Where to do lunch for a 90th birthday celebration?

Hello from Boston, Chicago! I will be in Chicago in August celebrating my grandmother's 90th birthday and am looking for someplace special to celebrate for a Saturday lunch. A few challenges:

-we want to stay in the downtown area preferably
-a view of the lake or city would be a plus
-infant-friendly
-not crazy expensive but moderately is ok
-don't want a steakhouse
-nothing too, too dressy (which hopefully wouldn't be a problem for lunch), as a few in the group of 10 don't really know how to dress up
-nothing too exotic menu-wise as 90 yr olds aren't the most adventurous

Any help would be much appreciated as I want my grandmother to enjoy!

dinner with a group on Nantucket

Thank you! I appreciate all the tips. May do a late dinner in the dining room one night at Straight Wharf and do a drink before hand at the White Elephant.

dinner with a group on Nantucket

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could advise me on a few good restaurants on Nantucket to dine at with a group of 10 on a summer weekend. I am looking for one casual, less expensive place and another slightly more upscale place. I have been to The Lobster Trap, Black Eyed Susan's and Bluefin(which I think closed), all of which I enjoyed and would consider revisiting.

Any recent reviews of the Westender and Centre St. Bistro would be appreciated. Thanks!

Latin cuisine in Cambridge?

Really strange, but it appears that there are 2 version of their site up, one with the old menu, latin dancing etc. and the newer one with the new menu. Glad I checked again.

Latin cuisine in Cambridge?

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking Green St. might be good as they have a Latin DJ on Friday's and we were going to go out for some Latin dancing afterwards. But it seems up in the air about the menu changes, huh?

Latin cuisine in Cambridge?

I am looking for a place for a low-key bachelorette party dinner for 6 or 8 people on a Friday night with some sort of Latin food. Any suggestions other than Dali? Thanks!

Nice, but not outstanding meal at Summer Winter in Burlington

I had a nice time and meal at Summer Winter tonight in the Burlington Marriott. A friend of mine and I sat at the oyster bar which was nice and a little less formal than the dining area but removed enough from the bar.

The service was somewhat uncoordinated as our waitress was a little slow throughout our meal but when it came to clearing our dinner plates, they asked us 3 times before we were actually done and let them take our plates. Overall, the service was friendly though.

The drinks were great between the bourbon smash to start and a delicious hot spiced butter rum to finish, that was actually the highlight for me! I did not venture into their wines tonight.

For dinner, I had the baby back ribs which were tasty but I have had better at rib places. The hominy cakes were good on the side and unique and the side of baby bok choy was nice and light.

The ambiance was really nice with slate all around. I will definitely return and test them out again. I am a big fan of MC Perkins Cove in Ogunquit and hope this sister will measure up!

Moody Street Date Recs?

I was at Tempo twice recently, once on a date, and loved it. It may take care of all your needs as it has a great bar as well as great food and is trendy and somewhat romantic. Their ahi tuna was so good and so was their flash fried calamari. Their desserts are to die for. They have this caramel mousse torte which is delicious and very unique. The service is excellent as well. Have fun!

Papa Razzi in Concord? [moved from Boston board]

OK, you are coming out to "the land of no decent resaurants", but, I think you will like it and it is the only chain I like. Their fish specials are consistently good, and I have never been disappointed actually with any of the pastas or pizzas I have had. Have fun.

Buying high quality cheese outside of Formaggio

Ok, everyone is entitled to their opinion on Formaggio, but let's be sensible adults here, do you really have to go to the point of "violently disagreeing" with someone? Remember, we are talking about food here, not the Middle East peace crisis. Take it down a notch!

Buying high quality cheese outside of Formaggio

Well, I agree that a lot of the customers at Formaggio are rude and snobby and that decreases the enjoyment of your visit. They somehow think they have more of a right to be there than you.
I am not sure where you live but if Concord is not too far or you are passing through, try the Cheese Shop in Concord Center. They are helpful, have a much more customer-friendly layout than Formaggio with a low counter where they give everyone a sample of a cheese they take out. Their selection may be somewhat smaller than Formaggio, but the service, the 500 wines they carry as well as a gourmet food counter may make it worth the trade-off.

J's at Nashoba Valley Winery-outstanding brunch!

No, we did not do the tour. But, we were able to taste 5 wines each, for free. This really amounted to about 10 or so each as we shared our tastings.

J's at Nashoba Valley Winery-outstanding brunch!

I had the pleasure of having Sunday brunch at J's in Bolton a few weeks ago. Not only was I blown away by how good it was, the price made it that much more enjoyable.

The setting is gorgeous, we had a window box table and had a view of the vineyard. It is a buffet brunch with the selection changing every time you get up for more! Although there were too many dishes to name them all, the strata and the mussels were great as well as the cheese selection and the peanut-crusted chicken skewers. We had a reservation for 1:30, but there may be more breakfast type dishes earlier in the day. The drinks were fabulous too with bellinis made with their own sparkling wines. The homemade desserts were made with such care and were amazing. And best of all, this all cost $18.50 not including alcoholic beverages. This brunch would have easily cost $50 in the city.

As if that were not enough, we went back to the shop afterwards and tasted a bunch of their wines, beers and spirits. They were surprisingly good, and to finish off the day, you could choose an apple to be fresh-dipped in caramel for $2, something I have always enjoyed.

Now, I want to go back to try their lunch and dinner menus. FYI, it only takes about 45 min. to get their from downtown Boston.

Interesting Hot Alcoholic Drinks—Suggestions?

Try Grendel's Den in Harvard Square, where the cozy environment will match your hot drink!

Belmont Newcomer

I love Taqueria Mexico in Waltham Center on Charles St. It is a hole-in-the-wall with affordable, truly authentic, Mexican food. For lunch, although pricey, try Vicki Lee's in Cushing Square.

thoughts on Osushi at the Westin?

I am considering trying it out, but never like to waste time at an average sushi joint. Freshness is my most important factor.

Early Dinner before a Red SOX Game at Fenway

I vote for Beacon St. Tavern from the choices above. Patio seating, just far enough from Fenway that you are out of the craziness but still a 5 min. walk from Fenway, and excellent food and service.

Mac n' Cheese

Flash's on Stuart St. has excellent mac & cheese. It is super full of flavor although I am not sure it is made with all the ingredients you use!

Waltham--different, but fun for an 11 year-old

Taqueria Mexico is excellent and cheap on Charles St. It is the only authentic Mexican I have ever had in this area. It has outdoor seating as well. Try the tacos or rellenos. It is just off Moody St. close to the top where Moody hits Main. You won't be disappointed and it will not break your bank.

searching for some speciality foods

My favorite place for everything delicious is Fromaggio Kitchen. There is one in Huron Village, Cambridge and the other in the South End. Their cheese selection is the best in the city, and they also have a bakery, gourmet groceries, nuts, produce and beer and wine.

What's new/noteworthy near Loews Boston Common movie theater for dinner?

blu is great on top of the Ritz residence with great service. The bar scene is good there too. Troque is good too if you want something really nice.

Washington Sq. Tavern vs. Beacon St. Tavern

I went to the BST the other night and loved it. Just as good or better than WST if you count the larger space. The ribs, oysters and goat cheese salad were all excellent. We were able to hang outside and drink until 11 pm when Brookline's ordinance kicks in and you have to move inside. Excellent service as well...

Any thoughts on Cuchi Cuchi?

I have only been there once to eat and a few times for drinks. Stick to the drinks, the tapas were terrible. The bar ambiance is fun for a change.
