Best Thai....Please tell me the very best....

Saying you don't like Ayada because of the honky clientele is like saying you don't read Chowhound because of the performance art.

Koshery rocks. Great Cairo street food. You can find it at Mr. Felafel on Seventh Ave. in Park Slope.

Real (and fake) Authentic Sichuan Food in Park Slope!!

I tried the three-pepper chicken lunch special. The chicken was nicely spiced, if somewhat on the greasy side, and delicious. It came with white rice and a forgettable container of won ton soup for $7, including tax. Not a huge bargain but the closest thing to the real deal this side of Metro Cafe in Sunset Park. I'll be back.

Brooklyn Pizza Survey

Pauline & Sharon's is near Red Hook and is definitely worth checking out. Maybe it's the "unbleached, unbromated flour," but their pies have a taste unlike any other in the city. That taste may not be to everyone's, but I love it. Also relatively inexpensive compared to your Roberta's, Paulie Gee's, etc.

Sunset Park Chinatown: "Rice Noodle" Dim Sum From Scratch

The lovely couple's cart has been right in front of the HSBC Bank at 5515 8th Ave. every time I've passed by recently. Just as delicious, just as inexpensive ($1.25-$1.75) as ever.

I don't think Peppe's would have faded quite so quickly if hadn't lost its original piemaster within the first couple of months.

Prosperity Dumpling - Sunset Park

Did a little dumpling taste test between Family Dumpling and Prosperity last weekend, and Family definitely came out ahead that particular afternoon. Family's pork fried tasted much fresher than Prosperity's, and also boasted a refreshing hint of ginger. I'm sure I'll patronize both places in the future, and Prosperity definitely has a friendlier room, but that was my take.

Cheap eats afternoon in Sunset Park C-town

We tried the chicken teriyaki and "triple spice" chicken. The chicken in both dishes was somewhat on the funky side, I'm afraid, and I wouldn't order either of them again. The triple spice chicken, with chilis and peppercorns, was like a beginner's rendition. All the ingredients were there, but the flavors didn't come together into anything greater than the sum of their parts. The squid ball skewer was OK, though.

But if you thought the ma pa dofu was great, I'll have to go back.

Mina's back -- with her A game

I read something recently that indicated that Mina is still cooking in, or at least supervising, the kitchen at Angon on Sixth Street in Manhattan. Anyone have any idea how she's splitting her time between the two joints?

That being asked, I'll also note that I've never had a bad meal at Mina's no matter who's cooking.

Best Jamaican restaurant

Islands is much better for take-out and delivery than eating in -- unless you have a LOT of time on your hands. Our last visit, our food arrived almost exactly ninety minutes after we sat down upstairs. We had plenty of time to watch a steady stream of to-go orders and deliveries preempt us. Major bummer.

Pepe's P & P (Park Slope's Best Pizza...Shhhh...)

They were checking this thread while I was in there for lunch the other day, too. How meta is that? Very, and I'm a little ambivalent about it. Since I already quite enjoy their food as is, I'd hate to have them psyched out by some of these posts and then change it in the interests of pleasing the squeakier wheels. On the other hand, wouldn't it be cool if they joined the fray themselves? I'd personally love to know more about the logistics of operating a pizza parlor in Brooklyn circa now. The arc could evolve into a feedback loop.

Pepe's P & P (Park Slope's Best Pizza...Shhhh...)

Peppe's (with two p's, btw) is immensely better than Pizza by the Park. I haven't had tried the plain slice that seems to have turned a few posters off, but the Peppe and Grandma slices have been delicious, as was a creamy ham calzone. Peppe's ingredients seem fresher and more authentically Italian than most other places. I'd rate it slightly below Lucali's and slightly above Anthony's, with the added bonus of being able to buy a variety of fresh slices, especially at lunchtime.

Oh, and in addition to their mediocre pies, Pizza by the Park lost my biz the day I heard the counterman hectoring his employees about hoping George Bush gets re-elected, "because the other guy wants to send you back to Mexico."

Franny 2 Star

Smiley's slices are actually still only $2 in accord with the historical subway/pizza correlation. And I've had late-night slices there that made me happier than many a tasting menu.

Franny's, however, provides extremely low bang for buck in my experience.

Terrace Bagel - Windsor Terrace

Bagel Hole's bagels aren't *that* little. I couldn't eat two of them, and I'm something of a glutton. But they're definitely a lot tastier and chewier than Windsor Terrace's doughboys.

PS BYOB/Italian

You first.
Even though Scalino is on our corner, the poorly lit, monastic interior; the presence of a "coldcuts" appetizer; and the fact that they use the quaint term "paste" in place of pasta on their menu make me wary.
Spirito on 9th St. between Fourth and Fifth Avenues, however, was a recent pleasant surprise in the Italian department, and we'll definitely go back.
