Another Birthday, More Restaurants, and a Scheduling Problem -- Saturday Brunch/Lunch?
Russell House Tavern in Harvard Square has brunch on Saturday. I've been there once, about a year ago. I remember it being quite tasty, with a nice atmosphere and excellent service.

Can You Read Your Menu?
That's hysterical, Barbara! Like a scene from a movie!
Most people would just grab the closest liquid at hand. Unlike Hunt, I'm not sure I'd think to grab the water instead of the wine in an actual emergency.
Can You Read Your Menu?
Da Vinci is a Boston restaurant with menus that light up from behind. It's cool and rather distracting, like when people text in movie theaters. But you can read your menu!
April openings and closings
I'm pretty sure the B&D Deli space has been empty for the 5 years I've lived in Washington Square. Sad.
Anybody know what's going into the former smokehouse next to American Craft? The door has an open circle logo and says "Restaurant & Bar" but no signage is up yet.
What does one do with stale, day-old donuts? [moved from General Topics]
I saw that Michael Chiarello episode. Slightly nauseating. And I love donuts!!
What does one do with stale, day-old donuts? [moved from General Topics]
8 seconds in the microwave is what we used to do with day-old Krispy Kremes, imported from out of state.
i top my pancakes with...
Sweet Chai maple syrup with ginger and cardamom (http://infusedmaple.com/sweet_chai.html). But sparingly, since this stuff is impossible to find locally. I got my bottle in Vermont.
High Protein/Low Fat/Low Cal Protein Snacks?
Smoked salmon on "crackers" of thick-cut cucumbers. Cukes work well as cracker replacement for savory spreads (tapenade, hummus, etc.)
February 2010 Openings and Closings
Brookline's Jae's Cafe on Beacon Street at St. Paul has closed and will reopen in March as Buddhachen:

Family Dinner Ideas Post Marathon
Having just run another marathon a month ago, I can agree on the possibility that you might be too exhausted or not otherwise able to handle a steak or a long, drawn-out meal. But if this is not your first marathon, you'll know what you can handle.
I'll have my usual date with a grilled cheese sandwich, french fries, and a chocolate shake immediately after the Boston marathon and will barely be able to eat scrambled eggs later. 26.2 miles is FAR!
Good luck, and enjoy the race!
Favorite ready to eat soups that can be taken to the office for lunch
I frequently add frozen veggies to canned soup. Makes it much more filling.
Olive and Cream Cheese Sandwiches a Baltimore Only Treat?
Thanks, smtucker & placidothecat. I'll start with the basics and then fool around with options.
Still giggling about "population density of the olives." I can see that briny goodness might not be so good in vast quantity.

Olive and Cream Cheese Sandwiches a Baltimore Only Treat?
Never had the pleasure of a cream cheese & olive sandwich. Must. Try. One.
Can any of you fans explain whether the olives are sliced? Are they in circles, or lengthwise? Do they have to be green olives stuffed with pimentos, or would olives stuffed with, say, garlic, or jalapenos, or almonds be acceptable? How about anchovies?
Does the type of cream cheese make a difference (solid vs. whipped)?
What else do I need to know?
Thanks!
Roxy
Hershey's Bar With Creamy Peanut Butter: Something's Going On Here [moved from DC/Baltimore board]
Interesting... might perk up a veggie burger. Will consider it.

I must confess, Sean, I've never played with Liquid Smoke. What else is it good for (on, with, in... pick a preposition)?

Hershey's kisses (or any chocolate on hand) + jar of favorite peanut butter = heaven!
And you can adjust the chocolate/peanut butter ratio as desired...
Dim Sum in Boston
I went to Hei La Moon today (Tuesday). It was very busy - there was a wait at noon and the four of us ended up sharing a table with 2 other groups. Other than 3 of us, not many Caucasians in the restaurant. All the food was quite fresh and hot. Lots of turnover.
My friend Xianming from Shanghai likes this place best, though she might not have been to Windsor (Winsor?). We used to go to China Pearl, but XM prefers Hei La Moon. I'm happy as long as I get those sesame buns with the bean paste. Yummmmmmmm.
Why no good (or any?) French food in Brookline?
Not sure if this would interest you, but the Elephant Walk at St. Mary's Street has a French side of the menu: http://www.elephantwalk.com/index.html
Icky Icarus
I had dinner at Icarus this past Tuesday. No fishy smell, the food was delicious (my DCs had the pork and the bluefish, I had the risotto), and our waiter was excellent! I agree that the peach cobbler was fabulous. Sorry you did not enjoy your meal. FoonFan's advice is good - let management know.
She's Leaving Home
The Boston Globe (www.boston.com) has a Cheat Eats section. I believe it is published on Thursdays, and is also available online. Might give her some good ideas for inexpensive restaurants as well as some recipes.
The food court at Super 88 in Allston (a T ride away) might appeal to her.
Shaw's has decent sushi, both cooked & raw. I eat it a couple times a month and have never had a problem. It's much less expensive than sushi in a restaurant.
You also asked about frozen foods: I recently had some organic frozen Indian food that was on sale at Shaw's (sorry - I can't remember the brand) that was pretty good for prepared food.
Good luck to your daughter (and to you - it was much harder on my parents than on me when I went to college)!
Anything at all near the new convention center?
The two places I can think of within walking distance of the Convention Center are LTK (Legal Test Kitchen: http://www.ltkbarandkitchen.com/site/) and Salvatore's (http://www.salvatoresboston.com/). Both have mixed reviews, but the couple of meals I've had at Salvatore's were fine (and good rolls made of pizza dough!).
There's also a Daily Catch (http://www.dailycatch.com/main.html) by the Moakley Courthouse.
Trying to go BYOB with the groceries
There are so many people here in Boston without cars that in many stores, the baggers are REALLY good about packing backpacks so nothing is poking you on the way home. I think it's because they also walk home with backpacks full of groceries.
"Don't Open That Bag!!!".....because I'll eat the whole thing.
Maybe add some of yankeefan's balsamic glaze....
"Don't Open That Bag!!!".....because I'll eat the whole thing.
Oh, God... chocolate ice cream with balsamic glaze... never had it.
Must. Have. Some. NOW!
Do you make your own glaze?
"Don't Open That Bag!!!".....because I'll eat the whole thing.
And have you noticed that Fritos are one of the few foods that smell and taste *exactly* the same as they did when we were children? Other snacks seems to have changed a bit, but Fritos are the same.
