King's Hawaiian Restaurant
King's is good, if a bit overpriced. Here's where me and my hubby from Oahu go monthly:
Bob's Hawaiian Style/ Okazu Ya - 16814 S Vermont Ave, Gardena, CA 90247, (310) 515-2250
A little ghetto, but the best plate in town. We had our wedding reception there. TOTALLY worth the drive, over Kings!
Aloha Cafe - 410 E 2nd St, Los Angeles, CA 90012, (213) 346-9930
Very convenient to downtown LA, very good food; they catered our hula ho'ike (show)
Shakas - 2300 S Garfield Ave, Monterey Park, CA 91754, (323) 888-2695 for cafe style or
101 W Main St, Alhambra, CA 91801, (626) 293-5520 for the restaurant
Both serve lunch/dinner, I love their very FRESH ingredients and the laid back atmosphere of the Monterey Park location
L&L here is not like the ones in Hawai'i sadly. Now if someone opens a ZIPPY'S here, I'll be there in a heartbeat :) aloha

Best Breakfast Burritos
hands down... I've been coming here for YEARS and it is totally out of my way.. mmmmmmmmmmm. So good, the line goes out the door on Saturdays. It's all in those damn potatoes. Hell with my diet, I'm going there today!

Review + Pics: Fix Coffee in Echo Park
Did you go finally?? :) planning to go soon for a followup review.
Best Pizza in Los Angeles (& surrounding)????!!
Mm. Not a Pizza Buona fan, although many of my friends are.. crust has always tasted way to dry for me, the toppings bland. Lamonicas is wonderful! Hard Times in Silver Lake yummy. But I will say nothing beats a garlic knot or pepperoni slice from any dive in Brooklyn NY LOL :)
Review + Pics: Fix Coffee in Echo Park
Awesome, Suebee, you beat me to it! :) I'll tag on my review.
You might find this place if you get lost and drive too far north on Echo Park Ave. Yet, suddenly, at the NE corner of Baxter and Echo Pk Avenues, there it is. Pull over!
For those of us who live in the area, the place is a godsend. FIX doesn't yet have a sign, but you will always see someone there, getting their soy chai latte, pear brie sandwhich, or molten lava chocolate cake. Perfect for a late afternoon tete-a-tete or brunch. Beautiful architecture and romantic tree shaded outdoor patio, with brushed hardwood benches, quiet neon framed windows, and gelato. Water dishes for dogs and plenty of space for strollers or bikes. Slightly upscale in price, but worth it, with premium coffees and a great array of rare teas in single serving presspots.
The crowd is yuppie, artsy, family and nouveau Echo Park. There is even a little parking lot, but also lots of street parking, so they don't have the parking problem that South Echo Park Avenue establishments do. Nothing beats Delilah's coffee cake, but you've got to try FIX's chocolate cherry or spinach and feta croissants... mmmmm.
Nice people to serve you. Go. Not too crowded. Yet. Hours are generally 8 AM - 6 PM M-Sun, they are still getting settled though, so stay tuned.
Post whale-watching meal in/near San Pedro and the Los Angeles Harbor
Second on Kafe Neo! Fresh, deliciously prepared Greek food... try their jam and cheese omelette or chicken dishes. Amazing coffee and chai!
Best Thai food in LA?
Why has no one mentioned Sompun on this thread? I spent a year with a Thai chef and UCLA prof eating at thai restaurants around Los Angeles.. and we always return to Sompun in Silver Lake.. the best Thai homecooking anywhere hands down. (323) 669-9906. 4156 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90029
breakfast burrito?
I dont know what they put in those damn things at CC, but I cannot get un-addicted.
Breakfast Burritos!
I like when chefs can blend food in like that for a burrito.. sounds like a plan when I go out to the Valley.. I seem to get stuck at Las Fuentes tho on my way to anything out there (Actor Eddie Olmos' and my fave place to eat).. near Vanowen and Reseda, on Vanowen..
Breakfast Burritos!
I believe,.. tho am not sure how valid this is.. that the huge korean chef dude usually chopping up the meat and potatoes to make your burrito was trained in sushi prep... when you watch him work, the blade going bullettrain fast... you might believe it...everything is sliced extremely thin, cooks together well. and tastes like heaven.. do they have 12 step for this?
Breakfast Burritos!
having grown up in Echo Park among some amazing home chefs... a mexican style burrito would be more fresh salsa filled, hotter in general, and contain chorizo or carne asada or carnitas.. as choices. Very tasty, but whatever they put in Corner Cottage's burrito just keeps me coming back for more..
Breakfast Burritos!
Thank you SOOO much for the links to previous posts (which I thought I searched for, but must have missed) and for the newer recs! Terrific post for those of us who work out like gangbusters just so we can have our morning sin once in a while... ALL HAIL.. THE BREAKFAST BURRITO!
ISO of decent Udon in little tokyo or area
Suehiros makes a nice homestyle chicken udon, that my son loves. They have several different udons, including a clean tasting veggie one.
Breakfast Burritos!
My favorite one is at CORNER COTTAGE 310 S Victory Blvd, Burbank, CA 91502
(818) 843-2567.. wonderfully overcooked potatos, soft and mushy inside sushi style sliced bacon, or sausage, with cheese onions, the works. They use oversized tortillas, and they serve my sentimental fave, Orange Bang. So it's a Korean style burrito... it rocks.
I'd LOVE to hear about other joints around town, since I travel around LA all week.
Thanks!
Jeni
Best Mexican INSIDE The City
We are team of elite Latin American runners out of Los Angeles, headed for the San Francisco Marathon end of this month. Please name your absolute favorite Mexican restuarant.
We're leaning towards fresh, tasty, authentic (eg they should offer things like sopes, enchiladas, even menudo on the weekends... birria can't hurt). It should be within City limits. TY!
