Flemington - Lookin for a casual inexpensive place, nothing fancy

Meeting a friend Monday for lunch in Flemington. Looking for a place that we can talk and have some privacy, not terribly busy or noisy, casual food, diner food is fine but it has to be decent, not expensive. It can't have all beef. I eat chicken, fish, vegetarian. Nothing fancy. Sandwiches are fine. We want to hang out for a little while and catch up on some things. Don't send me to IHOP, Perkins, Friendly's, McDonalds, or a regular pizza strip mall place. Suggestions please?

Ibby's Falafel Freehold

I ate at Ibby's Sunday for the first time. Their taboulleh and hummus was ok, nothing special, I make better. The baba ganoush was bitter. Their falafel was good but nothing special, they need to improve their sauce, cut back on the lettuce in their sandwich. Their nomura, (galaktoboureko) was excellent. All their desserts are made on premise. Though I didn't think the food was outstanding, it was all fresh and the owners were friendly. I'm looking for food to pop in my mouth and for me to say wow, this is good. I didn't get that when I ate there. I would not recommend Ibby's for the taste of their food, only for the healthiness of their food.

Sabrina's Pizza in East Windsor, NJ

The place has no name other than Amarone's. Amarone's the restaurant owns the building, including the restaurant business and also has dancing 3 nights a week. The pizza place is run separately but under the name Amarone's. He's a one man operation and is closed Sundays and Mondays. Lunch Tues to Fri, large pie is $8, after that it's $12. You will be blown out by the pizza. Don't ask for anything special, just ask for a regular large pie and see what you get. Though it's outstanding, the taste varies each time I go there. I've probably been there close to 8 times. Sometimes a little more cheese, sometimes a little less; sometimes a little more tomato sauce, sometimes a little less; one time he put a little too much pepper in the sauce, he just handfuls the spices in; the crust seems to change just ever so slightly. Google Amarone's for directions. It's 3-5 miles south of the RT 130 East Windsor "Business District" and 1/4 mile west of RT 130, you can see it from the traffic light at 130.

Sabrina's Pizza in East Windsor, NJ

Sabrina's is owned by Capuano but a different family of Capuano, not the same as East Windsor/West Windsor, Clarksville Rd. and Pct Hightstown Rd/RT 571. Sabrina is owned by Sal Capuano who owns Cafe Antonio's on Flock Rd in Hamilton Twp. His pizza is just ok and Sal has an attitude, lies, and charges for a glass of water.

The best pizza in the area is still the pizza place next to Amarone's on Windsor Rd., Windsor. Try it and tell him a guy on a bicycle recommended you. Delorenzo's on Hamilton Ave is ok pie, the Robbinsville location burns their crusts, doesn't care, doesn't take complaints, and if they feel they've sold too many pizzas, they lock the doors. The pizza store next to the Burger King a few doors down from Sabrina's is ok, nothing special.

Sabrina's Pizza in East Windsor, NJ

I haven't tried Sabrina's but the best pizza I've found in the area is next to Amarone's in Windsor. Outstanding. If anyone goes there tell them a guy on a bicycle recommended it, he'll know.

El Sham - middle eastern - Hamilton (Mercer Co) NJ

I can't believe everyone likes this place. It stinks. The place is small, clean, the owner is nice, nice location, but the food is just so so, bland, nothing pops in it. I make better everything than they do in their own kitchen. We went with a coupon and won't go back even with one.

2 for 1 Restaurant coupons

Any buy one get one free offers, don't let them charge you sales tax on the free meal. It violates NJ State Taxation laws. The rule is, if the restaurant is taking the hit, the loss on the free meal, and they are not being reimbursed by the manufacturer, then there is no sale and thus no sales tax on the free meal.

Seven-Layer Cake in Mercer County?

I like Nino's on Quakerbridge Rd. 609-586-3535, Italian People's Bakery stinks, Wegman's is very good. I haven't been to Swiss Bakery Deli since they sold. Eet Gud is ok. Lawrenceville Bakery is expensive.

Pete's Steakhouse Tavern, Hamilton, NJ

How's there pizza? I haven't tried it. I have had their fish and chips and their battered deep fried fish is one of the best though the fish comes in as frozen filets, they do batter it themselves. I know the owner, Rich Tonti, and prefer not to business there because he has low integrity, I don't trust him, and extremely poor customer service that he doesn't back up. Years ago I went to his place on Hamilton Ave, gave my order to the kid at the counter, he seemed confused, I gave it to him 3 times and he said ok, I sat down on the chairs in front of him and 45 minutes later I asked where my order was and he said you didn't give it to me???? I said I came in and gave it to you and he said I didn't understand it. It was simple, fish and chips, one order. What do you think I was doing sitting here? He said he didn't know. I said give that order to me, he said that is going to other people, there are a number of people who came in after you but got their order in before you so it will be 30 minutes before you get yours. So I waited another 30 minutes, then I asked where my order is, he said you didn't tell me you wanted it, you just sat down, so I didn't put it in, again give me that order, I can't, there are other people ahead of you, it will be 30 minutes more, do you want me to put an order in? I said no, I'm leaving, I can't depend upon getting my order 30 minutes from now. I called Rich Tonti three times about this and he said he would call me back each time and find out what went on and he never did. So he lost my business and some others who also didn't want to wait 2 hours to get take out food. Stupid businessman for this reason and other reasons.

Maruca's type pizza in Roosevelt NJ

Stopped at the Roosevelt Deli in Roosevelt NJ, southeast of Hightstown, off of RT 571. Excellent pizza, thin, medium, or thick, however you want it. It has new owners and he and his wife wanted to copy the old Maruca's Pizza on Olden Ave. He mixes the mozzarella cheese with cheddar cheese. Small pie, about 14" is $7.50 and the large, 16" is $9.50.

I love pizza and travel for good pizza, I've to Pepe's and some others in New Haven, been to several places in NYC and Philadelphia, all throughout New Jersey, Trenton, Perth Amboy, Ocean City, East Orange, among other places, and this rates as one of the better pizza.

DeLorenzo Tomato Pie in Robbinsville

Tattoni's use to be Pietro's which use to be Shank's and is the same place as in the Burg. Difference is old man Dominick Tattoni no longer is the cook and he was terrific and very nice. The son is doing the cooking with someone else, he has a partner.

Rich Tonti, the owner, actually President, of Pete's Steak House on Hudson St. sold the Ewing store. I don't think his steak sandwiches are good, they're ok, but his fish and chips are good.

DeLorenzo's on Hudson St., (Gary Amico, owner), always burnt the bottom and they had an attitude problem, like it or don't come back.

I like DeLorenzo's on Hamilton Ave. and Massimo's on Hamilton Ave., though the owner and his 3 sons of Massimo's have an attitude problem also.

Princeton area italian, byo ?

I agree with every restaurant mentioned. Gennaro's on RT 206/State Rd. is excellent. So is Sotto's at 128 Nassau St., this was formerly the Annex.

weekend lunch near Lambertville

1) Lambertville and New Hope are expensive!
2) If you want to eat there, just walk up and down the streets and look at the menus in the windows. Hit all the little side streets in Lambertville as there are many and that's where the better restaurants are.
3) Lot of nice little stores to browse at including Antiques.
4) Not far away is Pennington and Hopewell and there are are a few nice restaurants there.
