Where's all the good food?

Talking about mash & fries, I visited a local italian place in Main Beach on the Gold Coast called Domain's and they've started serving all their main meals with roasted root vegetables instead; i.e turnip, yam, etc.
Different, but judging by the faces of the other patrons, it didn't go down quite well. In my opinion it was a brave move but could have been executed better.
The root vegies were quite bitter and did not go with my grilled baramundi!

Bangkok: Non-incendiary recommendations?

In my opinion its a leading misconception that thai food has to be spicy. There are so many dishes that don't involve cardiac arrest! For a vistor to bangkok and one who's looking for a basic introduction to thai cuisine, I feel you should start at the shopping centre food courts. The most consistent I've found was in a centre called MBK which is very central and easy to get to.
They have a large food court on the upper level of the centre which serves a vast array of local cuisine, many with subtle less spicy flavours.
I'm suggesting this because hawker stalls can be truly a wonderful experience but also can be quite daunting, when it comes to finding a good one. Let alone trying to place an order.
Once you've progressed from the food court then try your hand at the many hawker stalls, but be careful when it comes to hygene.
Some of the less spicy dishes; Yan Te Fau noodle soup, bbq pork on rice, guay jub, and many others.
Hope this helps.

Where's all the good food?

I never knew this was a truly universal expereince as suggested by kmh. I feel like I've lived a very naive life here on the Gold Coast of Australia. I guess most of my gastro opinions are based upon the media. Hearing this from jellyface makes me wonder if there are any "real" gastro publications out there that truly reflect food without sucking up to the upper echelons of the industry?
Is this the same in America? The food industry always sounds buzzing and exciting when referencing the United States, such as the likes of Danny Meyer and his Union Square cafe or Mr. Chow's in LA..do the locals have share the same opinion on their food scence as we do ours?

Where's all the good food?

Thank you for the tip kmh. I always look thowards these publications for inspiration and rarely am dissapointed by their suggestions.

Although pointing us foodies in the right direction, I still crave to dine at less established or upmarket restaurants. Many of those retaurants reviewed seem always to be the ones whom have won awards, voted most trendy & chic, etc, etc.

I,and I'm sure many others, yearn for the simpler meals, the more basic food holes which rarely get a mention except for word of mouth.

Overall, my biggest gripe really is the lack of good food here on the Gold Coast. My recent trips to Sydney & Melbourne seem to confirm this. Is it that we Gold Coasters are less adventurous than our friends in the south? Are we lacking the cosmopolitan-ness of the big city dwellers? Even Brisbane's food scene seems more exciting and inviting than on the Gold Coast.

Why is this so? Is it the environment of the Gold Coast that influences people expectations on food..good food?

Where's all the good food?

I am writing with a frustrated heart. Why can't I find many good places to eat on the gold coast? Everytime I try something new I end up being dissapointed with the outcome. So what happen? I end up going to the same old places...What are we Gold Coasters lacking that Sydney and Melbourne seem to have???
Please HELP!!!
