Visiting Houston

Hi all!
I'll be in town next week for a conference and would like some rec's for can't miss restaurants, food trucks, etc.
I'm staying in the downtown area and would prefer things that are close by (either an inexpensive cab ride or a short walk). I'm open as far as type of food and $ are concerned.

Thank you!

Matunuck, RI and surrounding areas

Hi all,
I am looking for a good clam shack or casual seafood restaurant in/around Matunuck RI. Any and all suggestions would be great!

Lincoln, NH/Loon Mountain

Hi everyone,
I have booked our annual family reunion at Loon this August. We usually go out to dinner or lunch once. This year, there will be about 20-25 of us. Can you recommend any nice but not overly pricey (about 10-20 per entree?) restaurants in the area?

Thank you!

Yogurt question

Hi all,
My mom had made her own yogurt for over 40 years now. The last batch she made though developed a pinkish/red tint (mold?) on top.
Does anyone know why this happened and whats wrong with it?

Thanks!!

Barramundi

I bought a pound of barramundi fillets yesterday (i'd never seen nor heard of it before). Any ideas on how to cook it? I was thinking roasting or pan frying (can't use the grill unfortunately).

Thank you!

Tomato Bisque

I'm really craving a good bowl of tomato bisque (despite the 100+ temps in Boston). Any good recipes out there?

Thanks in advance!!

Thank you so much!!

Need restaurant suggestions (Central PHX)

Hi! I will be visiting Phoenix for a conference in mid-July and will be staying at the Squaw Pointe Hilton. I'm looking for some interesting/unusual or just fun places to get dinner near the hotel. I wont have a car so I would need something within walking distance or accessible by a cheap cab ride. I'm up for anything and would prefer that it be moderatly priced.

Thanks so much!!

Rice cooker: avoiding crust

I know this is what you are trying NOT to achieve, but when i'm making persian rice in my rice cooker, i press the Cook button several times to achieve an even crustier, golden brown and crusty rice. Yummy!!

Elmont, NY

Hi everyone,
My husband and I will be visiting family in the Elmont, NY area and would love to try some great restaurants or diners.

Any suggestions? We'd prefer places that are inexpensive to moderate.

Also, extra thanks for any great BBQ or fried chicken places!!

Thanks so much!

Mother-in-Law's tongue pasta

what about a light pea sauce (or pesto) thinned out with some cream?

Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day - Review

I made the basic boule recipe this past weekend and baked two boules from it. while the bread tasted great (i may use a bit more salt next time), the boules did not rise much in the oven! i ended up with two grapefruit/small melon sized bread boules. is this correct? i followed the recipe exactly! i had assumed they would rise even more.

leg of lamb...cooking time/temp?

I'll be making leg of lamb on sunday to celebrate Mother's Day. I'm going to either buy a 4-5lb boneless leg of lamb or a semi-boned leg which weighs approximately the same. How long and at what temp should i cook it for to get med. well results?

Thank you!

Mother's Day Lunch Menu

My husband and I are having our families (7 of us total) to our house on Sunday for a Mother's Day Lunch. I was thinking of serving a roasted leg of lamb with some roasted asparagus but I need some more sides/carbs, etc.
Any and all ideas would be much appreciated!!

Arroz con Pollo

Anyone have any recipes for Arroz con Pollo? I had a great one the other day. It was a yellow rice with shredded chicken, some sort of diced up sausage (maybe chorizo?), peas, carrots and I THINK maybe some diced up tomato.

Any ideas? Thanks!

El Penol in East Boston [Recipe Request Moved from Boston Area Board]

Hi everyone! I was at a lunch that was catered by El Penol yesterday. I had the most unbelievable amazing rice dish. It was yellow rice mixed with shredded chicken, peas, carrots and somekind of dried sausage (maybe Chorizo?). Does anyone have a recipe so that i can recreate this at home?

Thank you!!

Persian Pizza? [moved from San Francisco Bay Area, board

Oh my gosh!! I am so trying this recipe this week or this weekend. The Tahdig is indeed the best part of any meal. My sister and I still fight over the tahdig at my mom's house.

Goji Berries

I believe Goji berries are the same thing as persian/iranian "Zereshk". Steam/cook up some white rice. in a saute pan melt some butter, and add zereshk (1/3 cup for every 2 cups rice) along with a tablespoon of water and 2-3 tablespoons of sugar. saute for a few minutes and add to top of rice. serve with braised or roasted chicken!!

How do you make your burgers?

My favorite way to make burgers are to use 85 or 90% lean hamburger, add 2 egg yolks for every pound of meat used. add salt and pepper and shape into patties. put a tiny pat of butter in the middle of each burger and cover back up so its in the middle.
YUMMY!!!!

Looking for a brunch idea

Thank you!! I was hoping for a brunch buffet that also served eggs, omletts, etc. for my husband. I heard that Aujourd'hui serves Sushi as well as traditional brunch-ey foods. Anyone been?

RW: Union, Gaslight (and Camino Real)

What is the RW menu? My husband and I will be celebrating our 1st anniversay at Gaslight on Saturday night so I am trying to learn as much as I can about it!

Sunday Dim Sum in Chinatown?

I like China Pearl. I'm actually going there on Saturday for dim sum.

Chopsticks and placemats

Hi everyone,
I need to buy chopsticks (about 200 pairs) and paper chinese placemats (the ones with zodiac symbols on them-about 100) for an event we are having at my work.
Does anyone know where I could get these? I can't order them online because it would take long to get here (my budget is not large enough to include express/overnight shipping).

Any help would be appreciated!

Looking for a brunch idea

I'm looking for a sunday brunch (preferably a buffet) place in/around Boston that also serves sushi. Are there any around?

Thanks!!

Baked Risotto?

Thanks everyone for your replies!! The reason I want to bake vs. use the stove-top is that I will have my stove-top full (and two of my 4 burners dont work).
I'm planning on using Arborio rice. I suppose my thought process was that if it works well as a paella...why not a risotto. I know its not going to be as good as the real thing, but we will see!

Thanks again! I'll write up a report Wed. night!
