anyone know where to buy a bushel of organic tomatoes
I'm reviving this thread because I'm also looking for bushels of organic tomatoes, preferably in the east end of Toronto. (I can't make it to the Duffering Grove market). Thanks!
ISO: File powder
Okay, I visited the SLM this weekend and made note of the shop in the basement that sells file powder. The shop is called "Lively Life".
As another poster has mentioned, The Spice Trader on Queen St. W. also carries it.
ISO: Fine White Wheat Semolina
So I came across a recipe for Cardamom Shortbread that calls for this ingredient, which I have never heard of. Is it a type of flour? Any idea where to get it?
Thanks in advance for your help!
ISO: File powder
You can find File powder at the St. Lawrence Market. I've bought File powder and other items many times. Unfortunately, I've never bothered to note the name of the shop (sorry!). The shop but is located in the basement, towards the east beyond Rube's. The shop carries international products, from spices, canned goods, oils, vinegars, pasta, etc.
Also, have you tried Cajun Corner? Perhaps you can give them all call and ask?
ISO: Pickling Crock for making Sauerkraut?
PAT is a bit out of the way for me, but I will make the trip to check it out.
Thanks, Kagemusha!
ISO: Pickling Crock for making Sauerkraut?
Thanks for the info and links, youdonut. The Big Carrot is a convenient location for me as I live nearby. Though I shop there often for groceries, it never occurred to me to check out their housewares.
I just took a look at the Harsch crock --- it sure looks nifty! Am I right to assume that it comes with its own weight for the top so that I don't need a dinner plate?
ISO: Pickling Crock for making Sauerkraut?
Hello!
Where in Toronto can I find the traditional kind of crock to make sauerkraut? That is, are there any European housewares shops around?
The recipe calls for something ceramic or glass with straight walls that don't taper at the opening. I need to be able to weigh the cabbage down with a plate.
Thanks in advance for your tips!

Red Fife Flour in Toronto?
I was delighted to discover that Red Fife flour is now sold at Bulk Barn (the one at Leslie and Lakeshore, anyway). Even better, it's organic! I can't wait to make my loaf of bread with it tomorrow!
Just thought I'd share the info...
Ramps in any markets yet this year?
By chance, I went to the P.A.T. Korean supermarket at Bloor and Christie today and was pleasantly surprised to find ramps sold there. Reasonably priced at $2.99 per bunch, the ramps were very healthy -- the leaves were green and unbruised though the bulbs were somewhat on the small side. Still, I couldn't resist picking up three bunches.
Yummy Macarons in Toronto
The coconut macaroons at Bonjour Brioche are awesome but I've never seen MACARONS there.
Memories of deep fried McDonald's Apple Pies
I'm not a fan of McD's but must admit I LOVED their fried apple pies. Have you tried Pizza Pizza's apple pie? It's the closest thing I've found to those sold at McD's. Pizza Pizza fries them up when you order so they're extremely mouth-burning hot. Open up the box and let it air out before biting into one.
Here's the link:

Gosh, now I'm craving one...
ISO: Soy Milk Maker
I'm posting this thread on my cousin's behalf. She's looking to buy an automatic soy milk maker with stainless steel parts -- especially the filter and container which holds the milk. No plastic contact with the milk, please.
I imagine the greatest selection can be found in suburban Asian malls like Pacific Mall, Market Village, etc. But, we are located downtown and can't travel too far.
Do you know where we would be able to buy the kind of soy milk machine we seek downtown? We're going to try calling Tap Phone later today but wonder if there are any other places we should try.
Thanks in advance for your help!
cake from T & T
I could be mistaken but I think "Mala" refers to "Malaysian." What you're describing sounds like the "Steamed Malaysian Sponge Cake" often served at dim sum. It's best served warm.
Jean's Vegetarian Kitchen
Drats! Jean's is open only for dinner from 5-10pm, no lunch hours.
Jean's Vegetarian Kitchen
Thanks for the post. By any chance, do you know their business hours? Are they open for lunch on weekdays?
Has anyone made this Hershey's Chocolate Pound Cake?
Calipoutine, hope you see this post!
You say that the Hershey's Black Magic Cake (which I've never made before) can be baked in a bundt pan. What would be the baking time for this? (Hershey's website recommends 30-35 minutes for round pans and 35-40 minutes for rectangular pans.)
Also, when baked in a bundt pan, does the cake remain moist and light? Or, does it turn out like the most bundt cakes which I've found to be quite dense and heavy.
Ed's Real Scoop Opening in Leslieville
Is this the same ERS from the Beach(es)? Their ice cream is pretty good but I wish Greg's (from the Annex) would open up here.
Toasted sandwich maker
Actually, Amazon.com is an intermediary for many dealers, some ship internationally, others don't.
I also have bought some things from the States via Amazon.
However, I just received a message from the dealer who sells the Diablo through Amazon and was told they don't ship internationally. So, as it turns out, it isn't possible to buy the Diablo through Amazon from Canada.
Toasted sandwich maker
Thanks for describing how this is used. But if it's made for sandwich bread (whose slices are square-shaped), then why is it round? What do you do with the bread corners?
Toasted sandwich maker
This looks similar to the Diablo in terms of function/use but the handles look awfully long because it's designed to be used over a campfire. If this is the case, then it would be awkward to use over a stovetop, something the Diablo is designed for.
Toasted sandwich maker
This looks nifty. Now I want one. How do you use it exactly?
I wonder if the Amazon supplier ships to Canada?
Which is better for juicy/moist brisket: crockpot or oven?
I'm making brisket for the first time and don't know which is a better method for cooking it. The crock pot is more convenient but some people say it makes the meat drier. Is this true? Is the oven better at producing juicier meat or does it depend on the cut of the brisket and/or the recipe?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
ISO: Non-Glutinous Black "Forbidden" Rice
Just called Rube's and they say they have the Chinese Forbidden Rice. Yay!
I knew you folks wouldn't fail me! :-)
ISO: Non-Glutinous Black "Forbidden" Rice
Thanks for the suggestion. Is Rube's the shop located in the lower level?
ISO: Non-Glutinous Black "Forbidden" Rice
I have no idea. It never occurred to me that rice would be available only seasonally, though this is a possibility.
ISO: Non-Glutinous Black "Forbidden" Rice
Last summer, I was able to buy sprouted black non-glutinous rice at T&T. The brand was Green Mills. I haven't been able to find any non-glutinous black rice (sprouted or regular) ever since. T&T (and other Asian grocers which I've visited) carry only the glutinous, sticky kind. The labels on the shelves has indicated "Temporarily out of stock" for more than 6 months now. I wrote an email to T&T asking if they plan to restock the Green Mills products but have received no reply.
Hounds, you haven't failed me yet with my food quests. Please tell me if you know where I can get the non-glutinous variety of Chinese Black Rice. Although the Green Mills sprouted kind would be ideal, I'll be happy with non-sprouted.
Thanks in advance!
Making Laksa paste: Candlenut subsitute?
Sam, I figured as much. I could go out and pick up some macadamia but want to save myself an extra shopping trip. I have lots of pine nuts at home and was hoping I could use tem as substitutes.
Any experience with Cuisinox, citychef.ca?
Ditto word-for-word what BruceMcK said about Cuisinox. I own both Cuisinox Elite and All-Clad (3-ply) cookware (sauteuse, saucepans, stock pots, etc.) and find them to be comparable in performance and quality. The significant difference between the two brands is Cuisinox's better price points.
