Good burger in Arboretum area

I second the Hideout. The sliders are really great. If you want to go a bit more upscale, the Roaring Fork bigass burger is just around the corner at the quarry.

Trouble on the East Side? El Regio and La Regiomontana “Temporarily” Closed

Ugh. I hope I caught the Rundberg and 35 Pollo Rico on a bad day. I just grabbed my lunch there and it was categorically awful: burnt, dried bird, stale, torn tortillas, and my beloved green salsa tasted like tinned sardines. Yeeech. My initial impression after the Regio changeover was that the food was identical but today it was truly awful. Proceed with caution!

Trouble on the East Side? El Regio and La Regiomontana “Temporarily” Closed

Zeb, I reckon some of the Regio locations are renaming themselves El Pollo Rico. The Rundberg one had this new name too but I grabbed chow there on Saturday and it was the same tasty goodness as always.

Best Margaritas in Central Austin?

I like the huckleberry ones at the Roaring Fork.

Best Salsa in Austin

Another north-ish Regio's location is in a strip mall just above Rundberg, on the east side of I-35. Look around for a bit if you don't see it right away, I had trouble spotting it the first time I went over there.

Sometimes their breast meat is a bit dry, but aforementioned green salsa will wash your troubles away.

ghandi bazar

Yes! I love the one on Parmer... great frozen naan, packaged spice blends, teas, and a solid selection of pickles and chutney. They also carry paneer, ghee, and fresh herbs and spices that you can't find anywhere else. Enjoy!

What happened to Din Ho?!!

Huh. I got a heap of takeout there last night to bring to a friend's house... wasn't really in there long enough to notice the change in decor, and since we had phoned in the order I wasn't looking at a new menu either. I didn't notice much of a difference in the food except that the BBQ pork was much, much better than it's been in a long time. We had almost given up on the dish but last night it was sweet and juicy and considerably less fatty than usual.

What does Austin do well?

Hi Iowchen,

I moved here from Guelph so I have a pretty good idea of what Austin has to offer compared to the GTA--I agree wholeheartedly with the Mexican and BBQ suggestions, and make sure you go for a Chicken Fried Steak (I'd suggest Tony's Southern Comfort on 6th st.).

I would skip Whole Foods since there's one in Toronto, and I really don't think there's any better Thai, Vietnamese, or Indian food than you'd get back home so focus on the Texas cuisine. Make sure you have a few margaritas while you're here!

cheers,
Coco

Hockey Playoffs?

Hmm... I may check out Bagpipes since it's much closer to where I live. The servers make me really uncomfortable, honestly, but at this point I'd do anything to catch the game.

thanks to you both.

Hockey Playoffs?

Hi folks,

Does anyone know where I might go to watch the hockey playoffs, enjoy a cold one, and maybe even find some good eats? I adore Texas but this time of the year's a bit rough for a displaced Canuck.

cheers!

Best Coffee in Montreal?

Santropol! Great coffee, great food, great vibe. I'm a Montrealer away from home and it's one of the first places I head to when I'm visiting.

Montreal restaurant recs for 50-person wedding?

I had a blast at a wedding reception held at Mythos, which is up on Parc. The place is Greek, so there are loads of veggie options. It was a fairly small gathering so there were other diners in the place, and by the end of the night they were sending us wine and coming to dance with us between the tables.

GOOD Homemade Tortillas

As far as grocery store tortillas go, I like the uncooked flour ones from Guerrero (look for the label "fresqui-ricas"). At my local HEB (Mopac and Parmer) they're stored with all the other tortillas. Margarita's organic also makes pretty good flour ones, and you can find those at the Whole Foods.

Some places known for their chicken wings

The Shady Grove makes pretty tasty wings. They're quite spicy and they're grilled rather than fried. No choice of sauces as I recall (if that's what you mean by 'preparation styles') but they're still the best thing on the menu.

curd cheese

Thanks for the Culver's tip, you guys. I stopped by for lunch and split an order of the fried cheese curds with a friend. They were salty and tasty--came with a huge side of ranch for dipping--and although they didn't get cold very well they definitely hit the spot.

curd cheese

Hmmm... has anyone spotted them at the Specs on Mopac?

Original Canadian Foods? Eh!

I see a lot of sugar shack foods listed here... has anyone mentioned 'les oreilles de crisse'? They're smoked pork jowls served fresh out of the deep fryer topped with maple syrup. My arteries ache just thinking about it, but my dad used to take us out for these in the spring.

curd cheese

Well, thanks for the leads. I'll certainly try the orange curds but it sounds like I'll have to buy a big sack of the right stuff next time I'm back home and hope the border guards don't take it away. Thankfully my supply of St. Hub sauce is still plentiful. :)

I appreciate the tips, all. Nice to see some other Canucks around here too.

curd cheese

Ooh, thanks Verily. I've had a few expeditions to Central Market but I never spotted them. I'd prefer white cheese but orange is better than none at all!

Shish Taouk

I love Boustan as well--but keep an eye on your sandwich since they have a tendency to let them burn on the grill when the place is busy. I don't know if it's still there, but I used to love the Fatoush on St. Laurent as well.

curd cheese

Okay, so I know this is a long shot but has anyone ever seen cheese curds for sale in the area? I'm looking for curds of white cheddar cheese that had a bit of squeak--if anyone's ever traveled to Quebec it's the cheese they make poutine with.

I have tried Oaxaca cheese as a substitute and it's not quite what I'm after.

Thanks!

Frugal meals

I was in the same boat for a very long time so I feel you!

A favorite cheapy meal: get some cheese ends (brie is great for this but any kind will do), a couple of bruised apples (I like green ones) and some day-old discounted panini, submarine buns, kaisers or whatever you can find. Makes a great panino in a George Foreman grill if you have one, otherwise just throw it in a frying pan and weigh it down with something while it toasts.

You won't notice the stale bread this way and if you can score a bunch of bread, just slice it up and freeze it. The sandwiches can be made with bread straight out of your freezer.

bacon grease vs pork fat?

Hi folks,

I have a recipe here that calls for me to toast some chiles in a little pork fat before using them. I only have bacon grease on hand. Can I use it? I realize it's probably much saltier but since I'm using such a small amount I figured I'd have a go at it.

Thanks.
