least on Facebook, these guys are really good about letting their customers know where their trucks are going to be located and to give notice when a truck is not going to be in its usual location. They also advise when they need to shut down the restaurant's operations in order to prepare for weekend food events. Certainly does you no good if you haven't seen the notice, but I think they are trying to get the word out so that people aren't disappointed.

Poached Pear Bistro, Point Pleasant Beach

Saturday night the wife and I left the house and played Open Table roulette. Our plan was to try to find seats at the bar of one of the Shipwreck joints, unless something came up on Open Table. Lo and behold, Poached Pear Bistro had a table for two at 8:30. I have been following PPB on Facebook and knew that they had just opened the night before. The chef/owner, Scott Giordano, has an impressive pedigree, I believe having most recently run the kitchen at Whispers in Spring Lake. Knowing that there were bound to be a few hiccups on Day 2 of service, we took the plunge.

I'm not terribly familiar with PPB and the location on Arnold Ave where PPB is located. It occupies the end unit of a small strip mall with the other end occupied by another relative newcomer, Shorepoints Coastal BBQ (a promising looking menu). Sandwiched between the two restaurants is a butcher (Arctic Market).

PPB's current dining room at the end of the strip mall is not intended to remain the main dining room for long. They have imminent plans to break through to the empty wine shop next door and to make the wine shop location the main dining room, and the current dining room a private party room. Very ambitious plans for a new venture. While I didn't actually count, the current dining room looked to have seating capacity for 35-40 diners. When we arrived to a full restaurant the room was very loud and remained that way until some of the tables cleared and were not turned over.

As anticipated, there were some just opened hiccups along the way for which I give them a pass and won't bother mentioning. It is worth mentioning that the wait staff were on their game and, in particular, our main server, Michelle, was terrific. The menu has a lot of offerings for both the apps and mains. The bread service consists of a warm roll with some hard salted butter. We started with the lobster bisque and grilled heart of romaine. The bisque was an exemplary rendition and we would order it again. The grilled heart of romaine was a dud. There was hardly any romaine (a leaf, maybe 2). The croutons tasted and looked like they came from a box and it was underdressed for my taste. For mains, we had the strip steak and pork chop. The strip steak was a homerun. Cooked a perfect medium rare, the steak had a chili rub and a small dollop of melted softrito butter. The steak was served with "asparagus fries" -- breaded and perfectly fried asparagus. What threw the dish over the top was the "white chocolate" risotto. I have no idea what they put into it, but the risotto was amazing. The sort of dish you return to a restaurant to have again. The pork chop was good, but a bit overcooked. It was described as apple cider brined and was served over spaetzle with caramelized apples on top.

We passed on dessert, but were told that the dessert chef (whose name escapes me) is competing on Chopped. The four top next to us was comped dessert due to a problem with an entrée and the desserts all looked delicious and received high praise from our neighbors.

We will return for the lobster bisque, steak and wonderful risotto, but will probably wait until they open their new dining room and have a couple of months under their belts. A welcome addition.

Remington's, Brandl, other?

I need a restaurant for a birthday dinner (Monmouth preferred) for the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend - party of 9 or 10. Will have a disabled guest who cannot easily maneuver steps. Also will have a couple of kids and teens in tow. Remington's and Brandl show availability on Open Table. Been to Brandl many times, not Remington's. Menu wise they seem comparable. I hate to spend $30+ on entrees for my teen boys, but probably can't be avoided. Any thoughts on these choices or something else to consider? Trying to keep it relatively safe in terms of food (American/New American, Italian). TIA!!

Food trucks & fire pits in Jackson on May 18 Sunday

I attempted to eat the bacon on a stick from that truck last year. As much as I wanted to love it, it was too greasy and fatty, and I simply couldn't stomach it (and that's saying a lot from me).

Food trucks & fire pits in Jackson on May 18 Sunday

We arrived early on Sunday and departed early...just as things were really starting to get busy. No "fishy" problem with our lobster rolls. I could have finished off another roll or two, but figured I'd be hitting them up again this weekend at Monmouth Park. I was quite impressed with the winery in general. Had never been previously. It seemed a very professional operation.

By the way, the Empanada Guy has a storefront restaurant in Freehold in case you ever have a hankering.
