Just passing thru Amarillo this week
I have done a few rood trips myself and think I understand what you’re asking, not sure of the specifics but. . . . if I was traveling through Amarillo three choices I might like, depending on mood:
Downtown – Crush Wine Bar, Friendly place, nice bar to sit at, sort of mixed American menu with small plates, cheese, wine, beer
West Side - Sakura, for sushi (I sit at the bar)
Central Amarillo on I-40, Fernando’s Mexican, I go there because of the salsa bar and tamales.
As for pastry, Franks does not open early enough for me but if you start a little late try that, otherwise do the Amarillo Doughnut Stop thing, it’s doughnuts but it is also Amarillo.
help with breakfast in Amarrillo not to far from I n-40 East
Guess I am a day late but would suggest The Pancake Station, my Sunday stand by (2800 Virginia Circle) or Calico County (2410 Paramount Boulevard), both near I 40 and Paramount. Hope you enjoyed your short stay.

veg in amarillo?
Sorry to say this will likely be to late for eatlove, but I was dinning at Calico County last night and thought to ask the server just how many of the vegetables were vegetarian. To my great regret, many of the more nutritious ones such as beans contain meat as flavor agents. One still could make a good meal of what is available but not what I had thought. Figured it best to update this for future Chowhond searches. I will keep an eye on the local menus for veggie options.

veg in amarillo?
We are a meat eating town but becoming more understanding of the vegetarian inclined. If you're driving though and looking for a pleasant stop, my suggestion would be Calico County.

They have a choice of a veggie plate that includes all the local favorites, just let them know you don't want any added bacon fat. Is a casual, relaxing and friendly place.

Amarillo report
Calico County does breakfast, lunch and supper so take your pick. Hope you enjoy your trip. As for me, I currently have a view of the Golden Gate Bridge out my port hole. Odd, but I do sort of wish I was in Amarillo.
Amarillo report
Both of the places I mentioned I would call New American with regional influences. Web sights with the menus are, http://www.ohmscafe.com/ & http://crushdeli.com/menu.php. These are upscale (for Amarillo) places and have good wine lists.
If you are driving with a night stop over, one other suggestion I would have is Calico County (http://www.calicocounty.net/). Very average crowd, with a whole menu of foods we in the area grew up eating. Not a 5 star dinning experience but comfortable.
If your looking for the top tourist spot in town, that is the Big Texan. Some people love it some hate it. Great gift shop!
Been a while since I was in Taos or Santa Fe, great food there. One interesting difference in that area and Texas Panhandle is the differences in the Tex-Mex and New Mexican-Mex cuisines. If your not one to eat that style food several times a week wait till you get to New Mexico.

Hope you had a little fun in Amarillo, you did seem to get around town a bit. We do have several Starbucks and a local coffee shop chain with at least 4 locations, Roasters. Also several other individual ones, surprised you missed the 806 coffee shop on 6th.
Enough of that though. What I wanted to respond to was the Dounut Stop buildings. The couple who started the chain (with one store in an old gas station I think) about 35 years ago have a son who is now an architect. As I understand, he has designed the last 3 or 4 locations. All new and made to look reto, guess i worked.
Amarillo report
Sorry, keep searching, Amarillo has several Starbucks.
There is a fairly wide spread range of dinning choices. I see your a wine drinker so you might try the downtown area for either OHMS or Crush Wine Bar. If it is a more regional experience you seek maybe try Coyote Bluff Cafe for one of there many burgers or the steak.
Got other suggestions too if you are looking for something else.
Steak in Amarillo
Regrettably, I am most likely late in my response, but from what I hear you saying, try the Country Barn. To my knowledge, they are the only place in town that has beef raised for them. Is a special bread of cattle, and I have had one of the steaks but been a while. Not as touristy as the Big Texan, but not as famous either.
No one in town uses Prime beef though there is a company in town that sells local Prime beef on the internet. Good eating.
Road trip: Amarillo down towards New Orleans....
Seems you’re not getting to much response here, so maybe something will help. It looks to me like you will be driving through Amarillo noonish, a good place to stop for a burger would be
Coyote Bluff Café 2417 S Grand St
Amarillo, TX 79103
East end of town, turn right at Grand just a few blocks on the left so it's not to far out of the way.
The road to Dallas from Amarillo has always seemed a bore to me.
Amarillo...breakfast?
I take it that your looking for something other than Cracker Barrel, IHOP and such. My local recommendations breakfast would be:
Pancake Station - 2800 Virginia Circle (basic breakfast place with local crowed)
Calico County - 2410 Paramount Boulevard (might be easiest to get in and most comfortable)
Blue Front Cafe - 801 W 6th Ave (if your a smoker)
There are Mexican Restaurants that serve breakfast but have not done them. Heard good things about La Campana - 2220 Canyon Dr, only eaten there at supper, was good though certainly not up scale.
Amarillo Trip Report
We aren't a major food destination for the most part, but glad you were able to eat. Hope the stay was enjoyable and also that you made it to the canyon.
I am about to spend 4-5 days in San Francisco myself, am a big fan of big city eats. Sure costs less here though!
Exhibition kitchen for solo dinner in SF
This may be late but one of my favorites is table 16 (or close to it) at Zuni Cafe. Just have t be sure you get the right table there.
Lubbock Saturday Night
I am not from Lubbock but was there a few months back. Had a pleasant meal at Manna Bread & Wine. Would highly recommend the place if the two of you are wine lovers as well as foodies.

