fish: Trader Joe's, Asian markets, etc.

We're trying to eat more fish and I'm wondering where I can get the best bang-for-buck fish. Is Trader Joe's frozen fish better than fresh supermarket fish? Also, why is the fish at Asian market SOOO cheap? It makes me wonder! I know that going to the fish market is the best bet for fresh fish but I can only do that for special occasions.

Chick Fil A Coming to Northridge!

A Chick Fil A is also opening in Azusa. Whenever they have an opening, they give the first 100 or so customers free chick-fil-a for a year.

looking for "chewy" gelato

Oh wow, that is SUPER taffy-like! I've actually had ice cream in Turkey, but don't remember it being like that.

Perhaps the gelato I'm describing only exists in Italy, which is where I've had it. Maybe they use unpasteurized milk or some other exotic substance that is illegal here in the states.

looking for "chewy" gelato

I actually didn't hear that episode nor have I heard anyone use taffy to describe gelato. I've had mozza's gelato and like it, but it was too melty for me.

looking for "chewy" gelato

i'm looking for gelato with a "chewy" texture. by chewy, i mean gelato that is almost taffy-like when you scoop it out, but not necessarily because it's melting. i've tried bulgarini, al gelato, piccomolo, gelato bar, pazzo, and a few cheap imitation places but haven't found what i'm looking for. maybe it doesn't exist in LA?

Nachos with fresh ingredients?

I'm pregnant and I've got a craving. :)

What I'm envisioning is a huge serving of nachos, topped with all sorts of freshly made ingredients like lots of pico de gallo, guacamole, fresh chips, etc. It doesn't have to be authentic Mexican and I'm OK with chains with this request. The bigger the better.

Trio of starters like at L'Agrume?

We've been in Paris for over a week and had our best meal (lunch) at L'Agrume. Wow, we were blown away by their offerings for a mere 17 euros. Whenever we pay near that much at any other inferior cafe, we always compare it to our L'Agrume experience. The best part is that it is just a short walk from our apartment.

Our favorite part of the meal is that they gave 3 mini starters as their entree. A tiny seafood soup, a little chevre caprese-like salad, and a tiny proscuitto and melon salad. We loved how we were able to sample a number of dishes like this and it actually filled us up.

I'm wondering if there are other comparable restaurants that serve a number of little appetizers like this as part of its entree portion for lunch? Anything under 25 euros would be fine.

what mid-priced restaurant to add to this list?

we are currently in paris and are basically here on a student budget. we're staying in the 13e in an apartment and will be here until the 27th. based on the recommendations on this board, we plan to visit the following (in no particular order)

1) kunitoraya
2) pho banh cuon
3) pho bida vietnam
4) les quartres freres (already visited, thought it was above average, meat kind of dry)
5) la pasta papa (already visited, location was convenient for us)
6) pain et chocolat
7) rose bakery
8) green pizz
9) urfu durum
10) le relais gascon
11) paella guy at the Place Baudoye
12) L'Agrume
13) Le Reminet-- if we can get a thefork.com discount
14) The Moose (visited yesterday to watch the world cup game)

we're going to try for a frenchie reservation, but probably won't get it. for our "splurge" restaurant, we're looking for something, either lunch or dinner, within a 30 to 40 euro/per person range. in addition to great food, we'd love beautiful ambiance and something not too small/cosy. also, something that we can reasonably get a reservation while we're here and something that doesn't require formal dress.

i'm also pregnant, so there are a lot of foods i can't eat (soft cheeses, pate, raw meat, runny eggs, etc) and i've noticed that a lot of the nicer restaurants tend to serve a lot of non-pregnancy friendly foods.

feel free to also comment on our running restaurant list. also, do any of the above mentioned restaurants require reservations?

Last Trip Before Having Kids -- Would Love Your Help In Making It Special

Us, too! We're currently in Paris for our baby moon and five year anniversary. Our french friends balked when we told them that this would be our last major international trip before having little ones. Maybe it's an american thing to "settle down" once kids come into the picture. That, and a mortgage.

Where to stay for cheap eats weekend in LA?

i've found the XLB at mei long village to be very inconsistent. sometimes it's great and sometimes it's sucks. if you have a one shot deal, i'd recommend going to din tai fung. people love to hate din tai fung because it's popular, expensive and crowded. but it's popular, expensive, and crowded for a reason. it's also one of the most popular XLB restaurants in shanghai and taiwan, which is saying something.

i'd also highly recommend getting the beef rolls at 101 noodle express. it's quite possibly my favorite food in all of SGV. i have friends who drive over an hour to eat the stuff. read jonathan gold's review on it and you'll be sold.

when you go to kobawoo house, be sure to order their seafood pancake, too. if you're able to take the metro, kobawoo is right off the red line.

this sounds like a fantastic trip. the restaurants are not in the nicest areas to walk in so if you want to walk some of that food off (to build up your appetite, of course), you can walk around at the pasadena huntington library and gardens, venice beach (when you go to santouka), etc.

dirt cheap eats- less than 8 euros

thanks for the replies! this is very helpful and i plan to make a google map out with all these suggestions, so keep them coming!

just as a clarification-- we have been to paris several times and do not plan on visiting tourist sites. we have enjoyed some great meals in the past and i have a growing list of restaurants we look forward to visiting (thanks to the past threads on this board). however, we cannot afford to eat like that for all 60+ meals. i do hope to cook some (we're looking for an apartment swap) but we will probably also rely upon some cheap eats out to tie us over until the next french meal to look forward to, esp since we plan to be out everyday. i love the ethnic eatery suggestions. we live in los angeles and the ethnic food here is our favorite.

dirt cheap eats- less than 8 euros

we're traveling to paris this july for 3 weeks and i was wondering what some dirt cheap eating options are. we do plan on the occasional respectable french meal, but given our grad student budget, we're also looking for some meal options, aside from boulangerie specials, that are under 8 euros. i'm thinking something along the lines of student dining halls, church basement fundraisers, flunch-like cafeterias, etc. my husband eats copious amounts of food and so the picnic thing can only go so far with him. the last time we went, we ate a lot of falafel, banh mi, and crepes. what else is there?

Good place to eat in Koreatown area

sorry....i don't think there's any kind of filtering system, though i wouldn't be surprised if google implemented something like that soon. i made the map since most of my friends ask for requests based on geographic area (and also as a "must try" note to self).

as for langers...yeah...know, hehe. i think i have a hard time getting over the grease factor (even though my intake of unhealthy food is clearly substantial given my restaurant history).

curry house might be able to accomodate you. there's also a place in los alamitos...on los alamitos boulevard, just south of cerritos ave. (i think that's right). it used to be called jabberwocky java (at least, in the late 90s)
