non chain, orlando fast food

Just gotta go to Black Bean Deli when it's not lunch time. I've never been during the lunch rush but I'm sure it's crazy. I've only been in the evening, after 4, and it's never been all that bad.

On the subject of fast Cuban sandwiches, you can't forget Black Bean Deli on Orlando Ave in Winter Park. I prefer their Cubans to those at Cuban Sandwiches to go. But my favorite sandwich there is the Choripan. MMM yum.

I also like the sandwiches at Philly Style Hoagies on Magnolia in downtown Orlando. It's been awhile but I've always loved sliced meats, cheeses and fresh mozzerella. The cheesesteak was also surprisingly tasty.

Aunt Lena's Creamery (Chandler, AZ)

I went by there just a couple days ago and the location seems to be closed. All the fixtures seem to be removed and I didn't see any mention of this on the website. Any body know what's up?

Jockamo's in Orlando Still Open?

I'd like that Jackamo's was also one of my favorites, but I must say that in its last days it did seem to slide a bit. I almost think it went under new management or staff or something. There seemed to be a point when the prices went much higher and they only offered gumbo or jambalaya as specials of the day. Over the past year I'd go in and see totally different people working, and not same (owners?) that I was used 2 and 3 years ago. I can't put my finger on it, but it just wasn't the same.

They did have a crawfish boil not too long ago, and it seemed to be quite hopping then, so I'm not sure what happened. They also had moved to that location 4 years ago quite suddenly, so perhaps they just moved.

Oh well.

Jeremiah's Italian Ice - Orlando/Maitland

It's been probably a year since I last ate at the Jamaican place but remember it being very tasty. Also, Millie herself was often there to suggest dishes and practically entertain us with her jokes and not to mention her accent. Unfortunately I haven't seen too many patrons inside lately so I'm not sure how the food is or how much longer it may be open. I guess I'll have to go sometime and up the recommendations.

Jeremiah's Italian Ice - Orlando/Maitland

The Jeremiah's is in the Knight's Corner shopping area and is right next to Lazy Moon Pizza. It has been open for about a year and a half now.

edit: oops, should have read the rest of the post before restating information.

Jeremiah's Italian Ice - Orlando/Maitland

I've been going to Jeremiah's for several years now and love it. I believe the location on Aloma is the original and on weekends and late nights you can see cars lined up for "drive through" service and the employees hopping from one car to the next taking orders and delivering the ice. I love the "strawberry lemon" flavor, the one that already combines the two together, and then combined with the soft serve to make a "gelati" is just delicious. It was great that they opened a location close to the university. I always see tons of students lined up for the tasty treat. I guess Jeremiah's has now been placed as my go to frosty dessert now that Il Gelatone has closed.

Gelato in Orlando-Il Gelatone closed :(

I'm going to have to try this place out. Ambiance never really bothered me. Too far for a leisurely stroll (and perhaps a little sketchy) but still really close to my house. Thanks for the suggestion.

Ravenous Pig / Orlando

Sounds like a place I'll have to try some time. I think I hear a friend talking about it. Is it also known as a "Gastro Pub"? Also fun to hear that they have churros for dessert, because that's basically what it sounds like the pig tails are. And no not the long churros you get at the fair, but the authentic stuff you get from the cafes in Barcelona, Spain and such. I'm sure they are delicious.

Gelato in Orlando-Il Gelatone closed :(

Where's the best new place to get gelato in Orlando. And before any of you suggest, Il Gelatone in Thornton park is closed, gone, no more. It saddened me greatly to find out the news. According to their website they closed on Dec. 23 and will focus on wholesale and internet sales.
http://www.ilgelatone-usa.com/Closing...
So I guess they aren't completely out of business but they no longer have a store front.

Anyway as I live in Thornton Park, it was always nice to just walk down the street for a sweet treat but alas that is no more. Last night I was craving some ice cream and had no idea where to go for something simple (Cold Stone and it's varieties has always been way too much of a process and I'm not a fan). I'm not asking for suggestions in just the downtown area (though some would be nice) but anything in the entire Orlando area. I'm so sad that my favorite ice cream shops have now closed.

Thanks for any suggestions

Orlando Weekly Restaurant Week

This upcoming week till May 10 starting tonight is restaurant week. It looks like several good restaurants are lined up all offering a pre-fix three course meal for 25 dollars. Some are offering for less. Here's a link to the web site listing the participating restaurants including posted menus.
http://www.orlandoweekly.com/restaura...

Looks like a great opportunity to try those places you always wanted to and I'm interested if there are any restaurants that I should definitely take advantage of. Not just because of good food but also because there is some value to be had.

UCF Burger places

Unfortunately I myself lament that there are not really any good burgers around UCF. I wish a Five Guys would move in nearby. I think they could do really well. I once had a pretty decent burger up at Froggers on Alafaya, just south of Mitchell Hammock.

La Bodegon?

I've been noticing this place a lot lately driving up 17-92 through Winter Park and it caught my eye. Spanish food and tapas. It always looked kind of closed but I never really noticed it several months ago. Well apparently is new because it now has a "Now Open" sign. Haven't really heard much about it, but some friends went last night for Valentine's Day. The preliminary report was excellent. Great food and the service was spot on. Anybody know anything about this place? I'm always looking out for a Spanish restaurant.

