thai restaurants serving raw blue crab

Raw blue crab is also found in Korean food and is one of my favorite things to eat. It is a little difficult to eat but when prepared well it is a textural and flavorful delight. The marination is what "cooks"the crab, similar to ceviche. If you are squeamish or don't like to get "involved" with your food then this is not for you. If you would like to try the Thai version I really enjoyed the version at Nad Pob Thai in Silverake on Sunset and Fountain.

Yu Chun: for all your cold Korean noodle needs this summer

"Like taking a cold shower while eating a pastrami sandwich, but not as soggy."

Every summer I can't wait to get face in a bowl of mulnaengmyun. Thanks for that awesome description, I'll be sure to share it with my sister who is a naengmyun fanatic. But tell me do they serve the noodles with the crispy asian pear? It is a sweet element that I cannot do with out in my naengmyun.

Territory BBQ ~ Silverlake ~ Short Review + Photos

Wow, in a bad way.
First the good stuff, cool ambiance in that not trying hard ambiance kinda way. Love the only outdoor seating, the fact they have pickled eggs and green beans and good tunes as well as a record store. It's a great concept, casual but cool. Oh, and the fried chicken was really really good, not greasy, just crispy, peppery tasty fried chicken, dark meat only. The free frozen pops aren't too shabby either.

Now the bad stuff; everything else. The two pouty girls working the counter looked like a couple of uptown hipsters slumming it as counter girls at the new hipster BBQ place. I mean a little friendliness would perk up the place alot. The owner was friendly and funny and that was a bonus. We ordered the Pulled pork plate, the brisket plate and the fried chicken plate. The pulled pork wasn't pulled, it was chopped which would be OK for a sandwhich but not for a plate and for $11 the portion was at about 4 maybe 5 oz. also the pork was incredibly bland. no smokey flavor that you crave when having BBQ. The Brisket was smokey but once again chopped into little mushy bits. The sides were also disappointing especially the sorry excuse for cole slaw that they serve. The only exceptions were the pickled green beans which were great.

This place has potential but won't go anywhere with out some more direction in the food department.

Places for Japanese dishware and glassware?

there is a wholesale japanese dishware/restaurant ware store on alameda between 6th & 4th named Eden Restaurant Supply. They have a large variety as well as great prices. They are in the same complex as the GRAINGER company on the east side of alameda one block north of 6th. Hope you find what you are looking for.

DO WE HAVE ANY LOCAL CHICKEN GROWERS?

Jidori brand chickens are all natural and humanely slaughtered. I love their chicken, it has great flavor. check them out at jidori.com. I also know that mitsuwa carries their chicken on occasion. Not sure if whole foods or bristol farms does.

How do you define Cheap Eats?

I would define a cheap meal not only by the dollar amount spent but also how much bang you get for your buck. all the taco stands and stuff are great but for a sit down meal I'm a big fan of dim sum, food for two at $25 is plenty and the variety is hard to beat (Elite in Monterey park for example is amazing quality and very affordable), Korean BBQ while a little outside of the $25 mark is still a great value for the amount of food and the general quality (assuming you go to a reputable place, for all you can eat I favor haejangchon on 6th). For an "American" meal I'm a fan of the park, they serve unassuming but quality food (the entree portions are sizeable and can be shared). I recently went to barbrix in silverlake and thought that the price point was great, quality food, although the portions were small great for a light dinner and well priced wine. For a more casual funky night I like to go to wurstkuche and get a brat or two with a beer, I'm not a huge fan of their dipping sauces for the fries as they are kinda pedestrian at best but the fries themselves are great. For BYO, there is always speranza on hyperion, the setting is a little strange but the food is dependable and the no corkage is an added bonus.

there are a million more places i'm sure but these are the places i tend to go due to geographic location

Best Veggie Burger you've had?

not a vegetarian but I do enjoy a good veggie burger, I used to work at 26 Beach long ago and theirs is pretty good, the best one I've had lately is at the park. They have a nice and nutty veggie burger, it is really hearty and flavorful.

Chill brunch spots in Hollywood/Los Filez/Silver Lake that aren't noisy!!!

you should think about adding cliff's edge to your list, they have a nice atmosphere and not too expensive, I would remove home and square one based upon the loudness factor and lamill based upon the cost factor. I had brunch at the park in echo park a couple weeks ago, very mellow, no wait and the food was very good and affordable. the park might be a bit out of the way for you though.

Help! Taking Berkeley Foodies to Dinner Downtown LA!

I second the recommendation for Izayoi or La Serenata, I like Canele but there are so many restaurants like that up in the bay. You should give them a taste of Los Angeles.

Ja Jyang Myeon - Korean Bean Paste Noodles

I grew up eating JJM at Young King and I still love it there, but now I make it at home. Its not that hard. There is a korean blogger living in Canada that blogs recipes including one for JJM. Her name is Maanghi. Look her up on You tube. And with all the korean markets in town you shouldn't have a problem finding all the ingredients.

Soup for when you're sick?

on another korean tip, if you are adventurous try the denjangchigae, it's a spicy fermented soybean paste and tofu stew that is not only delicious but good for you too. Add a little kimchi and you are in active enzyme heaven.

saltworks.us great website, i recommend the alderwood smoked salt, nice and mellow, hickory salt tends to be overwhelming and intense beyond reason.

Centeno's Last Lunch Service At Lot 1 With Photos

I also went to lunch that day at Lot 1 because I had been meaning to for such a long time and what with the chef leaving it seemed to be my last chance. My friend and I had the pork rillet after being told that the ocean trout rillet was out, the original baco, the carne picada baco and the stone fruit cobbler.
The rillet was good, not the best ever but solid, the pickled green bean were a little past their prime and a bit too sweet. The original baco was good as well, I agree the little cubes were delicious but were a little drowned out by all the other stuff in there with them. The bread was very good, a real stand out in terms of texture and flavor. The lentils were excellent, the marjoram vinaigrette was tangy and the portion was fine, I even had some left over. I preferred the flavor of the carne picada baco I thought the lamb sausage was great and the fingerling potato salad was simple but well prepared. The stone fruit crumble took 15 minutes and was also alright, the creme fraiche ice cream was great. All in all an above average lunch but nothing that I would have dreams about. My only complaint would be the awkwardness of the space, perhaps a bit exaggerated by the awkwardness of the waitress and chef and they worked their way through the day bravely trying to smile for the customers. Price wise it didn't seem to fit the neighborhood or the space but the quality of the ingredients can't be denied. I wish chef Centeno well and hopes he finds a place to do what he does well.
