48 Hours in SD

According to the map, it's La Jolla just south of Torrey Pines. I'll look into El Pescador. Thanks!

48 Hours in SD

Heading to San Diego/La Jolla for our anniversary April 13-15. We're from LA but we haven't really spent much time down in SD so we're looking for some suggestions on where to eat.

Any great lunch and dinner spots? We've been researching and we may be interested in one of Brian Malarky's places, but I've heard mixed things. And we're leaning towards Truluck's because we're fans of Joe's Stone Crabs and apparently they serve them. But we're still open to suggestions. We're big seafood eaters and we're not afraid of hole in the wall restaurants for lunch and casual dinners, but we'll probably do something a bit on the nice side for dinner Saturday night.

Are there any hidden gems for cheap fresh lobster? Best taco spot?

And if anyone can suggest some good eats on the way down from LA, we're open to hearing them! We're staying in La Jolla, so we're open to that area and Del Mar as well.

Thanks in advance!

Omakase in the Valley - Suggestions?

I love Chiba! But I don't recall ever seeing omakase listed. Have you had it? Price?

Omakase in the Valley - Suggestions?

Went to Kiwami last night for the first time and loved it. I'm thinking about trying one of their Omakase options soon. If I recall correctly, the menu lists two options, one for $50 and one for $70. Has anyone tried either? Is the $50 option good enough for a date night or is the $70 option significantly better? What's the difference? I've also read that there is a $100 option where you sit with Katsu-ya. Is that the only course where you sit in the back room?

Ideally I'd like to spend under $100/person. Any other suggestions for omakase in the area? Looking for options on the Valley side, between Burbank and Encino.

Thanks!

What to eat in LA if you're not from the US...

Great list, and I also like Katsuya better than Mr. Chow. The two are actually quite different but both good suggestions.

I was definitely going to add taco trucks. And great other suggestions as well. Forgot about Jitlada and Langer's and AOC! Thanks!

Park's is a good idea too. I also like Genwa. I think sending them to one of these nicer Korean places is probably a good idea. Not sure they've ever had Korean but I'll be sure to throw it out there!

Good idea about Spago. I'll suggest that in case they want the whole celebrity chef experience. Any great Mexican suggestions?

What to eat in LA if you're not from the US...

I have some family friends coming to town in a couple of weeks and they'll be staying in LA for a day or two at the beginning and end of their trip. I've been tasked to make a list of LA eats and I'm mixed about what to suggest.

What are the best LA eats that really give an out of towner a taste of LA? I think their budget ranges from $ - $$$$ so anything goes. And I'm not sure what cuisines they enjoy or if they'll try anything so I want to be able to suggest a bunch of places.

Try to keep the suggestions to the Hollywood/Santa Monica/Malibu areas (possibly Koreatown & Downtown as well). They're staying at the Standard in Hollywood. I should probably add a good Mexican and Korean place as well. Just starting the list but so far I have...

Restaurants offering a Passover menu?

Anyone know anything about The Gorbals Passover Dinner? I hear it's 10 items but haven't heard what they are, or a price. I'm sure it's not autentic but probably really good...any details?

Restaurants offering a Passover menu?

Thanks...yeah, I might head to Art's. Not looking for a seder to go to, just a Passover menu. Factor's has one and is my preferred deli, but they close at 4pm tonight and tomorrow, so it looks like I'll be heading to Art's. Thanks!

Restaurants offering a Passover menu?

Does anyone know if Jerry's Deli offers a Passover menu?

An American's First Time in London

I'll be visiting London (staying in Hampstead) from Feb. 24 - Mar. 2. It'll be my first time there...where do I need to go? What do I need to eat? I'm a foodie on a budget and an adventurous eater. Any advice? Thanks!

Cheaper Studio City Sushi Row options?

Katsu-ya does have a really good deal...I always get the Chirashi and it's about $13. This isn't your ordinary "fake crab" Chirashi, but it's the chef's selection, usually including giant clam, REAL crab, and a great assortment of fish.

Chiba is delicious as well but definitely not cheap. It's not outrageous, just average prices I guess, but you definitely get your money's worth and the quality is terrific.

Green Tea Matcha in NoHo?

Are there any places to buy green tea (or other) matcha in North Hollywood/Studio City area? I tried Trader Joe's (the one in Hollywood) and didn't see any. Do regular grocery stores sell it or do I need to find a specialty shop?

What is good at Porto's?

If you plan on eating lunch there, get the Medianoche Preparada.

The medianoche itself is ham, roasted pork, & Swiss cheese served with mayonnaise, mustard, and pickles on a toasted sweet roll. But the "preparada" has ham croquettes on it as well, and is the way to go.

Mastro's Steakhouse-Bev. Hills

The lobster mashed potatoes are out of control. So good! Mac and cheese was great too, but get the lobster mashed if available. Don't get both...way too rich.

