Planning a 50th Anniversary in the Richmond, VA area, any suggestions for venues?
I'm looking for a place for no more than 50 people to have cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvres, with room for dancing. I'm starting the search early (event is next year, probably in the summer) Willing to look into places from Ashland to Petersburg and in-between.
The Columbian center in Henrico county used to do a wonderful job, but it looks like they are no longer open for business. I'd prefer a place that offered package deals to cut out the hassle of selecting a venue and then outsourcing the caterer and other items.
I did a web search but mostly found advertising sites that offered no real insight into the locations. Would love to hear from anyone who's held an event in the area and were happy with their supplier. I'd also appreciate any warnings about companies to avoid.
Thanks

Suggestions in Chester, VA?
Must you stay in Chester-- can you go a few miles away? I grew up in Chester and know it is pretty much nothing but chains, and that's what the locals love. Don't even think about pizza, it does not exist!!
For BBQ pretty close by, why not try K & L Barbecue?

Its homestyle , southern cooking.
Good luck
Credit/Debit Cards
I wouldn't be so hasty to rule out the place. Many very small stores and restaurants operate on slim margins and can't afford the fees charged by the credit card companies. With any local, non-chain it is always advisable to call ahead to determine hours and method of payment accepted. I think it is a small price to pay for what can be delicious, fresh, hand prepared food.
Italiano in Durham Chapel Hill
Anyone tried menu items at Bocci? Recently had lunch with a large group and I ordered NY Style pizza. It was ok- not the real thing but not terrible. But the appetizers were clearly from frozen and ranged from uninspiring but not awful (calamari) to awful (scallops wrapped in prosciutto, a gag inducing off flavor and sausage stuffed mushrooms, blech). I was so happy I ordered pizza when the meals arrived. One salmon dish consisted of an over cooked salmon fillet surrounded by mounds of brown risotto! It looked awful. Another order of Italian wedding soup- contained ground beef instead of traditional meatballs, tortellini and enough spinach to choke a horse it was also made with a tomato broth, very strange. Maybe they should stick to pizza.
