Any Estonian Restaurants in Los Angeles Area

Thanks a lot! I will.

Any Estonian Restaurants in Los Angeles Area

My friend moved to LA from Estonia about 2 years ago and said she doesn't think there
is a single Estonian restaurant in the area. I haven't been able to find anything either.

Any suggestions?

Where can I buy rennet for making cheese locally?

The Silverlake Cheese Shop carries it too. I just got some tablets there a couple weeks ago.

Good restaurants that make you sad because they're empty all the time

The Rainbow at lunch is always empty! A friend and I have business lunches there all the time because it's like a private dining room. Steak sandwichs with melted provolone, nice salads, pizza, of course, house made sausages dunked in marinara and my favorite chicken soup in town. At that time a day, the service is fast and friendly too.

Bar that serves Three Philosophers? Long Beach and surrounds

That is a great beer, as is most everything that comes out of Ommegang. I would give Naja's in Redondo Beach a ring. They have about 80 taps of quality beer and would be likely to have Three Philosophers on tap if anyone does.

What are the Best Craft Beer bars in the LA area

Hi EK,

The Chicken Scallopini covered in porcini mushrooms and blueberries is great. The "Burger #2" with short ribs is tasty. The Buffalo Dip appetizer is impossibly rich, but great to share. I also like the understated fish and chips and the cheese plate is a steal at 9 bucks. The owner Brian used to work at a steakhouse and I think they do a solid filet too. A little salty, but then again...beer, beer, beer. :)

What are the Best Craft Beer bars in the LA area

If you're looking for the best selection of craft beer, Blue Palms and Verdugo top the list, with Blue Palms being my favorite because their food is underrated for the price. Verdugo doesn't serve food, but the taps and vibe are great.

Everyplace else mentioned already is fantastic for a food/beer combo. Also, if you're a real beer nut like me, making a trip down to Redondo Beach dive bar Naja's is spectacular. About 80 taps and most of them are well selected craft/import.

Wolfgang's Steakhouse - Poor service, food quality mediocre at best.

Ah, my biggest culinary pet peeve of all time. If something has onions in it, but it doesn't say that on the menu, I have to send it back 100% of the time. Grrrrr.

Growlers: does anyone use them in LA?

Wow! Having trouble with a typo edit. Might have it now. Sorry!

Growlers: does anyone use them in LA?

My experience with growlers in CA (I have purchased hundreds of them over the last 13 years or so) is that you get them from the brewery, not a beer retailer, and they have to be labeled as such. I have Stone growlers, Russian River growlers, AleSmith, Green Flash, Bruery, Ballast Point, and on and on.

What's the advantage of getting them? Well, the biggest advantage to me is that breweries often (almost always) have beers on tap that they don't bottle. So, if you want to have, say a Pizza Port Sticky Stout or an Alpine Tuatara in the comfort of your home, the only way you can make that happen is to purchase a growler.

Umami burger Silverlake / Los Feliz, why all the negativity?

Thinking back on the many negative Umami Burger service issues I've read, it seems like most (not all) complaints have been directed at the La Brea location.

Real Calzones

Second Damiano's. It's loaded with both Ricotta and Mozzarella and you can get any of about thirty ingredients in it too. The calzone and the steamed clams are my two favorite things on the menu there.

Fun weird restaurants in LA?

Ah ha! Thanks for the info. Golden State is great.

Fun weird restaurants in LA?

Wow. I guess I have driven past this place tens of thousands of times over the years and never seen it, never heard of it and never heard of someone going. I live right down the street and it's been there since 1993!!! Crazy.

Damiano's Mr. Pizza - Late night love

I too love Damiano's Pizza. But, the thing that really blows my mind is that at 3:00am you don't always have to get pizza. I've been tipsy (ok, smashed) at 3:00am and ordered up huge steamed clams in lemon butter, stuffed artichokes, chicken cannelloni, even those weird fugazzettas. To the drunken gourmand, it's like a miracle. An expensive miracle, but hey.

Restaurant Suggestions for 18th Birthday Celebration

Baby Blues BBQ in Weho maybe?

