Miami Foodie Girl's Profile

Bengal Restaurant in Miami, anyone been?

Where is the restaurant located and what did you think of the prices vs. worth?

Miami Airport - Breakfast at 9:30 am... any suggestions

As a gringa could you tell me waht a Pupusas is, I have to drive my husband to the airport and am thinking perhaps I might have to stop on my way to my office

FN Executives are Idiots. (Spoilers)

we know that food network, has no clue. My question to them is what happened to the actually cooking shows where you could learn how to cook, taught by people who are passionate abouot food and not worried about how many millions they are going to make selling pots on QVC. I honestly prefer to watch cooking shows on PBS

Soul Food in South Florida

Are there any soul food restaurants in dade or broward and if so which ones are good?

Archie's Pizza In Key Biscayne, FL, Warning! Red Flag

Growing up my best friend lived on Key Biscayne and we would get Pizza there all the time. Even though I live in Miami, I had not thought of the place in 20 years. I am glad you reminded me, because next time I take my kids to the beach on key biscayne we can stop by for a pie!

Miami Herald Article Today, Ethnic Eats

We took my father, and met some friends up north and went to Saigon City (ironically next to silver pond chinese which seemed packed with a line). It was a great hole in the wall vietnamese, the food was fresh, flavorful and cheap. I recomend it. THey were closed but there appears to be a chinese bbq place and chinese bakery in the same strip mall and so we are interested in going back and checking those out.

Does anyone know if Silver Pond is worth it?

Miami Herald Article Today, Ethnic Eats

Thanks so much! I am excited, now all I have to do is figure out which one to go to first!

Miami Herald Article Today, Ethnic Eats

I was just wondering, if anyone had eaten at any of these places and are any of them worth it. My dad loves going to ethnic restaurants on Saturdays for lunch, so this expands our horizons.

I do have one problem he is allergic to shellfish, which is not a problem with Indian food but I know Indonesian and Filipino food uses lots of Shrimp paste, do you think that is going to be a problem or will there be things there he can eat.

Food Anthropology Studies Programs

You should also check out Indiana University, which is offering a interesting program that includes sustainable food classes in addtion to the history of food and non cooking culinary classes. Having gotten a degree in Hospitality and graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, if I did not have a full time job and a family, I would drop everything and sign up for one of those programs. It is certainly something I am going to consider when I retire!

Wall-E

As someone who used to weigh 335 pounds before having bariatric surgery and losing 170 pounds. It was very close to home, showing humans getting warmer, if it helps one person get healthy then it worked.

On a funnier note, the whole joke line about "growing a pizza plant" I thought was fantastic!

Gourmet's New Recipe Layout

It is funny that this was brought up. I was just looking through this months issue and I actually glanced at the cover to make sure I was not reading a travel magazine. I miss real cooking magazines, that actually talk about how to cook and then have recipes

Dining on US 41 South of Down Town Sarasota

my husband and I were in Sarasota last weekend for the first time. We had a wonderful meal at a Vietnamese restaurant, on Main street in downtown sarasota, I think it was called Pho Calli. It was really good, and inexpensive and we will certainly go back if we find ourselves in Sarasota. Unfortunately we were trapped at the Hyatt at a conference so Dinner was our only time to try restaurants and we ate at the vietnamese place twice

Looking for Kosher Caterers, Aventura - FL

Althought I dont highly recommend any of these. Ilana's will probably do the best for you, if you are working on a budget. My second choice would be Sara's Tent, but I believe you will have to pic up the food, I am not sure they do complete catering

Monday night dinner near Deering Estate

The empanadas are terrific and made throughout the day so they are hot and yummy. Everything on the menu is delicious and in English, so dont be intimidated just order what sounds good to you. Each entree comes with your choice of side dishes. I always get rice, plantains either sweet or savory and beans. Unlike cuban beans, these are white beans that are not oily and full of flavor. One of the other side dishes is a salad, but I would not order it unless you like undressed Iceberg.

Each table has Chimichurri sauce and a homemade hot sauce, try them they are both wonderful.

As far as dessert, we never have room, so I dont know if they are good or not!

Dining in Sarasota

My husband and I are in Sarasota for the weekend attending a conference. Last night, we followed a suggestion from a friend and went to a restaurant on Main Street called PHO CALI. It was authentic vietnamese and it was terrific! We brought our 2 year old son, who was happy to slurp noodles. The food was fresh and full of flavor and the menu was so extensive it was hard to decide.

The portions were good size and the three of us had our full for under 30 dollars.

Even though we saw a ton of restaurants to choose from, we are going to go back tonight because there is so much more to try!

