Russo's vs. Whole Foods

I used to be a devoted Russo's shopper but after seeing the "Dirty Dozen" list of fruits and veggies that you should eat organic vs conventional I really had to quit. They had barely any organic produce and the international sources of much of the conventionally grown fruit got me a bit concerned about what I might be feeding my kids. I sure do miss the deli, the asian greens, the bakery, and the bargains!

Where can i find BISCOFF spread??

Yes, TJs in Arlington has it now as well....or you could do what my belgian inlaws do and put speculoos cookies (sometimes dunked in coffee or tea first) between two pieces of buttered bread and eat it like a sandwich...then you don't get all those extra ingrediants that they add to the spread. Yum

Savenors rib eye

Has anyone ever shelled out the $$ for WF's aged steaks? I've loved all the roasts I've gotten from Fresh Pond Market, but never bought steaks. I was curious if the aged beef at WF is worth trying?

Are Buff's Pub wings really all that ?

Buffs are about as good as it gets around here. I had pretty good BBQ wings the other day at Soul Fire (went at lunch and I got a HUGE mess of wings as an app - the full connected wing and drumette!) While chowhound is my favorite source for food recs, if you're into wings my friend's new website/iPhone app Kluckr.com is pretty neat as well...it is a user submitted wing joint review site.

EVOO and Za in Kendall Square

Has anyone been to EVOO for lunch yet? You know what you get with ZA (great 'za and salads...i think their crust is tasty and much better when it's overdone and crisp) but I'm curious what EVOO's lunches are like..both food quality and price point.

Black Chicken in Ma

This post reminds me I had an incredible Black Chicken Herbal Soup back in the mid-90's at East Ocean City - it was a VERY herbal soup, that included very funky bark/sticks and all sorts of other stuff that we didn't actually eat but got strained out of the pot at the table prior to serving. One part tea one part soup one part herbal medicine. It cooked for 24 to 48 hours as I recall. We also had shots of snake bile mixed with whiskey before the meal and ate the snake as an entre as well. The only other thing I recall was some form of conch and maybe geoduck? This was a very special meal a friend's father planned and coordinated with the owners, nothing from the menu, everything was excellent.

Friday night in Arlington or Belmont

I'd also add Scutra to your list of possible restaurants - it's fine dining but in a comfortable atmosphere - a good European (French/Belgian) restaurant. Not as trendy (I don't mean that negatively) as Il Casale, more upscale than Olvio, further away from Rt 2 than Flora, but a solid restaurant and good dining experience.

Arlington Diner - New Owners?

I recently heard that the Arlington Diner changed hands and is now owned by the same people who own the Greek Corner. That would be a huge improvement for a place that was pretty meh. Anyone have any information or feedback since the change?

If you were to propose

Why not propose on one of those bridges (she won't be expecting it there, esp if the temp is like 10 degrees) and then have dinner at any of the fabulous restaurants previously mentioned. If you propose beforehand, the 2 person room at Mamma Maria sounds like a great way to enjoy the engaged buzz/bliss without being the focus of everyone's attention for the rest of the night...unless of course that's part of the thrill for you? You two can really focus on each other during the dinner.

Best Chinese/pan-Asian Dumplings in Cambridge?

In addition to MC's suan la chow sho and Quingdao, I'll also give props to Wangs in Somerville (I know you said Cambridge, but Magoon Square isn't that far).

Lambextravaganza!

So we finally had the Lambextravaganza @ Brookline Family Restaurant this past Sat night. We had a ball - mostly due to great DCs and the quirkiness of the restaurant. Service, as promised, was spotty (had to prompt for menus and drinks...server didn't think one of the DC was serious when he ordered Baklava to start...turkish coffees never arrived), but the food was very solid for a no frills restaurant. It was nothing to swoon over - perhaps the stuffed eggplant or turkish pizza topped the offerings - but it was fun. For a Sat night there were a total of 3 parties eating at 8 pm, so perhaps this restaurant hits its peak at a different time or day? Lamb chops, lamb kabobs, turkish pizzas with lamb and with sausage, sultan's delight (lamb over eggplant), and numerous hot and cold apps were devoured happily with no complaints.