Best ribs in Orlando

Well I wasn't really hung up on baby back, I was just asking mainly asking and as you can see it was over a year ago. I agree they don't hold up as well and I find that it's a lot easier to mess up. But when they are spot on, I just can't resist.

Thai and Chinese Recs for Orlando and Tampa?

What happened to Winnies that it is now just OK? I thought it was very good, as it is in you book. Has it gone down hill? That's too bad cause I always wanted to get out there but just haven't yet.

By the way I was looking through your book lately and a few tears were almost shed. As you say, the restaurant biz is volatile, and though the book is only 1-2 years old several restaurants in there have already bit the dust. Perhaps I could start a thread that is a bit of a rehash of the book and lists all the now gone restaurants/ or those that no longer meet approval and possible substitutions. I know that Annelle and Hugo (?) is gone and that Alfonso's Pizza in College Park is no longer the same. Examples like that. It's all unfortunate because I never got out to either of those.

Fast Casual in Orlando

I would highly suggest Earl of Sandwich at the Disney Marketplace area of Downtown Disney. Wonderful sandwichs and all for just 5 bucks each. It's counter service but I've enjoyed all my meals there. They also have salads which are tossed right in front of you though I've never had one.

Visiting Chicago Labor Day weekend, want to hit the musts

I'm in town over this Labor Day weekend and want to hit the best and must eats of the Chicago area. I'm talking pizza, hotdogs, italian beef and anything else I may have missed. Anything that screams Chicago and is unique to the area, sandwichs desserts, anything goes. Feel free to include some nicer places that have great dining experiences not to be missed.

Trip from Athens to Orlando through Macon. Quick, Sunday eats

Making a trip from Athens through Macon and south Georgia and on to Orlando. Just looking for a good place to stop for lunch. More than likely, from a late start, the probably time for lunch would be in Macon. Unfortunately this little road trip will be made on a Sunday so I'm pretty sure that knocks some great places I've seen on the boards like H&H and Nu-Way. I would have loved to stop at those places but I'm pretty sure they are closed on Sundays. So any suggestions for a rather thrifty lunch, something simple in Macon or surrounding area would be great, but they would have to be open on Sundays.

I've already spent some time in Athens so I'm looking for lunch elsewhere. Just for additional info heading from Athens to Macon by way of the 129 and then the I75 straight shot to Orlando. If there are any places just south of Macon, they would also probably work.

Best first date restaurant in Orlando

I went ahead and went to Dexter's at Thornton Park. It's relatively close to my place and I've been meaning to try it for some time. Also has a good downtown location, plus the prices seemed just right.

Overall the experience was great and the food extremely thrilled my date. We started with an appetizer off of the changing menu. It was a chorizo manchego cheese risotto. It was very good but unfortunately all throughout the day I had been suffering from a bit of a stomach thing, though I hid it well. Overall it was a hit.

For main entrees I went with the Mediterranean pasta toss, and she with the parmesan shells. At first I thought my pasta would have too many flavors and too much going on, but in the end the main flavor was a subtle olive oil and allowed myself to mix in a bite of chicken, spinach, or cheese with each forkload. It was great. The parmesan shells were extremely simple. Nothing really exciting in my eyes, but she loved it so that's all that matters.

No dessert or wine for us. I'm currently on some medication that prohibits alcohol, and I'd much rather go around the corner for gelato at Il Gelatone if I fancy dessert.

Service was efficient. Nothing to stand out, but kept the drinks full, food arrived in timely manner and he mostly kept out of the way which was just fine. It allowed us to talk and not be interrupted. The main regret I had is not eating outside. Dexter's has a nice little patio. I was worried about heat but it turned out to be a nice evening. Plus, it was a lot quieter outside. My main complaint was with the noise on the inside. It wasn't too much that I couldn't converse, but for the fact that the room wasn't full, it was a lot louder than I would have thought.

Overall great first date restaurant. Nice range of dishes, including a changing menu that is particular to the location. Great wine selection. And with its close proximity to Lake Eola, it provides an excellent opportunity to take an after dinner stroll to talk and allow food to settle.

Thanks again Bob for the suggestions and I fully plan on making use of the list for any future dinner dates.

quick bite to eat before concert at Ford Amphitheater

I'll be attending a concert at the Ford Amphitheater at the state fair grounds and was wondering if there was any good chow nearby. I think I've heard mention that Ybor is nearby and may be my best bet. I'm basically looking for something that will be rather quick for a party of 4. Or even counter service would be just fine. We won't have too much time, about 40min or a little more.

Best first date restaurant in Orlando

I'm looking for a good first date restaurant. Since it would be just a first date I'm not looking for anything too expensive or too romantic, just a place that can impress with food. Plate prices in the $10-20 range, with a possible few exceptions above 20. Service should be good and it would be nice if the restaurant noise is not too loud as I'd like to be able to talk to my date, though fun choices for subsequent dates are also welcome.

I'm looking for both ethnic and standard American food choices as the date may not always be the "most adventurous" when it comes to food. But since I'm a fan of all varieties, I'm looking for all possible listings. The location is not important as long as it is in the Orlando vicinity. I'm hoping for an exhaustive list if possible. I know of a few places but I haven't been to them yet and therefore don't know if they are very "first date" conducive.
