Central/West Toronto CSA pick-up/delivery
I used Plan B Organics in the past. It is a CSA program. They have a pick-up close to Bloor/Dundas. It looks like they also have a pick-up at Bloor/Islington.
It's been a few years so I can't comment on quality.
Going to St John and Halifax on Disney cruise in June
Are you going to St. John's, Newfoundland, or Saint John, News Brunswick? They are two different cities in two provinces. I thought Disney cruises stop at Saint John, NB.
If you are going to St. John's, NL, then definitely go to Signal Hill if you have time.
Food on VIA (Canadian rail) versus Amtrak (American rail)
Two summers ago, we took VIA from Halifax back to Toronto. We had a sleeper car between Halifax and Montreal. There were two levels of tickets for sleeper. One only includes the sleeper car but does not include the cost of meals, and no access to the special cabin. That's what we had.
We did have access to the same dining car. The menu we got was a limited version of the full menu offered, and we had to pay. There were 3 choices of entree for lunch/dinner. Quality is about your average chain restaurant. Prices are about the same as mid-tier chain restaurants. Nothing to write home about.
However, if you do opt for the Sleeper Plus, you get more options and maybe better food. The price difference between Sleeper and Sleeper Plus was pretty big and we couldn't justify paying so much more for 3 meals.
Anyone know of non-dairy/non-egg (vegan) easter chocolates in Toronto?
Bunner's is making dairy-free vegan chocolate creme eggs. There is a post on their FB page. Everything I've tried there has been fantastic.

Guelph - Gift Certificate
Hi everyone, I am looking to get a gift certificate for family members in Guelph. Amount would be about $100 - 150. It can be restaurants or gourmet stores. Recipients are adventurous so I don't have many constraints. We have done Chartelli's in the past already. Any suggestions?
Where to buy Bento supplies in Brampton/Mississauga area?
No. The parcels were mailed through USPS and the regular Japan mail, rather than FedEx/UPS. In those cases, the package goes through Canada Post. If the value is small, and also depending on the type of products, you probably won't get charged anything.
If anything gets shipped through UPS/FedEx, then UPS/FedEx would always charge brokerage and tax.
Where to buy Bento supplies in Brampton/Mississauga area?
I went around the city looking for bento supplies a couple of years ago. Couldn't find much. And prices are also a bit higher than what I can find online. So I ended up buying a lot of supplies from J-List - http://www.jlist.com/category/819
I also bought various things from reuseit - www.reuseit.com
The cheaper prices offset the shipping and I wasn't charged any duty by customs.
Montgomery's Inn Farmers Market
The Farmers Market at Montgomery's Inn starts in a couple of weeks. This is their second year. Just curious to see if anyone went last year and can comment. This Market is on the right date and at the right time for me to go (Wednesday 3 - 7 pm). So I will check it out regardless but just hoping I can get some feedback from CHer.
Best Eggbread/Challah in Toronto?
Do you find this Lenchner at the same frozen section as the garlic bread and such? I looked for it at my Loblaws but didn't see it. What does the packaging look like?
The Junction and surrounding areas -- Recommend Me Anything
We like the Junction Eatery for a simple dinner or brunch. The food is good but it can be very slow. We also like Buddha Pie for pizza. Or, if we want pizza delivered, then we would order from Kings Slice (Bloor and Indian Road). Never tried Littlefish but a good friend told us they were treated very poorly and walked out. Vesuvios' pizza is ok but not much else there.
We also like the Beet. The food there is great too. My 4yo actually asks to go there sometimes. We go to Delight for the waffle cone and ice cream every week. Sometimes we go to the Junction ice cream if we want a bigger selection. Axis and Aquila both have a nice patio for the summer. The food is Axis is not that great though. Aquila has good ribs.
Used to order Thai from Silk but quality has gone down lately. We haven't tried the new sushi place yet. We have been ordering from Osaka (Bloor and Indian Road) until now. Pho Huong has pretty good pho and bun.
We haven't been to the Fresh & Co. I usually go to No Frills when it's not busy. Otherwise I would drive to Loblaws. I prefer the one by Dundas and Scarlett better than the one at Bloor and Dundas. We also go to Butcher by Nature for organic meat.

GLUTEN FREE DAIRY FREE CAKE! URGENT
Try Bunners. We typically do not go for GF or vegan food. But were surprised by how good it actually was.

Junction Eatery
Finally tried this place as the weather was nice enough for a walk. We had the Junction Burger and the Fried Chicken. The Fried Chicken was very moist with a light, crunchy batter. The burger was slightly pink in the middle and definitely homemade, nicely spiced. The owner was super nice. He talked about expanding the menu to do takeout dinner combos in the spring time.
Will definitely go back again.
ISO Rahier Dumas Cake in west end Toronto
Does anyone know where I can get the Rahier Dumas cake in the west end, e.g. BWV, Roncy, Etobicoke? I know I can get it at Pusateri's or Rahier but I don't want to venture that way.

