Best Upscale Burger

2 recs on the East side: The York in Highland Park (a gastropub, but really fun and GREAT burger) and reservoir in Silver Lake-- very nice, upscalish neighborhood bistro that serves a great burger as well, and mixes sweet potato and regular fries as a side.

Reservoir in Silverlake?

You should absolutely write to the owners!

STREET finally opens Monday

I did last week- it's very good, and very MEAT-Y. I think everything we ordered had bacon in it or on it... but yummy! My plus one and I shared 3 appetizers- fried hominy, pork belly on lentils with white beans, and the baby broccoli with fried egg on top. All were totally tasty and filling enough that we didn't order an entree, though we had originally planned on ordering the pork ribs- saw them at another table and they looked fantastic. Then we shared two desserts- the lemon curd and the bacon chocolate crunch bar-- both terrific. Nice wine list and 3 glasses is the same price as a bottle, which I thought was cool.

The food is not light, by any means. The table next to us ordered the fried fois gras- yikes! Looked great, but I am thinking the fois gras itself, while being put in the fryer, probably said, "Seriously?" Definitely not an every-week kind of place, based on the richness factor, but a good meal.

STREET finally opens Monday

Does anyone know if there's a beer and wine license or full liquor license at Street? The website doesn't say...

Thanks!

Well said, patty-- all the complaining about price point (not just this restaurant, but many others) when folks haven't been to a restaurant gets tiring. Go there first, then decide if you're getting what you paid for. Or don't go if the prices look too steep. Right!

where to buy good olives?

Hilarious, and accurate-- which is why I mentioned that they do ship their product... But it is pretty cool to get the olives right there from the source.

Late-night dining near South Pasadena/Pasadena area

I think you mean Shiro? It is only open til 9 weekdays, 10 Fridays and Saturdays. Is it good? I've always wanted to try it (sorry to sidetrack!). I agree about York, except that you can't smoke inside or anything. and the food is so good!!

The French place by the train is Bistro de la Gare (get it? Train station...)- only open til 10p weekdays and 10:30p weekends, 9p on Sundays.

Eagle Rock lunch places?

All great suggestions!

Also, the Glendale Zankou is really quite close to E.R.-- just head West on Colorado and you're there in 5 minutes.

What about The York in Highland Park? It's more of a 'gastropub', but the food is very good, it's casual, and certainly open past 9:30p. From S.Pas, it's just a hop East on York Bl. between Aves 50 and 51.

Frozen Yogurt Hunt

Roseberry Yogurt in Glendale-- Pinkberry in style, but MUCH better- Pinkberry always tastes powdery to me-- Roseberry is much smoother.

where to buy good olives?

If you don't mind going a bit out of L.A.- to Ontario (about 45 minutes east)- go to Graber Olives. Just incredible. It's worth visiting, but they do ship their product.

spagetti and meatballs in la

I have always been partial to Palermo's in Los Feliz-- it has a great family atmosphere, good, inexpensive wines and great, inexpensive, basic Italian food.

GOOD BRUNCH PLACE in LOS FELIZ?

Netty's (in Silverlake) is now doing Sunday Brunch by the soon-to-be new Chef/Owner. Highly recommend.

Al Gelato Disappointment

If you're on the East Side or in the Valley, you gotta try this place for AMAZING and fresh Gelato:

Pinocchio/Monte Carlo Market
3103 W. Magnolia Blvd.
Burbank
(818) 845-3517

It's kind of a weird Italian Cafeteria/Market, and the food is good and cheap, but the Gelato is inCREDible.
