Fresno area - Closures and Changes

Actually when I was at Ruth's a few months ago the service was very good as was the steak. We had none of the problems mentioned, we were seated in 2 minutes, service was good, etc.

I've been taken to Ruth's elsewhere in the country by clients over the years, Dallas, Vegas, etc. (Clients and Ruth's, do they all share notes on where to take someone?) Had a good meal in Dallas, but the food was bad in Vegas, other cities I've been happy with it..

When I went a few months ago it was my wife's choice. She has never been in one and wanted to see what it was like.

Between Ruths and Flemings I'd still tell someone to go to Ruth's. Flemings is too noisy for my taste.

But we still prefer Chefs Table, Trelio, and other places around town.

Where does a foodie eat in Fresno?

No I didn't.

It was an anniversary dinner so I was more focused on my beautiful wife across the table than on the food. So it would not have been smart to post about it when I was only partially paying attention to the food.

I remember the food was good as was the service, and we are picky about service.

I've eaten in Ruth's on business trips around the country and sometimes have been disappointed with the quality of the food at other locations.

Where does a foodie eat in Fresno?

Its been a few months since I've been there, but didn't Slates add a Tapas menu?

A foodie from Oakhurst (if you haven't already done so) should visit Trelio in Old Town Clovis. Owner Chris Shackelford used to be sommelier at Elderberry House. His brother Mike is in the kitchen.

Personally my wife and I still like to go to Chefs Table. Malachi is still doing a good job in the kitchen.

But I admit we snuck into a chain a few months ago, we tried Ruth's. LOL ;

quote: "Where does a foodie eat in Fresno?" San Francisco. unquote

Why would I go to SF? All the chefs seem to be moving to Fresno. Chef Malachi at Chefs Table came from SF's dining scene; Limon opened here; Chef Liu at Hunan left the Bay Area for Fresno. I might as well save the travel cost and wait for them to come to me. ;)

Javawava across the street from Fresno High at Echo and Weldon has a nice atmosphere.

They have some food like sandwiches.

Javawava also has entertainment like open mic night and many times is a stop on ArtHop.

fresno fruit?

Your post got me thinking of another possibility that some might consider "exotic".

Kirkpatrick Farms near Lindcove/Exeter is the only place in the US growing kosher etrog citrons.

They usually harvest in the summer, just in time to be used for Succot.

But I don't know where you could buy some locally.

SF's Limón opening Fresno location

Today's the opening of Limon-Fresno, unfortunately I can't get there for a few days. :(

But here is a little trivia in honor of Limon's Fresno opening.

Martin Castillo of Limon was named a 2003 Rising Star Chef by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Another 2003 Rising Star Chef was Malachi Harland. Malachi was at XYZ in SF at the time. He later left there to open The Chef's Table in Fresno.

So 2 of the 6 people on the Chron's 2003 list of up and coming chefs now have places in Fresno.

fresno fruit?

The Hmong markets will sell fruits and vegetables that are not well known to many Americans like bitter melon, Thai eggplant, Chinese eggplant, etc.

You might try calling someone like Cherta Farms, they grow in Del Rey but wholesale out of the old Hobbs Parsons building in Fresno near Grizzlies Stadium. They buy from a lot of the Hmong and Laotian growers and could tell you where to buy some exotic items.

Also, call the specialty crop people at the UC Cooperative Extension in Fresno. They work with the small farmers like the Hmong and Laotians. Probably can tell you where they instruct the growers to market their products.

SF's Limón opening Fresno location

This is more for the out of towners, not the Fresno crowd that may already know.

A Fresno location of San Francisco's Limón opens next week (Dec 27th), just in time for a post holiday alternative to turkey. Limón typically makes the SF Chronicle's annual Top 100 list.

The Fresno restaurant will be in the RiverPark area on Blackstone.

Joan Obra's column this morning explains the plans, saying that there are family members in the Fresno area. Ana Castillo, the Limón owners' (Martin and Eduardo) sister, already lives here.

Luz Trigoso, Martin and Eduardo Castillo's mother, will run the Fresno location. So the source of the family's recipes will be here.

Additionally Eduardo Castillo will move to Fresno from the Bay Area.

So more of the Bay Area's best recipes will join the Fresno scene. First Chef Liu at Hunan, now the Castillo family.

