Your House restaurant on Capital Blvd in Raleigh closed?

I know many of you 'foodies' out there will think "good riddance" at this news but I'm curious about what happened. No notice, just closed with a sign out front announcing an auction of restaurant equipment.
I never ate anything but breakfast there, but they knew how to make eggs per your order (important!) and their link sausage was the best in Raleigh. Friendly fast service too!
Anyway, I'm disappointed. Anybody hear what caused this tragedy?

Skylight Inn / Ayden, NC...good as ever

Problem is it gets rubbery very quickly- Holden's in Youngsville doesn't have skin anymore and it's excellent.

Dinner at Battistella's

Four of us went down to their new spot in City Market Saturday night. Tried to call for a reservation but were told they don't accept them. ?? I don't really understand the reasons behind accepting/not- maybe somebody can enlighten me.
Went anyway- we were a little concerned about parking but there's a new multilevel parking deck across the street. Very convenient- and it's free at night!
We were able to get seated right away in the main room. Very noisy- deafening, in fact. Almost impossible to carry on a conversation. Most of the noise came from a table of eight, but still.... They need to do something about this- hang tapestries, some sort of sound absorbing material up. The ceilings are high, wouldn't bother anything.
The couple with us both ordered one of the specials, fried Georgia quail w/cole slaw and homemade french fries. We wanted an appetizer of fried oysters, but they had sold out. If a clean plate is any indicator of how they liked their meal, they loved it, 'cause there were nothing but bones remaining. They both said it was delicious.
My wife had blackened NC catfish over shrimp etouffee w/fried green beans. She's always liked etouffee and said the combination of that and catfish was very good. I stuck with my favorite, crawfish etouffee served w/ rice. My selection was excellent, as it always was at their other location by Crabtree mall.
Brian was nice enough to stop by our table for a quick word- it's flattering to be remembered given the number of faces he must see every day.
The dessert menu was tempting, but we we had all had our fill, so we skipped dessert this time.
The total check with a reasonable tip (20+%) came to $125 or so- good value in our opinion. All in all, an enjoyable evening with great cajun food. We'll certainly be back.

Dinner at The Pig

Visited Q Shack in Raleigh at North Hills, had their beef brisket sandwich- excellent!
The Pig should be sued for calling what they serve beef brisket......

Dinner at The Pig

My wife and I drove over for dinner Friday night. Had heard/read good reviews so took a ride. She had the beef brisket dinner with collards and fried okra- I had the pork belly sandwich and potato salad. Tea to drink.
She said the collards were as good as she's ever had- also really liked the okra. However, the brisket was terrible... extremely fatty and gray! Quote from her- "Rudy's (Texas) would never serve meat like this." The fat ran right through the middle of the slices and there was easily as much fat as meat. An aside...you could watch them cut your brisket at Holy Smokes in Garner (now defunct, sob) and they always trimmed that fat away before serving. Color was much better also!
The pork belly was very good- tender and succulent. Overall, though, they ruined the sandwich by putting it on an ice-cold bun. If they don't ever steam their buns, shame on them. If they just didn't steam mine, still shame on them. Potato salad was almost inedible- had some pink runny sauce that the chunks of spuds sat in. Only after taking the potatoes out of the sauce? and mashing them could I get some down.
Best part of the meal was the chocolate cake we took home for later.
In summary, good idea for a restaurant, poor execution. Doubt we'll be back.

Outstanding French cafe (Wilmington, NC)

My wife and I were in Wilmington yesterday aft. and decided to go down to the riverfront for dinner and a drink- checked out some spots on my phone and Le Catalan sounded interesting, so in we went. What a gem this place is! Great wine list, tasty appetizers and authentic (to us) french dishes. Our server took good care of us even though the place was full. Plus the view! We were there to watch the sun set and it couldn't have been a prettier sight. We heartily recommend this cafe and will be back!

Should we eat at The Grove Park Inn? (Asheville)

My wife and I are going to Asheville the end of August and are booked into GPI for a couple of nights. Was wondering if any hounds out there have tried the restaurants at the inn and, if so, are any worth the expense. (Yes, I've heard they're pricey.) Of course, any recs for other spots are welcome.

We've been several times and love the place! Try the Sunday brunch...... link below from Trip Advisor rates Battistella's #1 restaurant in Raleigh. Don't know if I'd go that far, but it's great food.