Anything in Amarillo
Vegetarian
Calico County (2410 Paramount) A local home cooking mainstay, with a vegetable plate option.
Eat Rite Health Food & Restaurant (2441 W I-40) always has vegetarian items.
My personal thought on vegetarian Mexican Restaurant items is never trust them. For Mexican I like Fernando’s (2028 Paramount) for the salsa bar, but I tend to get in ruts.
BBQ places abound, guess my suggestion there would be Country Barn on I-40, another rut.
We have a surprisingly large Oriental community. Lots of small places on the east side of town concentrating on Amarillo Boulevard. Not the best part of town but then not as bad as most cities. Maybe try
Thai House (5601 E Amarillo Blvd.)
Larger, better known, more central places include
My Thai (2029 Coulter) (My #1)
Thai Arawan (2834 Wolflin Ave.)
King and I (2300 Bell)
If your wife eats fish, we have several Japanese style steak houses that have sushi.
Kabuki on I-40 may be tops there.
I might suggest Biti Pies for a treat. They only sell individual size pies and cakes. No coffee or drinks. Several locations, main store at 604 S. Maryland. The pies are pretty good.
Will keep thinking on this. Good luck and have a great stay.
San Francisco large chinese banquet
I am in San Francisco occasionally when I get off the ship. Will have that occasion next week in fact! Anyway, was introduced to the Empress of China Restaurant (http://empressofchinasf.com/) some years back. Sounds like what you are looking for to me. Best of luck.
Traveling through Texas on the I-40
Never been to the Dakotas but have been thinking that might make a good trip some day. Will keep it in mind, looks good.
By the way, what I thought I had written was "make up for average food" but reread it after time had expired to edit it. Hope your trip is a great one!
Traveling through Texas on the I-40
I have tried Boot Hill twice now. Wish I had better things to say. Randy’s has closed and don’t think reopened anywhere.
If you’re staying in Amarillo over night would say either Country Barn on West side or Big Texan on East side. I know, I know locals always pan both places, but I have driven I-40 from Tennessee to California, and both are more interesting than 90 % of the places I found. And people who pass through and review for Yelp and such seem to like both places. If you pass through Amarillo for lunch or early supper maybe Coyote Bluff Café on East side (2417 S Grand St) not far off highway. Burgers some steak, cash only I think. Go bunless for the celiac.
Great food? Naaa, but sometimes fun stops on a road trip make for average food.
Amarillo Vegetarian
Well, your Monday deadline has long come and gone with me out to sea, but in reply my first thought is send her to Calico County. It is a down home southern style restaurant that does have a vegetarian option and a local ambiance. Sorry for the late reply but might help someone in the future.
Dinner in Amarillo
Not sure when you plan to be in Amarillo but things change a lot. I try to keep up but am not at home at the moment, been out to sea for a month and half.
First, Randy’s has closed recently. There is a new wine bar / restaurant downtown that I have heard is good. Also, a long time standard, Harrigan’s that closed a few years ago was to reopen, as a new steak house under the same company, may be open when you get there. Just check first.
One idea might be to drive from your hotel towards 6th street. Some of the places there may be a bit scary looking, but might be appealing after a long drive. One place for burgers open at night (I think) is the Golden Light Café. Very laid back and sometimes loud, depends on night. If nothing suites your mood and you make it downtown, OHMS is good and one of our upscale places. Not a bad place to relax and have a glass of wine either, then the new wine bar is downtown also. I will be checking it out as soon as I get home.
You will see the Country Barn close to your hotel, it has been mentioned here and is local at least, is a BBQ / Steak place. Big Texan is way other side of town and you will see that as you drive on East. Happy trails and eats!
Best Steak in Amarillo?
As I am in and out of Amarillo (my home city) I cannot guarantee the place will be open but Outlaws Supper Club (Steak House) 10816 E 3rd has a big “Best Steak” following. Bit hard to find and might be a bit hard to walk into for some, but a Chowhound seeking a good steak should have no problem.
