Spending a week in Portland, Maine.
Need a brief primer on the scene. Great breakfast places, pizza, and of course seafood. And anything else in between. Moderate prices earn extra points. Thanks.
WHAT IS A CHOWHOUND? CLARIFY, PLEASE [Moved from Boston board]
hadn't thought of that, so true...
WHAT IS A CHOWHOUND? CLARIFY, PLEASE [Moved from Boston board]
It sems to me that the true definition is in finds like Angela's. Places that are off the beaten-track, out of the way, and offering unexpected meals that are both tasty and cheap. Others seem to think that is too narrow a definition. I think it doesnt take much of a hound's nose to go to a well-known, fancy place and "discover" anything. Though not that I have anything against a fancy place. I'm inclined to think that places like Speeds, Taco Lupita, are real chow finds. What do you think?
Pizza Spy tells me Pizza Suprema on 31st. and 8th. is performing
Havent heard much about this place but I'm told the Sicilian slices are rockin. Can anyone confirm?
Best foodie first date in Cambridge?
Bartly's Burgers- A burger, some onion rings, and a lime rickey. Followed by a long digestive stroll through the Harvard Book Store. food and books, mmmmm........
Elephant Walk: do you like it?
stuffy? how so? it is a pretty relaxed place, in my opinion. the loc lac is one of my favorite dishes, period. and i wouldn't consider it a boring dish. the place in cambridge has a very solid kitchen, i dont get your gripes
What ever happened to the JP Pretzel Co.?
Love a great soft pretzel and havent seen the carts around recently. For years, a guy was camped out on the steps of MIT on Mass Ave. Later, he moved on to the steps of the MFA. Any leads?
Speed's Dogs - Marinated or braised?
a warm bath in hard cider does the trick nicely
10th Avenue Freezeout!
wow! someone agrees about Regina's. I'm surprised, given the worship it receives here. I was kidding about CheeseCake Factory. I just assumed it was a given.
10th Avenue Freezeout!
What places have you completely written-off. Forever!
My list includes:
Umbertos on Hanover- Cheap but so what.
Zoes on Beacon- What happen to this place?
El Picante on Mass Ave-
Boca Grande on Mass Ave- THESE THREE ALL MISS THE MARK!
Annas in Porter-
SummerShack- Expensive but so what.
Pizzaria Regina on Thatcher (Duck)- Never got the big deal made about this place, never!
CheeseCake Factory- Just testing to see if you were still awake.
Carberry's on Prospect- Used to be an artisnal bakery, way back when.
Chowish Spots Near Cambridgeside Galleria
pretty decent thai resto across from the mall- Simelians (SP)
2nd excellent time at Benatti (Inman Sq)
i live around the corner and pass by often enough to notice that it is mostly empty. me, i miss the chicken sanwich w/ fried tatters for exactly 5.20. plus tip that O Cantinho used to serve.
Inman Sq. Breakdown.
well, it's not really skewing if the places all are actually in Inman Sq. I love the pizza at Royal Bakery but saying its in Inman is a stretch. I agree w/ you about Jae's. Toward the end it became mediocre. But it had a very good run before that. East Coast is always "good" but it never blows my socks off. At one point, Jae's did.
Inman Sq. Breakdown.
i agree, Slim. i think I meant good not great. or never quite living up to expectations.
Inman Sq. Breakdown.
it's demented that such a terrible place can occupy a corner spot like that for so long
Inman Sq. Breakdown.
City Girl- Cozy spot for dinner or lunch. Great vibe. Meatball sliders, yeah!
Spice and Rice- Thai slop. No thanks
Montien- The same, thank you.
S&S Deli- Only have had their breakfast, and their breakfast is trying.
AllStar Sandwich- Hit or miss, but the gobbler's got legs.
Cristina's Ice Cream- Overrated.
East Coast Grill- See above- Hit or miss, fun can be overrated.
Indian Takeout Place, (on Beacon) - Cheap, swillish.
Indian on Cambridge St & Prospect- Demented.
Ole- Tasty if overpriced.
Olecito- Very fine burrito, cheap, elegant (kidding).
Rosie's Bakery- Cakes for tomorrow baked 4 days ago.
1369- Bittersweet coffee shop/gulag. Dog bagels. And, yeah, I go there too.
MidWest Grill- Wacky, salty, suburban.
Pizza Place on Prospect and Cambridge (Help me here)- not pizza. and not an ironic tribute to pizza either.
Casa Portugal- old worldy, stodgy, bland.
Casal's Bakery- assortment of euro-candies, but a bakery, no!
frankly, I miss Jaes hot and sour soup, not to mention their short ribs lunch box....
Bukowskis (SP?)- Ugh!
Magnolia's- good kitchen, tired menu.
Oleana- tasty, trendy, and just a bit fey...
and speaking of missing: jake and earls, pulled pork, burnt ends, yowsa....
olecita= jake and earls. eat here, die happy!
Trip to Brooklyn for Pizza, Sorry Boston.
Recently went down to Brooklyn for pizza (among other things). Defara's is a madhouse, or perhaps, more like a comic opera. People are actually videotaping Dom make pizza while standing on line. And the lines are long, plan to wait 45 minutes if it's busy. Pizza is pretty good. A notch above Reginas and Santarpios. Also went to Spumoni Garden. This is an old Brooklyn joint worthy of a pilgrimage. Sicilian slices are sublime, not too cheesy, perfect crust. The pies are made in huge, old, well-seasons trays (half a pie is 18 slices.) As for Boston pizza? Much ado about nothing.
LiL Ole, Soft Opening, Tasty Stuff
Just had a steak burrito at Ole's new takeout joint. Very good. In fact, might be the best burrito in town at the moment. And cheap! 5.50 w/ guac. Tortas looked great too. I'll be back soon, if not tomorrow.
Should I sneak into your college's cafeteria for lunch?
It just occured to me that most of the meals "eaten out" in this city (and surrounding environs) are consumed by college students. So, how's the grub nowadays? Which cafeterias (if any) are worth a trip? Now, I'm curious.
Why is Sabra overlooked here?
i'll stick to my guns -- best sandwich -- the chicken shwarma -- in the square. and cheap, too. as good, in my opinion, in its own way as the tacos at lupita. who also use a vertical spit.
Why is Sabra overlooked here?
Seems this nutty little Harvard Sq. place is never mentioned. Great chicken schwarma (sp?) sandwich. Inexpensive, tasty salads. Granted, it's a little off the beaten-track but might be the best sanwich in the Square.
Best bowl of chili
yup, i forgot about the grease. i've no doubt that someone in that kitchen can make great chili but from the comments here, it seems, they're intent on making a very spicy soup instead.
Best bowl of chili
I took a bowl out from ASSBAR over the winter (not on a date) and frankly I think we're talking about two different chilis. Mine was watery, insanely hot, and for good measure, a lime was dumped in it. a real mess.
Mystery Thai????????????
too bad, because the Hut surely could be one of those great dives. a dive hut, kinda...