Holy Smokes Up In Smoke! [Garner, NC]

Had lunch at Holy Smokes today and my worst fears have been realized- they're closing down Feb. 27th. Talked to one of the owners and he said they never were able to get 'over the hump'. It's become one of my favorite lunch places- great beef brisket and pork shoulder. Good sides, too. Seems like every restaurant that's been in there, starting with Gypsy's Shiny Diner, has ended up failing. Must be the location, duh....

Grady's BBQ: Dudley, NC

I can deal with crispy skin, but my experience (Skylight, Holden's) has been that the skin gets soft and slimy pretty quickly. I'll try to visit Grady's when they're busy and try to get some crispy.

Restaurant advice in downtown Raleigh

Can't let this statement 'the food is second to none in the area (as far as Q goes)' go unchallenged. Cooper's and Holy Smokes both blow The Pit away if you're talking about food- if you you want high-priced BBQ in a faux 'Food Channel' atmosphere, by all means 'HIT THE PIT'.

Restaurant advice in downtown Raleigh

I agree w/your assessment of The Pit- barely mediocre 'Q, indifferent service, way overpriced. A perfect recipe for a tourist trap. Locals are tired of the place.

Great Pizza in North Raleigh

Pizza Italia has great NY style pizza- Pulcinella's on Falls of Neuse is very good also....

The Pit now opened in Downtown Raleigh for BBQ!

If you want brisket you’ve got to hit Holy Smokes in Garner- it’s in the old Gypsy’s Shiny Diner on Tryon Rd. Not big on atmosphere, but it’s BBQ! Their brisket (and most everything else on the menu) will knock your socks off. Reasonably priced, too.

Triangle NC area Top 5

That's OK- you oughta try these spots....here's what I like about them:
Cloos'- best chili cheese fries and patty melts.
Oakwood Cafe- very good Cuban & Argentinean dishes...try the Ropa Vieja w/plantains as a side!
Battistella's- best gumbo I've ever had..and they've got beignets and chicory coffee for dessert.
Pizza Italia- Authentic NY pizza by the slice and a great philly steak.
Stephenson's- Eastern NC 'que cooked over wood...'nuf said.
Enjoy!

O'Hare Airport to Peoria

My wife, daughter and I are driving from ORD to Peoria, leaving ORD around 7-7:30 pm. Any recs for dinner along I-80, then I-180 and down Rt. 29? We're traveling on a Tuesday, so this maybe limits our choices.....

Cookeville, Tennessee

Try Bobby Q's...... they're at 1070 N. Washington in Cookeville. They specialize in BBQ and catfish. It's a favorite spot for locals. The waitresses are very friendly and helpful. We've eaten there several times- stop whenever we're on our way through. I haven't had anything but their pork bbq..... I figure if that's their name, that's what I'm having. It was very good- they have a couple of different sauces, I think one hot and one sweet. Sides are great, too.

North Carolina BBQ

I'm a big fan of Eastern NC bbq but not with skin in. If the skin would stay crispy I think I'd like it but that's impossible given the moisture in the 'q. So the skin gets slimy and that's where you lose me.

Best cheese steak in the Triangle

You've gotta hit Pizza Italia- little storefront pizza place on Westgate just east of 70...... Pete's Philly Steaks would have you napping in the booth- if they weren't so uncomfortable.

Old Canal Smoke House (Chillicothe, OH)

We had reservations at Atwood House B&B in Chillicothe and ate dinner at Old Canal in spite of the aforementioned review. Our dinners were outstanding! My wife had the lemon pepper sole, creamed corn and a salad. She thought the fish was wonderful, very tasty. She also liked the creamed corn so maligned in the review. I had the beef brisket/bbq chicken with green beans almondine and potato salad. Both of the smoked meats were tender and flavorful- the potato salad had sour cream in it and it was great! The beans were cooked perfectly w/little carrots in them.
We were there on a Friday night (packed) but got a table on the covered patio rather quickly. Had a glass or two of wine and our cheerful server was there to take our order. She was very knowledgeable and efficient, considering the crowd. Check for the two of us- $64 w/tip.
I don't know about the rest of you but it's a great thing to discover good food when you're traveling.....so we rerouted our return trip to stay at the Atwood House again and also dine at Old Canal. Needless to say it was excellent again!
p.s. In addition to Atwood House being a pleasant and clean b&b, their breakfasts are world class! A dish of local blackberries and cream to start, oj and coffee of course, and a freshly prepared omelet w/herbs and sour cream, served with sausage patties, fried tomatoes and biscuits w/apple butter and we could barely walk to the car!
So, fellow chowhounds, consider stopping in Chillicothe, OH at The Atwood House B&B and The Old Canal Smoke House for a great dining experience!
