What is your favorite Izakaya in LA and why?
Hey Everyone,
I was just wondering what your favorite Izakaya is. I loved the plethora of izakaya litered around Tokyo where you could just go sit in a quiet secluded booth with 3 or 4 close friends and just enjoy same cold beer decent food for hours. I personally am more forgiving on the quality of izakaya food if it is reasonably priced (or accompanied by reasonably priced beer) and has that authentic feel. For example, I have a good time at Honda Ya in Little Tokyo but don't dig Fur Rai Bo (yes I know the chicken wings are good) because it is just always soo crowded and slightly too pricey from what I remember. Which izakayas are your favorites and why?
Chicken hearts near Los Feliz?
Hey anyone have any suggestions for butchers or markets where I can get raw chicken hearts on the eastside.
AYCE KBBQ for a larger sized group (8-15 people)
Thanks everyone for your input. I made reservations for Road to Seoul since I have already spent a good amount of time at Tahoe. I look forward to the overeating.

AYCE KBBQ for a larger sized group (8-15 people)
Never been there before. It's pretty good?
AYCE KBBQ for a larger sized group (8-15 people)
I was just wondering if people had some suggestions for decent all you can eat Korean barbecue places that can accommodate a larger sized groups (only caveat is I am pretty sick of Manna). A lot of my favorites are smaller type places that I don't think could comfortably fit a lot of people in a single group. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.
Best beer kegs near Los Feliz?
Thanks. I just gave them a call. The prices are pretty comparable and its great they deliver.
Who delivers chicken soup in Los Feliz?
Home's food is sad. The soup was overly salty and does not taste like fresh chicken was involved in any part of the preparation.
Best beer kegs near Los Feliz?
I know this is more drink related and less eat related but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on where to get the best beer kegs (good beer that is inexpensive) near Los Feliz. Is it just worth driving to west hollywood for BevMo?
Need to pick up small thanksgiving dinner for three in westwood area, any suggestions?
So I am bringing over thanksgiving dinner to my grandparents who are in the westwood area and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for places. Price is not a big concern but they are not the most adventurous eaters so nothing to out there. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it.
Moxie on 7th?
I have been there a few times. The atmosphere is good, the people are nice, the food is neither. Most often the first question I ask the staff at Moxie's is "what on the menu do you not have today?" I have to ask this because many times after spending a few moments deciding what to get, the staff have to inform me that they are out of one of the crucial ingredients for exactly what I wanted.
The place presents itself as the kind of spot that would take an interest in artisanal food or at least fresh made food however again neither would really be a true description. The side dishes are not bad but I am pretty sure they are made off site in the morning. Most of the sides are also bland. One side I do like is the beet salad (it is hard to mess up beats). The rest of the menu is made up of sandwiches. The bread for the sandwiches are nothing special, again not the freshest tasting. The meats and cheeses are not bad but again not something that really leaves you wanting to come back.
One final problem with Moxie is that there just is no value for the price of the food. There is a taco truck right up the street on 7th that will probably give you better food for the price. There is no ambiance at the truck but if you really want you can take your tacos back to Moxie and buy a yoohoo to chase down your carne asada.
Loreto's Fried Turkey - Cheap, Friendly, and Tasty Mom and Pop
I took the drive to Watts/Compton for lunch at Loreto's Fried Turkey. You pull up the place and to be honest it looks like a dump. It is in a mini-mall (usually a good sign for me but can scare the less enlightened off of a restaurant) next to a liquor store (another bonus). The sign is big and no frills. However, despite the exterior the inside is another story. It is small but more cozy than cramped. Definitely not room for a big group, but enough for the two people I with whom I went and myself. There is kitch, there is brik a brak, but its not your TGIFriday's garbage.
More importantly, the food was good. If you have to ask what to order at "Loreto's Fried Turkey" you probably should not be leaving your house without adult supervision. This said, the menu is semi strange. Most of the items relate or include fried turkey in some form. I chose the turkey sub and a turkey Taco with "Soul". The sub was good. The turkey meat was great. It was moist and flavorful. There was a lot of bread but it was not dry or overpowering since it was packed full of meat. There might be too much mayo for some but it was fine for me.