If Joe's Stone Crabs (flown in from Miami Beach) are available, get some. They're in season right now.

The cold seafood tower and jumbo prawns were great too.

Burgers in the Valley?

Billy's could work, although I was hoping for something a bit nicer. Mo's is decent but would prefer something a bit closer. Also thought of the Stand, although that's not really a sit down kinda place. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Burgers in the Valley?

I have a picky aunt and uncle coming in town for dinner tonight. I know of a ton of great burgers from Hollywood to the Westside, but do they exist in the Valley? I can't recall ever having a good one out this way.

LA Cooking Classes

Hope you guys can help, and I hope this is the right place to post this!

I'm on the look out for some really enjoyable cooking classes in LA. It's a gift for 2 friends (they're a couple) so something romantic could be good, or something funky. Just good classes taught by someone who knows what they're doing in a nice environment would work.

Looking to spend between $50-$80pp.

Is that possible?

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Fun place for drinks/dinner?

Thanks for the suggestions. Give Lucy's a shot if you're ever in the area.

Pasadena isn't a bad idea...don't think she's been there. She gets out to LA about once a year but only for the past couple of years, so things are still kinda new.

The happy hours are a good idea, but unless they're after 9pm happy hours, I'm not sure we'll make it.

Father's Office I thought would be good if we're eating. The drinks are good there but the wait is probably not worth it just for some beer. Barney's is good usually cause it's pretty easy to get into, cheap, but I'll agree the food doesn't cut it.

Oh, and as for the inexpensive comment, just in general we're not looking for something that'll cost an arm and a leg to park, drink and possibly eat. I don't mind paying for a meal, but we're looking for a more laid back place to grab a drink, not pay $13 for a martini on top of like $20 for valet. That kinda thing...

Actually, the thought of El Carmen just popped into my head. Always liked that place.

Thanks for the suggestions though...still not sure what our plan is so keep them coming.

Any thoughts on Culver City? Haven't been there since a bunch of new places opened...

Late night drinks in Burbank or Toluca Lake?

Check out Lucy's 51 on Riverside in Toluca Lake. It's a few blocks west of Don Cuco but it's got 51 varieties of martinis, full liquor, and some really good food.

Not sure exactly what time they close but I have a feeling they're open late.

Fun place for drinks/dinner?

I have a feeling you guys will have some great suggestions...here's the deal.

My older sister (33) is in town and wants to go out tonight. She wants to go drink with her little bro (me) so I need a place that has good drinks, isn't too expensive, isn't an ordeal to get into and has a good crowd. Also it shouldn't be overly expensive.

We'll be near the 405 and Ventura Blvd. so any area will do. Right now my thoughts are:

Lucy's 51 (near Burbank)
Father's Office (Santa Monica)
Barney's Beanery (WeHo)

We're still up in the air about dinner, so it should mainly be a good fun bar with an option of good food.

Any thoughts?

Raw Bar?

When I used to live in Miami we had plenty of raw bars. One in particular, was quite affordable and had a raw bar happy hour. From what I can remember, stone crab claws were a buck a piece, shrimp for a quarter, oysters and clams for either fifty cents or 75. Is there anything like that in LA or down south a bit?

If not something similar, can someone recommend an affordable raw bar in the LA area?

Thanks in advance.

Red Mango open in Westwood

I also reported on a taste test I was fortunate to take about a month ago...

http://wwff.wordpress.com/2007/05/26/reviewed-hello-red-mango/

FYI, I think Red Mango is more yogurt-like than Pinkberry (and in fact their yogurt has much more cultures and bacteria) and I thought it was much creamier. I still like the Pink, but if Red Mango opens a location in Hollywood I'll definitely be stopping by more often.

Lower East Side date place?

No where yet. Still a couple weeks away. Looking into the restaurants now.

Lower East Side date place?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll check them all out.

Lower East Side date place?

I'm an out of towner, she's a local. First technical date (long story). Been a while since we've seen each other. Lower East Side. Any suggestions?

As for price, not something fixed, but anything goes really. And any type of food...

Fiore Yogurt becomes "IF"

The yogurt is too, but they don't give you nearly as much toppings as Pinkberry! Not at all! In fact, instead of distributing my one topping around the entire cup of yogurt, the server kept all the topping on only half of it, not purposely, but because the two teaspoons of toppings he dished out landed there. I go only because it's across the street from my office, but if I had my choice I'd choose Pinkberry.

Have good wine, need place with no/low corkage

I second Cube. I went a few weeks back with a party of 4. We brought a couple bottles of wine, one red one white, and not only did they not charge a corkage fee, they provided an ice bucket for the white wine. Dinner included a few different cheese plates, a large salad for the table, zucchini blossoms, truffle pizza, and grilled artichoke. Total came to about $60. Great food and great value.
