Waikiki Cheap Eats?

Just wanted to update this thread and give a recommendation for Goofy Cafe & Dine. It's pretty much across the street from Wailana Coffee House on Ala Moana in a small space on the second floor. I've eaten there twice and really like it. It's Japanese owned with a mostly continental menu.

I enjoyed it very much. It's not super cheap but definitely not expensive.

Veatery on 88/2nd-anyone know why it closed? Also new signage says Vietnaam

I saw a sign that said they were going to renovate. Saigon Grill, formerly of the same venue, had a similar sign :)

Best store bought pickles

I had been buying Ba-Temple dills in the refrigerated section but decided to try the refrigerated Clausen dills. Glad I did. They are surprisingly very good. Crisp and flavorful.

Sports bar/restaurant near 92nd Street Y

The District on 3rd and 94th. And Kinsale Tavern, also on 3rd near 94th, is a bar but they have plenty of tables and good food. Lot's of TV's.

New Neighborhood: 86th Between Lexington & 3rd Ave.

Rathbones, Finnegan's Wake and JG Melon for bar burgers. Bare Burger will be opening soon on 87th and 1st.

Tell her to try the lunch special at the new Au Jus on 1st and 91st. Great slow roasted meats (lamb, pork, beef).

Glaser's Bakery has a great black and white cookie.

Heidi's House (a door or two down from Orwashers) has great food and a nice vibe.

DTUT has reopened in a new location on 2nd around 91st. It's a good place to kill time with a cup of a coffee (when the mommy-and-me stroller patrol isn't in full force).

Cascabel Taqueria for tacos.

Best store bought pickles

I recently bought Guss' at Walmart in FL, of all places. I didn't even realize they were sold retail.

Last time I had a Guss' pickle was straight from the store on Orchard, which closed and moved to Brooklyn.

Au Jus - Upper East Side

You guys need to check out Au Jus (1st ave and 91st). I grabbed the lunch special - sandwich, side and a drink for $7.95. What a great addition to the neighborhood! They specialize in slow roasted meats - beef, lamb, pork. The sandwiches are really flavorful. I had the porchetta. This is unlike anything I've encountered on the UES over the past ten years. It's something you'd typically find in the East Village.

It's just a tiny space with just a few counter seats along the front window. Looks like mostly take-out and catering. This is a pretty off the beaten path spot, so I hope they manage to create a buzz. I'd hate to see them fail.

Waikiki Cheap Eats?

Just walked up Keeaumoku to Michinoku. In the 6+ years I've been coming here, we've stayed at the Ohana East, the Outrigger Reef and the Hilton (the one one with Mac 24/7). I've honestly not ventured over to this end of the "strip" much at all.

We definitely saw some characters walking along Keeaumoku but more than anything, I was impressed by the number of mom-and-pop restaurants; seemingly mostly Japanese and Korean.

I'm looking forward to exploring the area more during future visits.

Waikiki Cheap Eats?

I just stumbled upon the Ala Moana Eggs 'N Things. I wonder if it gets as crowded in the mornings as the Saratoga St. venue?

I had breakfast at Wailana Coffee House. I know it's nothing special but I've always wanted to give it a try.

Any good dive bars near the Ala Moana Hotel? I used to go to Arnold's (under/behind Saratoga Egg's 'n Things) when we stayed at the Outrigger Reef.

Interesting...in the past we've stayed at hotels closer to Moose's. I had the worst Guinness pour in that place that I'd ever seen several years ago and haven't been back. Never knew they serve breakfast.

Yes, still on the UES. But I travel for a living and the subway construction has been keeping me away, too. The 86th Street cavern (which I toured...so cool!) is being blasted under my building.

The Penrose Gastropub-East 83rd Street

Went last night. Great addition to the neighborhood. Lots of good beer on tap. Very nice space and friendly staff. Typical fried gastropub menu; Deep fried sausage, fried chicken, fried pickles, etc. Good amount of bar space too.

Will definitely be back!

I stay at the Fairmont when I'm in town and often walk to Ravi, Al Mallah and Noodle Bowl in Satwa. There are many other restaurants in Satwa that are an equally easy walk.

Any recommendations?

cheese at Fairway - too many strikes to count

Has anyone had success in finding Halloumi at the UES Fairway? The guy behind the cheese counter looked at me like I had seven heads. The deli guy said it was in the Kosher section, but I didn't see it there.