Need help. What is the Chinese word for _________?
From what I understand, 雪糕 is a Cantonese word and 冰淇淋 is a Mandarin word. They refer to the same thing (ice cream). For instance, this place calls gelato 意大利雪糕

Why do people use Le Creuset? (split from Ontario board)
If you are only referring to the ceramic dishes, then I don't really find a lot of differences from other baking dishes. But, the LC dutch ovens are fantastic. Yes, they are very heavy. I mostly use them on the stove top and it does maintain very even heat over a long period of time, over low heat.
Baby Food Making Device
I am assuming you for puree. Basically everything got steamed and then pureed. I had a Cuisinart Mini-Prep already so I just used that. Any food mill would do as well. You would also need a lot of ice cube trays. My son is four and there were not as many gadgets specifically tailored for making purees four years ago. It's really just puree.
Ottawa - drinks on Friday night
We are going to a family wedding in Ottawa this weekend. Looking for a place in the market where I can meet up with my SIL for a drink on Friday night. We are in our 30s. Place should be casual with good cocktails. Thanks!
Junction Eatery
Are they open for dinner? Everything I walk by around dinner time, it seems to be closed. My neighbour really likes the fried chicken.
ISO Ingredients
I have seen black garlic in Loblaws, Metro, and Sobeys. They are in the produce section.
HELP / IDEAS / ADVICE for feeding a baby!
We took our son on a road trip to Boston and NYC when he was about 10 months old (that was 3 years ago). There were no puree, no mashed food, no jarred food on the whole trip. He just ate off our plate at every restaurant we went to. We just made sure everything was cut small. The only thing he didn't get to try was sushi from Sushi Yasuda in NYC, and steak because it would be too chewy.
So just let him try whatever you're eating.
where can I buy a Poffertjes/Takoyaki/Ebelskiver pan in Toronto?
Did you try the Holland Store on Weston road by the 401?
Where to buy a Kyocera or Benriner mandoline in Toronto?
I bought the regular size Benriner model at William Ashley's kitchenware department. They have always had that every time I went. It was about $30. Not sure if they have the large size.
I agree the hand guard is pretty useless. I usually slice off the tip of my fingernails every time I use the slicer. Kevlar gloves is a good idea.
Back to Toronto After 10 Years
Re the Thai Restaurant in High Park/Junction, that place has been gone for at least 4 years now. It's now the Purple Onion (diner). The three Thai places in the Junction are ok. Not that spectacular.

Eating in Japan while pregnant
I was going to say that. If I was going away just for two weeks, I would risk it and eat the raw fish while I am there. I actually didn't stop eating sushi while I was pregnant. Just less frequent and never at a new place.
Eating in Japan while pregnant
I can't speak to the MSG aspect as I have never really been concerned about myself. But if you do decide to skip raw fish, there are still tons of fantastic eats in Japan. Ramen, street food (crepe, takoyaki), okonomiyaki, donburi, all the cute pastry, fantastic beef, shabu shabu, yakitori, etc. There are so many other options.
As for raw fish, stick with the small fish. Those have lower levels of toxins. Also oshizushi in the Kansai region are often made to cooked or smoked fish. So those could be ok.
Solo diner, late dinner near Galleria
I will be staying at the Westin Galleria for one night in a couple of weeks. Coming from Canada, I plan to hit the mall after work until closing time (even with the same stores, US has better sales, and exchange rate very favourable). Besides the restaurants within the mall, are there good suggestions close by?
My criteria would be:
- can be bar or table dining
- can take a cab if need be, say a 5 minute ride?
- entree around $20 - $25
- no ethnic restaurants as I get that in Toronto, Tex Mex would be one exception (if that actually counts as ethnic)
If I were to eat within the mall, which one should pick? I did a search with "Galleria" as the search phrase and the results are pretty old.
Thanks!
Help me scratch some NOTL wineries off the list?
I agree. We spent 3 days in NOTL last summer (only NOTL, not Beamsville/Vineland). We drove by ourselves for 2 days and joined a tour for 1 day. We only managed to do 3 wineries when we drove, and 4 on the tour but that was all day. Also, you are going to Beamsville as well as NOTL, so you'll probably need to group them to make it more convenient.
Of your list, we tried Stratus, Lailey, Coyotes Run, and Konzelman.
I really liked Stratus for the overall tasting experience. Their Stratus Red and White are both fantastic. We also really like Lailey for the variety they have and pretty good quality wine. So I would say those two.
We are looking to go for a Beamsville/Vineland weekend. And we are definitely going to Tawse, Thirty Bench, Hidden Bench.
Vegan Eats in Bloor W / Junction?
How about Rawlicious? I think the Beet has some vegan options as well. Both on Dundas West.
Grocery and Alcoholic Beverage Stores in Nova Scotia
We just came back from a trip to the NS, PEI, and NL. I tried a few glasses from Jost and Grand Pre (both NS wineries) at restaurants. Honestly I was not too impressed. Jost was alright. But Grand Pre was a bit disappointing. Granted, I did not do any research ahead of time to look into the wineries or the varietals that grow well in NS.
We did like many of the microbrews though. Garrison was our favorite micro-brewery. If your group likes whisky, you should visit the Glen Breton distillery in Cape Breton too.