Anyone had the burgers at Stout yet?

You have a point. Additionally, there's Boho, which still pretty good and they are 2 blocks away (also with great beer). And, just a short walk away, the burgers at Blue Palms are good (especially that one with short ribs and mushrooms) and they have the best beer selection in town. Gonna have to get creative, Stout!!

Anyone had the burgers at Stout yet?

I went last night and it was crowded enough to where my date and I decided to come back another time. The beer taps looked good, so I was just wondering if anyone has eaten there yet. Thanks!

Gary Danko review

I need to go back to Gary Danko. I went about 18 months ago with six people. Four, including myself, were serious beer aficionados and the other two were actual brewers. Their beer selection was somewhere way below my local bowling alley. It killed the evening. But, now I know and I'd like to go back. That cheese cart was pretty impressive and I had some venison that was superb.

Oktoberfest is a scam - Next year, you're forewarned: caveat emptor!

I went to the ones at Sony and Paramount. The Sony one was good, the Paramount one was fantastic. I had two friends pay 120 bucks to go to this one downtown. They waited 2.5 hours to get in and left after 5 minutes, feeling totally robbed and swindled. Bummer for the beer scene and eff the organizers.

First Peak: New England Style Seafood Shack Finally Available in LA: BP Oysterette in Santa Monica

This place looks like a "must try" for me, just to get some grilled oysters. Nice selection, although I wish some fried full-belly clams were on the menu. Thanks for the tip!

Stuffed Artichoke in Los Angeles...

Damiano's does a stuffed artichoke - stuffed with garlic, breadcrumbs, butter, black olives and cheese. I can't comment on the quality of it, because it's the only one I've ever had, but it's usually pretty tasty when it's not too greasy.

I love the Ralphs on 3rd & La Brea

Another cheers for Ralph's here, this time on Wilshire and Hauser. Great staff, great produce and fantastic meat. They do have a beer buyer that clearly doesn't drink or like beer. But, beyond that, it's solid and they continue to improve it.

Anything new around Hollywood and Highland in past year?

I second Blue Palms. Beer destination #1, but most of the food is great. The fish and chips are nice, the filet is great, the blackened tofu and grilled veggies are yummy. I love it!

If I could only choose 1 place in LA to eat it would be......: : :

I think the obvious answer would be The Bazaar. It's a win-win. If you love it, you love it, and if you hate it, you'll have something interesting to talk about for years on end.

Although I like the Langer's suggestion.

Can I Find Birch Syrup In Los Angeles?

Thanks! I was unaware of Nicole's. I'll check them out and look closer next time I go to Surfas..

Can I Find Birch Syrup In Los Angeles?

I've been buying birch syrup online since about 2000. I really love it's sweet/bitter/spicy flavor. It finally occurred to me today to ask on Chowhound, is there anywhere I can get it locally, rather than through the mail?

Thanks!

You're right. The fact that he was insulted by that comment proves his English is not that good. That's a shame.

Is It Alright To Ask For Substitutions on the Kogi Truck?

I went to a Kogi Truck, just off Wilshire, on Thursday with a friend. I don't like onions (they make me sick, actually, which bums me out) so I ordered the pineapple/jalapeno french toast special. They were out of the french toast and everything on the entire menu has onions in it. So, I just ordered a short rib taco and a spicy pork taco because I was hungry.

Now, not a big deal because the tacos were cheap and the meat was delicious, but I couldn't eat the onions. I got weary of trying to pick them off and did a poor job of eating around them so I got sick for the entire rest of the day. A somewhat dopey move on my part, I'm aware.

Anyhow, I just want to ask, do they do substitutions? The line is very long, people get impatient, the truck guys are focused and I've been conditioned by Father's Office to not ask. All I want is a taco or burrito or Blackjack quesadilla with no onions.

Dinner Near Cedars-Sinai (West Hollywood)

3rd Stop, right across third street from Cedars, might be a nice option. They used to be a big beer destination, but their selection took a huge dive, so no one I know goes anymore. Having said that, they always had solid food. Crispy, thin pizzas, nice moule frites, some great pasta dishes and pretty friendly service.