Easier to find would be the Country Barn, on the West side of town on I-40. Looks like a tourist place but has been in Amarillo a long time, though they recently (4-5 years) moved to the highway location.
Some people claim David’s Steak and Seafood has the best steak (2721 Virginia Circle). Also been around a long time.
Lots of folks do go to the chains and they are consistent.
Interstate 40 TX to TN
Last note on the trip.
Got to Watermark before we left. Nice place though the view of downtown was not as good as I had hoped from our table. Food was first-rate with some interesting adaptations using Southern ingredients. Enjoyable dinner, very good service and I might add the Grit Soufflé was outstanding.
Interstate 40 TX to TN
First note from the trip. We stopped at Wiederkehr's Weinkeller Restaurant on Tuesday evening. Might as well say now I am traveling with my Mother and it was her birthday (7? best not say.) Wonderful place, good food, not bad wine either, GREAT stop for the occasion. To add to that it slowed us down on the highway. If we had kept going, we would have run straight into the storms that evening. Thank you for the suggestion! I hope the rest of the trip goes so well. Also got to Neely’s next day noon. Always love good BBQ.
Amarillo Texas...Looking for Fielders.
OK, I know this is a late reply but . . .
There is a place in Canyon (about 20 miles, where WTSU is located) called Feldman’s Wrong Way Diner.
http://www.feldmansdiner.com/
Went there tonight and they have Homemade Peach Cobbler. Could be the place, Ya think?
Looking for BBQ Delivery in Amarillo
A quick look in the local Amarillo phone book produced one BBQ place that says they deliver.
Cattle Call Express 800-658-6097 www.cattlecall.com
The Express location is a fast food style outlet for the main restaurant. Cattle Call has been around for a good amount of time and I have been there, though it has been a while. If I were shut in and in need of a BBQ fix, I would have no problems calling them.
I know there is a service here that picks up and delivers food from restaurants, but seem not to be finding the number off hand. Wanted to get this info back to you. If I find it, I will post it also. Good luck and hope it lifts your Uncle’s spirits.
Interstate 40 TX to TN
Certainly appreciate the input so far, am looking forward to numerous stops. If things go well in Nashville, we may want to celebrate a little before heading home. Have been looking and feel two options would be the Watermark Restaurant and Margot Café & Bar. Sound like both are good, any preferences there?
Interstate 40 TX to TN
Will be driving along Interstate 40, from Amarillo, TX to Nashville, TN and back in February. Am sure there must be some interesting finds along the way. Figure at least one lunch in Memphis. Will also be in Nashville for a few days. Any chowhound, snackhound or out of the ordinary food find ideas?
Thanks,
Wes
Amarillo to St. Louis - Leg 3 of Cross Country
Been giving this some thought. There is a burger place called the Coyote Bluff Café (2417 S. Grand, 11:00-2 & 5:00-10:00) that is just off of I-40 on the east side of town. Would be easy to get to as it is just a few blocks south on your side of the highway. Is not fast food and might be crowded somewhat but is different. Burgers are good, fries also. Half pound patties from $5.50 or so to maybe $7.00 depending on your choice. Green Chili Cheese, Spicy Tex Burger, Chili Burger that type stuff. Also have a few steaks on the menu if you are looking for a splurge. Parking lot is a bit stark with no shade, building does not look like much either. They do make take out orders so that could be an option with the dog. Is a good “local color” type place. Hope that helps.
Spaghetti Squash
I often wonder if calling spaghetti squash, “spaghetti” is so great. But it is, and some people do use it in place of pasta, just keep in mind it will not absorb the sauce. For myself I use it as a vegetable side dish, and season it accordingly. If you want to add a sweet touch to the meal it can be sweetened, adding complementing herbs is a great idea and it is nice just seasoned and served. It adds a great contrasting texture to almost any plate. Let me congratulate you on having a son who is willing to experiment with new foods and suggest in this case you serve it in a way you think will lead him to enjoy his new find, maybe a little sugar, honey or maple syrup. And let him play with his food, they are kind of fun to shred.
Amarillo this Friday night--help!
Glad to hear. Hope the canyon and play were all you hoped too.
