Dans Le Noir NYC: dining in the dark

"The main reason to come here is to experience what it's like to be blind..." This brings me up short. Why? As they say in theater, what's my motivation? To be curious about what it's like to be blind is one thing, but what motivates people to combine that w/ what ought to be a pleasurable experience, and indeed one that caters to all the senses? I'm mildly perplexed.

Bare Burger (Park Slope)

What do you think of corner burger? I think they're pretty darn good, if not great. my fave burger joints are outside of the slope, however: Farm on Adderley and Hope & Anchor.

Has Pomme de Terre Closed?

That makes sense. People probably just didn't want to hang on Newkirk on the weekdays.

Has Pomme de Terre Closed?

I agree it's a tough location. And yet, wasn't PdT doing well? That's the mystery aspect of this.

Has Pomme de Terre Closed?

This is confusing to me. Is the neighborhood really crying out for a gastropub? That genre can do very well, but I'm not sure D. Park has the demographic for it. But perhaps the owner has identified an unmet need - I simply don't know.

Cafe on Clinton closed?

Agreed. Once Barry sold the place, it started going downhill & I stopped going.

Paninoteca on Smith Street

Does anyone know the story on this? I thought they were doing well. Bummer.

Ferroquina Bisleri?

Haven't seen it but I'm certainly curious. Anything that tastes like Fernet *must* be a tonic - why else would it taste like that?

Wine bars in Bed-stuy or Bushwick?

Are there any wine bars in Bed-Stuy or Bushwick, or for that matter in Clinton Hill. I.e. east of the Fort Greene main drag?

Wine bar recs

Vin Noir seems to be closed: called their #, no response.

Alternative to Popovers?

good thought, thanks.

Alternative to Popovers?

Every time my sisters are in town, we end up eating lunch at Popovers, and it's fine, but I'm tired of it. Any alternatives on the UWS? I like the fact that they serve brunch dishes during the week, and my sisters are veggie, but frankly, how many times can one eat there? It's fine, but it's not *that* great. And just a change would be good.

Pomme de Terre, midwood-ish BKLYN; any reports?

Well, on some level it's all Flatbush, or "Victorian Flatbush," if you prefer. I think the other labels are made up by real estate agents.

Pomme de Terre, midwood-ish BKLYN; any reports?

Well, of course there's a long wait - the place just opened and everyone's trying it. Marthaamy, sounds like we had the same meal. I loved the chicken liver pate, good texture & just a bit gamy. Then I had the mushroom ravioli - also great. That plus a nice glass of red. My only 2 gripes: the tables are a bit close together (but it's a compact space after all), and I'd have liked to see more classic French dishes like cassoulet, boeuf bourgignon and the like. But a great place - will return often. And yes, Ditmas Park, or Ditmas Park West if you want to get technical.

Carroll Gardens rut...its a good thing!!!

Something about the shape of the room makes it feel too crowded to me, but they do serve some good things. Like their cheese plate and, if I recall, desserts. I miss Uncle Pho - the whole Indochine thing was cool.

Childhood literary chow memories

Sachertorte is wonderful. My grandmother (German/Jewish) used to make it.

Good tip re Milan's - thx.

There's a new-ish sushi place on 5th next to Perch that I like. Also, had really nice tacos tonight at the taco joint on 5th and 12th. Al di La is terrific, of course. Glad someone mentioned Beast. I particularly love their brunch. Some of the best scrambled eggs I've ever had, and the poached eggs w/ chorizo hash is awesome. Also very fond of the Total Wine Bar. Too bad the Slope lacks: 1) Anything Central or Eastern European, 2) top-tier Italian, 3) Scandinavian.

Gee, Mike - do I detect just a soupcon of the facetious? ;)

Scandinavian style herring?

What about a good Scandinavian sit-down meal in the outer boros? Any thoughts? I miss the old Nyborg Nilsson that used to be in the Citicorp (as it was then known) bldg. I can still taste the red current juice and the gravlax w/ dill sauce.

Childhood literary chow memories

"A difficult day in a Siberian labor camp." Bit redundant, don't you think? ;)

Childhood literary chow memories

I don't remember anything food-wise from the Hobbit and LOTR, but I do remember the expression, meaning someone is pretty smart, "I can see through a brick wall in time." Wish that were current so I could use it.

Carroll Gardens rut...its a good thing!!!

Ferdinando's is terrific, and has a great old-neighborhood feel. Zaytoons is fine, nothing to write home about. Alma, for good-though-pricey Mexican and the view from the roof deck (which I think they heat in winter). Patois has a very fine brunch, at the least. Never had a bad experience at Schnack; the burgers are great as is the ajo sauce, though the hygiene could use brushing up. Panin'oteca makes very good panini as you would expect, and their tomato bread soup is a great winter dish. They also have a terrific collection of Italian aperitifs like Aperol and Fernet. Sample, on Smith, has a good wine list and tapas. Haven't eaten at Chestnut but have heard good things. Coco Roco (sp?) for good Peruvian.

Sad burger at Farm on Adderly

I agree w/ almost everything you say there, adylan. I have few reservations (no pun intended) about the Farm. Very good - sometimes great - food in a casual atmosphere. I do think they might look into serving a different blend of coffee though. Their coffee is good, but Gorilla Coffee is better.

Park Slope egg bfast?

Hope & Anchor is quite good, though of course not in Park Slope. If you can hold out until the weekend, Beast has magnificent scrambled eggs - really some of the best I've ever had. (Not quite in the Slope, but close.)

Sad burger at Farm on Adderly

I've been to the Farm many, many times, and have almost never had anything less than very good, and sometimes great. When the burger is on, it's excellent. However, I would say that's probably the one problem area - though, ironically (in relation to Redgirl's post), I've usually had the opposite problem, that the things are overcooked, not under. I ask for a medium-rare burger, and get a burger that's medium - a very good medium burger, but that's not how I like 'em! They need to fix that.

Park Slope egg bfast?

I'm bummed about 2nd st., though I though their reno was a mistake. Also, i like a good egg bfast, but 2nd is not where I'd go to get one. Their omelettes and scrambled eggs were always kind of hard and dry (maybe they were better w/ the sunny side up). All that said, Perch, on 5th Ave., isn't bad, and they have a great cappuccino. But not ideal, I'll admit, for the egg breakfast.

What up w/ Picket Fence in Ditmas Park

I was there the other night for their beer/burger $12 Tues. night special. Pretty good burger. A good deal overall, so you'd think the place would be at least moderately busy. It was almost deserted. How is this place going to survive, esp. w/ another place opening up (Gary & Allison's new place on Newkirk)? I just want to see more choice in the 'hood.