Still...it left me still yearning for the original Lambextravaganza I had about 6-8 years ago at the Indian/Pakistani place in the Super 88 Food Court - where we had endless plates full of perfectly cooked lamb chops....we gave him the heads up a day or two beforehand and he set us up! The sikh chef who cooked there has since left and cooks at Kabob Factory these days, i think. He is a master with the Tandor.

Thanks again to all for their recommendations.

Lambextravaganza!

We've settled on Brookline Family Restaurant. T-Accessible; price accessible (shade cheaper than Helmand); never been there (a big plus); can grab a pint at Matt Murphy's afterwards; numerous lamb options. Thanks to all for their great suggestions; will try some of them soon.

Lambextravaganza!

Thanks all...many good ones...keep them coming if anyone has any other great ideas. I agree with Sultans...miss working down there...Zoe's Lamb with Cumin is awesome...we had the original Lambextravaganza years ago at the Indian place in the Super 88 Market in Allston years ago when they had a different cook there - 8-10 friends and piles and piles of lamb rib chops. I've heard he's at Kabob Factory now...not as economical as the food court.

Since it hasn't been mentioned, the Aegean's Lamb Rib Appetizer is the best deal on their menu...it's an appetizer but you get a large pile of delicious lamb (not the perfect lamb rib chops but another cut with more fat but oh so delicious).

All these great ideas make it really hard to pick just one...if the economy wasn't in reverse we'd have to have a Lamb Crawl.

Authentic deli corned beef

I've just recently discovered a great Pastrami at Russo's and think it's delicious. Might be from Pearl (like the hot dog). Nice spice/cumin/corriander crust. Very rustic to go with the homemade bread. I haven't tried the corned beef yet but can vouch for the pastrami.

Lambextravaganza!

With Spring upon us and Easter around the corner my thoughts have turned to Lamb dishes of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities. I'd love to hear your recommendations for restaurants serving delicious lamb dishes - anything from simple succulent kabobs to tender lamb chops to smothered shanks, from tandori to stews to sausages. To keep you all focused, my preference is for a place I can take a crew of 6-8 people, T-accessible a plus but not a requirement, nothing too expensive (entrees < $20) , just good lamb dishes - greek, indian, persian, north african, whatever. Thanks in advance!

bella moto bakery arlington

Actually Quebrada does still have the almond paste croissant - I passed on it last weekend - it's called the "Classic Almond" as opposed to the "Almond & Cinnamon" that they also serve. The apricot was still there a month ago when I brought in pastries for my office. Personally, I find the chocolate to-die for...dare I say almost too much *gasp* chocolate in them.

Fun Lunch 3 Adults and 3 kids aged 2-4

Our kids really enjoy eating at Punjab in downtown Arlington. The food is great but another highlight is that the tandoor oven area is visible from the dining room through a large plexiglass window; our sons really enjoy watching the cooks prepare the breads and kabobs and the cooks are pretty friendly when kids press their noses to the glass.

Garden at the Cellar

Thinking of going to Garden at the Cellar soon - perhaps this upcoming Saturday night. They don't take reservations...since we'll have a babysitter it can be an issue if the wait is long...anyone know if there are long waits on weekends to get a table here? Being Head of the Charles weekend, I may have just answered my own question, but...anyone with experience here? Thanks in advance.

Business Dinner Rec?

slight miscommunication...turns out we were "invited" not "inviting" and the other party made a reservation at Umbria. Nothing special. Thanks for all the good recs...maybe next time.

Business Dinner Rec?

Looking for a recommendation for an upscale business dinner in Boston; expense is no object; quality of food should be top notch; atmosphere shouldn't be too stuffy; food needs to a bit more diverse than steakhouses typically offer...something along the lines of a No 9 Park, but with a little more relaxed/hip atmosphere.