The taco was something new altogether. I am a taco purist but this was fusion at its best. Adding "soul" apparently means filled with gravy. Utterly legit. The taco was $1.50 or $1.00 without "soul". The sub was $6. The kicker is there is no tax. My friends got the Turkey Taco plate (two tacos, rice and beans) and a Turkey plate (turkey, greens, corn bread, and I think rice or potatoes) everyone ate for less than $10 and everyone enjoyed it.
The service was great. The staff is comprised of the owner, his mom, and his dad. Literally, mom and pop. The owner even brought out wipes for us before and after. The owners also told us they do whole fried turkeys to order, as long as you give them a day or so notice. Its worth the trip, check it out.

Is there any place that makes fresh mankoushe? And if so any recommendations?
Mid wilshire restuarant for 8 cheap/fun
Hey everyone,
I need to find a place centrally located around fairfax/midwilshire even as far as hollywood that is not too adventurous, fits a table of 8, and is about 10-15 a person. We just want comfortable and pretty good. Any ideas are appreciated.
Sherman Oaks: is there any place worth crossing the hills for?
I was born and raised in West L.A. I have spent a lot of time exploring far south and far east in LA but I have avoided the valley like rotten fruit. It seems semi ridiculous that I have been so close though and yet I am still so ignorant. So I am putting out a call for restaurants, dives, and stands for which it is worth traversing up the 405. I of course and not talking about chain restaurants of any kind. Show me the errors of my ways.
El Tarasco on Sunset
I ate there last week. It is resoundingly mediocre for being in a city that has an incredible amount of not just good but great authentic taquerias. It there is nothing wrong with the food but its just not great and is uncomfortably westernized. Thankfully there was no lettuce on the tacos but I would not have been surprised.
Nice but without pretension birthday dinner
Hey everyone,
I am going out for a birthday dinner and I am looking for a place that is nice and has awesome food but is comfortable. Last year, we went to Blair's and that was great but I want to try someplace new. I am in Los Feliz but others at the dinner are coming from westside, so someplace in the middle would be optimal. I was thinking about Animal because I heard a lot of good things but I am not a big pork eater so I am still on the fence. I was wondering if people had suggestions or comments. Price is not really a concern, but again nothing uptight, pretentious, or "hollywood."
Lamb Birthday Dinner Suggestions
Hey Everyone,
So my dad wants to go out for his birthday but the only reference he gave us is that he wants some good lamb. I would like to go someplace nice but really the food is more important than anything. Beyond lamb he did not care where it was or what nationality. I was thinking maybe Armenian but I am looking for suggestions.
Who delivers chicken soup in Los Feliz?
Thanks for the offer tthat is really nice but I am in no condition to leave my house. I am going to bite the bullet and order from Home.
Who delivers chicken soup in Los Feliz?
So I am sick and I do not have any energy to cook up some soup myself. Does anyone know of any place in Los Feliz that will deliver chicken soup. I would prefer matzoh ball soup but I know that might be pushing it. Anyplace that delivers chicken noodle would be fine.
Mexican Birthday dinner - Last minute!
The original La Parilla on First street east of downtown is great for kooky, and has a varied Mexican menu. Roving mariachis can get irritating after a while.
Anywhere to watch the debate tonight (eastside)?
The Obama people are showing the debate on big projectors in Social in Hollywood I believe.
Do Chowhounders eat on Ocean Ave in Santa Monica?
ICugini is pretty decent for italian food on Ocean Ave. It's also not a total rip off like most the restaurants on that stretch of the street. Oh, and Makai is overpriced and confused fusion garbage. You can't eat ambiance.
Good tea on the east side?
There are a ton of coffee houses and cafes but anyone know a place you can get some really good tea for not too much around los feliz/silverlake?
Anyone been to Ali Mama on Sunset?
Drive by this place a lot and always see it open around 3a.m. but never been inside. Is it a hookah bar? Do they have food there? Is it decent?
real mexican in santa monica
El Super Taco on Santa Monica Blvd just west of Barrington has some quality tacos. Its not a fancy place but the food is cheap and simple if your looking for a classic taco.
Fresh seeds and spices
Hey I was wondering if anyone had any good places that sell a good selection of fresh seeds and spices around the east side.