Monday night dinner near Deering Estate

If you head south on Old Cutler road to 184 (eureka) and head towards US1, in the shopping center on the corner (there is a publix in it). There is a wonderful coloumbian restaurant.

Caps Place Lighthouse point

I was just watching a local program and saw mention of this restaurant, does anyone have anything to say about it?

Are there any similar dives I should know about?

Chocolate Cake

there is actually an AMISH bakery in Homestead. They are only open for part of the year and I am not quite sure what months they are here. A few months ago we made a trip out there on a Sunday to get some yummy things and it was closed (ON SUNDAY).

I am not sure I remember seeing chocolate cake, although it is very possible it is there. I know for a fact that they have the most amazing cinnamon rolls, breads and pies! They do have awesome chocolate brownies.

SOLU at the Singer Island Resort

We took a quick getaway to Singer Island. We were pleasantly surprised. The resort was simply lovely, right on the ocean, lovely pool, even better kids pool

The restaurant Solu, was a complete surprise. The service was outstanding, the presentation was terrific. My only complaint was that the appetizers were such large servings, we were full when our entrees arrived.

The food has an asian twist and is full of flavor.

The most exciting part were the dessert "flights". Smaller portions of the dessert menu, and you can choose how many you would like.

We have decided that the resort and the restaurant are worth going back for.

singer island or palm beach

I have a trade show to attend in Palm beach and they are putting us up in a hotel on singer island. I am not familar with the area, any Dining recs?

We have a toddler who is staying with Grandma, so it is the first time alone in a long time, so something with great food and a romantic ambience would be great.

Funky Chicken @ Edy's Chicken & Steak (Miami Beach)

Interesting, there was one that opened near my office in South Miami, in a spot that used to be Wasabi restaurant. Wasabi went out of business and for about a year the space was empty, the Edys Chicken and Steak openend and before I got a chance to try it, it was gone and once again the space is empty. Perhaps the North Miami location will fare better...

Burger King Steakhouse burger

I tried it today....was not sure I liked it. What did you think? It seemed a bit of a strange combination

Chain's in south miami

I grew up in south miami, when what is now the CVS, was Sunset Drugs where you went for great milk shakes and waitresses knew your name. Or Marshall Majors where Jake's is now.

I am completely unhappy with having two chain restaurants in south miami, especially such crappy ones! I would prefer a terrible meal at a Mom and Pop restaurant before I had a great meal at a chain. My vote is we keep supporting the mom and pop places and not the corporate chains!

Cafe Tu TU tango closing May 26?

I used to love to go to Tu Tu Tango, and it was a great date place. However, having grown up in the grove, Cocowalk....became just another mall, and the reason we dont go there any more is that parking is EXPENSIVE....and we can go to other malls with the same stores and movie theatres where the parking is free and there is Air Conditioning. Anyone have any guesses as to what will go into the space....I am going to bet a Chili's or a Friday's LOL

CIA Faculty Vote of "No Confidence" in President Tim Ryan

I am not surprised by this thread. I graduated just before the CIA really started to change (93). The school had yet to break ground on many new building and it was still simply a CULINARY SCHOOL. Suddenly it got huge, and tried to become more like a college, even going so far as to build a student union. I think it lost something in the process. Ferdinand Metz who was the president when I was there, worked hard on keeping the Europeon style of training chefs as an important part of the education process while trying to keep up to date as to what was new and exciting in the industry. I am proud to be a graduate, but I am am also embarresed as to what the school has become and what the industry says about the what the school has become.

5 Guys burgers in kendall

I drove down Kendall today and saw that the 5 Guys (I cannot remember the rest of the name) was finally open. I have seen posts on the board about the one in Tampa but I was wondering if anyone has tried this one and if so...was it any good?

Gyros

I was wondering if there was any place in the Miami area that had gyros that were any good.

Having come here from up north, where you can find them on most diner menus, I miss having a Gyro or Souvlaki.

Flour free desserts- Dade/Broward

HAving a husband who has celiac, I have been on a long search for flourless cakes. I agree that there are some good gluten free cake mixes out there. If you dont want to bake, Whole Foods, actually has a Gluten free baking facility and have a few cakes that you can find in the freezer section. They are not iced, but that is not hard to do. If you do find a flourless cake, please let me know because I woulod be eager to try

bar/bat mitzvah menu

I feel your disappointment. I just went through this, my daughters Bat Mitzvah was in January and I was extrememly frustrated. Since we had been to so many of these I really wanted something different. What I ended up doing was veering away from the idea of a classic "sit down" dinner for the adults and we ended up having an interesting menu that was actually fun.

Flagler Street, Downtown Miami: Northern Indian

What else is at the Flagler Streen Food Court, I am not even sure if I know where it is, but I would be willing to take a look if it is worth it