Fresno/central Cal - Any restaurants serve roasted goose?

I've seen goose as a holiday special in past years someplace in the area like Trelio or Chefs Table but don't remember where right now.

Are you looking for something special or just a traditional turkey dinner?

First thing that comes to my mind is the ad I saw today. Steak and Anchor restaurant at the Picadilly Inn Airport will have a Turkey Dinner for $17.95 a person. Only served from noon to 5pm on Thursday.

driving from Fresno to Yosemite need good place to eat

I was going to recommend the Mining Company in Coarsegold but I checked and it closed a few weeks ago. Used to do some nice breakfast and dinner.

Nativos at Chukchansi casino is doing some good Italian. We were there for dinner a few weeks ago but haven't tried it for lunch yet.

Both the Fresno and Clovis locations of Fugazzis closed.

I'm hearing rumors about a few other places from real estate people but will wait to see if they come true. Some landlords are renegotiating leases right now.

Wine Tasting in Madera: Ficklin Vineyards and Quady Winery

Many of the people posting may know this already but just thought I'd add it.

The Madera Vintners are doing their Holiday Spirit Weekend on Nov 8 & 9.

Quady will do a vertical tasting of the Starboard ports from 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, & 1996. They will also release the new Visao.

Mexican restaurant south of Fresno?

You are probably right, I just haven't been in either for a while to find out if Karl is still in charge. I can still remember the boys working in the Selma location 25 or 30 years ago.

Mexican restaurant south of Fresno?

Technically Sal's and Bobby Salazar's are different. Then there is Henry Salazar's, another branch off from the family.

Sal's was founded by Sal Salazar, he died in 1980. Son Bobby Salazar had a falling out with other family members and went off on his own. His mother continued to operate the original Sal's in Selma but Eleanor died last year.

Hotel Food Recs for Fresno

I'd just add a couple of more fine dining places not mentioned so far.

We like to have dinner at Chef's Table. Our choice is to take a patio table near the fireplace. The chef used to be at the W in San Francisco.
http://www.chefstablefresno.com

If you stay near Herndon and 41 you might also try Slates which is nearby. Coincidentally it is run by the father of the chef at Chefs Table.

paella in san luis obispo

I've seen paella show up occasionally on menus in the area. But I don't know who might have it as a regular item.

But there is the Pinot and Paella Cook-off north of SLO in Templeton in June. So maybe for an end of the academic year visit?

Thanksgiving Turkey???

I mentioned in another thread to look for the brand "Mary's Turkeys". They are a Fresno area family producing heritage, organic, and free-range turkeys. That would also allow you to support a producer only a couple of hours away from you.
http://www.marysturkeys.com/

They used to only do mail order but now sell through stores instead. The website lists who stocks them. Around the Central Coast it looks to me like you should find Mary's Turkeys at New Frontiers Natural Foods in SLO.

Heritage turkeys grown on the central coast?

I haven't heard of a central coast producer, hopefully someone will.

But if you are open to a little further away, Fresno-based Mary's Turkeys does Heritage, Organic and Free-Range turkeys.

Fine Dining Fresno Area

You should try to go in the near future.

We were amused by the number of people going into Bobby Salazar's 2 doors down. If they only knew what they were missing by not eating at La Paella.

We ate there last month, my wife almost decided she would never make Paella at home again, almost but then she relented.

It was my birthday the night we were there so we finished dinner with a very nice port.

PB, are you thinking of the Camarones al Ajillo?

LA > Seattle

Not 8 hours brutal. ;) That would require traffic to average only about 45 mph. I see traffic moving on highway 99 at 80 mph every day.

LA > Seattle

I have to agree with PolarBear, I don't understand the 8 hours comment.

Fresno to Sacramento via 99 is under 3 hours for me. Fresno to Los Angeles/Orange County via 99 is 3 to 4 hours depending upon the destination.

I checked mapquest.com out of curiousity of its info. It lists Downtown Sacramento to Downtown Los Angeles as 5 hrs 45 mins via I-5 and 6 hrs 14 mins via 99.

Google Maps says 5 hrs 48 mins via I5 and 6 hrs 4 mins via 99.

So about 20-30 minutes more driving time adds a lot more dining choices.
